C.,
here is mine I too love a soft thick SC!

1 cup butter
1.5 cups Pd sugar
1 egg
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
3 cups flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cream of tarter

375 degrees
1/4 in thick
7-8 mins

I use butter cream frosting, but I use heavy whipping cream not milk and add little bit of almond extract in addition to vanilla.

Happy cooking,

I just made some from the website allrecipes.com for Valentine's Day. They are a soft sugar cookie, and are as thick as you want them to be because you roll them out. The recipe is really easy to make, its just the rolling out and cutting of the dough that takes time. I used icing from the same website and it tasted just like the cookies my roommate's mom used to send us for Valentine's Day back in college. The recipes are called The Best Rolled Sugar Cookies and Sugar Cookie Icing.

1C Margarine
2C Sugar
2 Eggs
1/2tsp Vanilla
1/2 tsp Almond extract
6C flour
1tsp baking soda
3/4tsp Salt
1C buttermilk

Cream Mergarine, Eggs, and Sugar together. Add remaining ingredients. Roll out and cut with cookie cutters.

Bake at 350 for 8 min.

S.'s side notes: I made my own buttermilk (sour milk) and it worked fine, also the flour is going to need to be increased some but not too much because too much flour makes them taste floury. Make sure you refidgerate the dough before you roll it out otherwise it just doesn't work. thicker are often a little better once rolled out.

Good luck!

I cheat. I buy the Betty Crocker's Sugar Cookie Mix. You just have to add butter and eggs.

One kid likes to do the whole bit, put on an apron, rollout the dough, use cookie shapes and one just wants them out of the oven fast! So the mix works for us.

top secret sugar cookies tips: add pudding mix and dont cook until brown. if you want them soft you have to take them out before they start to brown. let them set on the pan for a minute then take them off and cool on newspaper or cooling rack

this is my recipe

1 C butter(i mostly melt the butter before mixing)
1 1/2 c white sugar
2 eggs
1tsp baking soda
1 cap of vanilla
1 package vanilla or french vanilla pudding mix
splash of milk
dash of cinnamon
add flour until solid but not to dry

I use this recipe for rolling out and cutting cookies so you can make it as thick as you like. bake at 350 degrees if you want to make drop cookies instead of roll out cookies just make a ball and press it down with a bottom of a glass dipped in colored or cinnamon sugar

Over the years I have tried several, including the sour cream recipe so many seem to covet. The one I always go back to and has had great response to is a buttermilk recipe.

2c sugar
2 eggs
1 c butter
2 tsp soda
4 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 c buttermilk
2 tsp vanilla
4-5 c flour

Hope you enjoy these as much as everyone here has.
