You've gotten some good suggestions, but I'd add tofu to the mix. You can put the silken kind in smoothies if she's on all-liquid, to add some protein. If she can mush stuff with her mouth but just not chew, the firmer tofu will work fine, just chop it into cubes for her. You don't need to cook it, and it will be softer if you don't. You can marinate it to add some flavor. GL!

Sorry, no real recipes here... just some ideas.

When our family members have been on "no-chew" diets, here are some of the things we've been able to eat:

All kinds of shakes (mix up flavors, add different fruit, etc - chocolate/banana, vanilla w/blueberries, strawberry w/oranges added). Use shake mixes, or make smoothies using yogurt, juice, fruit, etc.

Soups - most of the cream soups don't have to be chewed, tomato, broth mixes. Ad some crackers, and wait until they get really soggy, so they add substance, but no chewing.

Pudding
Jello
Oatmeal
Cream of Wheat
Yogurt
Ice Cream
apple sauce
peanut butter on a spoon

Try to find as many "Real" foods as possible - that's what your child may start craving - something that requires a fork or spoon, but can be eaten with out chewing (you can mash things with your tongue on the roof of your mouth) -

Scrambled eggs
mashed potatoes
overcooked sweet potatoes or acorn squash
mashed cauliflower
Spagettios (maybe?)
Stove Top stuffing

Tip: Take SMALL bites

Also check the babyfood isle. Some of them have made it a long way since the old days. You might find something that your child will like.

Finally, if this is going to be for any length of time, make sure your child is taking some vitamins, pediolyte, protien powders in the shakes, etc.

Good luck!

D.,
Shaklee has an excellent meal replacement shake expecially formulated for children, called Meal Shake. It comes in chocolate and vanilla. You can find it at http://www.shaklee.net/healthforlife.
You might also try baby food to get the fruits and veggies, or puree them yourself.

When I had jaw surgery back in the mid 80's, I was counting on loosing some weight. However, I started making shakes with Blue Bell Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, and I came up with twice baked Potato soup, with cheese sour cream ect. I gained weight.

I would suggest listening to the other mothers with smoothies, and diet shakes.

I would also suggest you purchase a water pick, if your family does not already own one.

I have been here! In 2006 I had major jaw surgery and my jaw was wired shut for 4 months. For me there was a surgical guide wired to my braces before they wired my jaw shut there were very few gaps to get anything between because of it. If it had any texture it would not go through.

Mashed potatoes with butter and sour cream are great but add a lot of milk or she will be sucking forever.

Warm Jello. It is actually one of her best sources of protein and she will need that to heal. I know you can get protein powders but I couldn't get them through my teeth.

Ensure. I couldn't stand any of the flavors besides chocolate. The rest were just nasty.

Smooties are great but are time consuming to make simply because you will need to strain them before she can drink them. Check out The Smoothie Bible.

You can also check out www.dinnerthroughastraw.net

For straining a pair of pantyhose or two are your friend. Really if you liquefy just about anything that you are eating and then run it through pantyhose she should be able to eat it. All of this will be very time consuming.

I hope that helps!

Hi D.,

I market a product line that includes a really delicious-tasting soy protein meal replacement drink. It comes in Dutch Chocolate or French Vanilla. You can mix in fresh or frozen fruit in a blender to make it even more nutritious and add some variety. Email me with your phone number if you'd like to try a can!

What about the protein drink mixes...from GNC. I like the Chocolate Whey Protein mix with low fat milk and a banana. They taste great! (Like a Starbucks Banana Chocolate Vivanno).

I had jaw surgery when I was 16 and was wired shut for 6 weeks and 1 day. I basically lived on V-8 juice and protein drinks. I lost a lot of weight, like 10 lbs. in the first week, so don't be surprised if that happens. (I wish I could be wired shut again, lol)

husband had jaw wired shut about 4 wks ago, I make him a breakfast shake fruit(anything banana, strawberry, blueberry, peach, etc)milk, yogurt, almond or cashew butter(not as strong as peanut-nich milder flavor),protein powder, add either cooked malt o meal, oatmeal, grits, cinamon, honey. I save some for a desssert or afternoon snack.

I make soups and puree them in the blender. Brocoli cheese, tomato basil, butternut squash, bean soup, chicken sausage with veggies, you can be creative.

We got "Fat Straws" from a smoothie shop in west plano and he can eat the soup with that.

I have several tall and also 1/2 size plastic containers on hand.
good luck.

My mom always made me milk shakes with carnation instant breakfast and icecream. By adding that it helps with the vitamins and nutrition when you cannot eat. It always made me feel better after surgery from the dentist.
