Recipe for Baby Formula

I need a recipe for baby formula because I don't want to feed my daughter the store bought stuff. There's so many recipes out there, I don't know which one is good.

Please don't give me advice about how I need to be breastfeeding. That's not the question I asked (not trying to be rude). I have my personal reasons for not breastfeeding. I know it's the best thing, but some people just can't do it and I don't want to get into it.

THANKS!!!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I will be talking to my doctor first to see what I should do. I get so irritated with the people who don't answer my question and basically just judge. They also point out the OBVIOUS! I worked with a lactation consultant and alot of things went wrong for me. It was best for me and my daughter for me to stop and that's all I'm going to say because I feel extremely guilty about the reasons why I had to quit.

This is not a question for mamapedia or to just google and go with any old recipe that is on the internet. this is a question for a nutritionist and your pediatrician.

I would NOT make your own formula. There are plenty of formulas out there that are organic and natural, but messing around with proprtions from the internet is insane and can potentially hurt your baby !!! There is only a certain amount of vitamins and other supplements your baby should get a day and if you go over it could be dangerous and the same holds true for needing certain supplements for growth and development.
I never breastfed my first and my last 2 where allergic (regardless of what people say they where) so 1 was on nutriamigen and my son was just on prescriptuon based formula neo cate.
Good luck and I would stick to real formula.

I would talk with your pediatrician or a nutritionist, It is not a bad think to want to make your own in fact I applaude you for having the energy and will to do it. I wish I did. I do want to say that I don't think anything found online would be a safe choice to use. I would go a little deeper and find a good credided book tha thas a recipe or talk with a nutritionist. Not everything found online is good and true. Too much info out there. You could even take the recipes you have found and bring them into a nutritionist and see what they say.

and ignore any pro-breastfeeding people who don't know how to read the full message and abide by your wishes to keep quiet. Some of these women forget that the babies in the past before we had the resources like formula who's moms couldn't breastfeed just died. My daughter lost so much weight her first two weeks because of an inproper latch and loss of milk supply that if formula wasn't there she probably would have died. Breastfeeding is not always the best for every person. And it is great to have other options and even better that you have chosen to skip the mass produced products and try for something better for your daughter.!!! Kudos to you!

I would not make your own formula - there are too many things that could go wrong and you don't want a sick baby.

Is there a reason you want to stop breastfeeding? Breast milk really is the best thing for your baby right now.

My first thought was that nutritionists now know of many substances that babies need for growth that cannot be found in homemade formulas. Then I laughed. I matured just fine with my mother's home made formula. So did my 4 brothers. She also wasn't able to breast feed. I've heard of a couple of recipes for formula that are more inclusive of nutrients than the one my mother and women during that time used. I wish you success in finding one that helps your little one to thrive.

I am disappointed that already someone has asked you why you don't breast feed. The decision is not an easy yes, I will or a no, I won't. My daughter struggled to breast feed her first baby. Pumped at work. She was a temp for awhile and carried this heavy case around with her not knowing if there would be good place for her to do it. Then her daughter wasn't able to latch on and my daughter worked with a lactation specialist to try to manage that. She finally gave up at 6 months. So, sometimes I, too, get irritated when the first answer is always breast feed.

I would consult with your pediatrician if you opt to make your own instead of using a store bought formula. You can find anything on the internet, but very little of what's out there has been clinically proven to be scientifically accurate for your baby's needs. Perhaps your pediatrician can help you focus on what ingredients provide which nutritional elements.

I had to use formula with my daughter when I had to start chemo a few weeks after her birth. When we inquired regarding the brand, our pediatrician could only tell us that he could prove the big, name brands claims were accurate based upon all the studies they've completed and registered with the FDA. He didn't feel as comfortable with generics despite having the same ingredients because they're in different proportions and different manufacturing processes.

Good luck finding what you're looking for.

My best friend made both of her kids their formula. She said she used evaporated milk (or powdered milk), water, and she added supplements that were in a liquid form given by her doctor.
I know it's sort of a shot in the dark (because some doctors wont approve, but who really cares it's your child) but maybe your doctor, or a nutritionist (approved by your insurance company) can give you a formula recipe that they like.
If you find one you like message it to me, I am thinking about doing that for our next one. Good Luck!

Don't ya love how people skim right over the fact that this mom did NOT want advice regarding breastfeeding, and yet--there it is--first response! Grrrrr......must be nice to live in an ivory tower. Sorry BKL--hope you find what you need. Ask your pediatrician for a recipe & good luck.

I also had to stop breastfeeding my daughter. She was about 3.5 months old. I had severe muscle fatigue (and muscle damage) issues and my doctor thought I had Lupus. We switched to formula so that my husband could feed our daughter, especially in the middle of the night, and with the suspicion that the hormone issues were damaging my muscles (I needed at least 10 hours of sleep a night in order to function and somedays even walk!). I don't have anything to offer with the formula thing, but I, also, get upset when people get judgemental about breastfeeding. I know breastfeeding awesome for babies. Two years later, with no diagnosis - even from Mayo Clinic- my muscles have calmed down enough for me to function somewhat normally. My muscles constantly damage and heal, but the "condition" is not progressive. I am now 9 weeks pregnant with number 3 and am already worried about what will happen after the baby is born. I will do my best to breastfeed, but whatever happened to my body/muscles after #2, will likely happen again. I guess my point is, you also did what was best for your whole family. Throw that guilt out the window, it will do nothing good for you or your family. There are millions of healthy, smart and well adjusted children and adults in this world who were not breastfed!

I understand where breastfeeding advocates are coming from. But, some of them could use a little sensitivity. Good luck with the formula!

If you can find a good source for raw goat's milk, you can use that as the base for your formula. If I couldn't breastfeed for some reason, that is what I would do. You can find recipes on westonaprice.org. Just put formula into their search engine. Also, the book, Nourishing Traditions has a recipe, but it is much more complicated to follow.

I would be scared to use a homemade formula. The store bought ones are made to be as close to breast milk as possible, and I'd be worried about the ratios in homemade. I see that you're going to discuss it with your doctor first and I think that's a great idea.

My daughter thrived on Similac and my husband's stepsister's daughter did very well on Enfamil.
