My little girl will be turning one in a few weeks (I can't believe it!!), Does anyone have a good recipe for her first cake. Or can I just buy one? Is there anything in a store bought cake that she isn't supposed to have in her diet yet?

My mom bakes cakes as a serious hobby for friends and family and once in a while a casual wedding. For 1st birthday parties she usually makes a small "cake out of the box" and covers it with Light Cool Whip for the 1 year old. The kid loves it and the frosting's not loaded with sugar and lard like the regular (and yummy-delicious!) adult cake frosting. =)

I'm not sure if there's anything in a store bought cake that she can't have, but if you have the time make her a homemade cake. My mom used to make me homemade birthday cakes and they were always better than any store cake. My mom is gone now and this is one of my favorite memories of her. I even bake my children's cakes every chance I get. It's very simple you can use any yellow cake recipe and for the store cake like I use vanilla frosting and add strawberry preserves in between the layers. You can even decorate it using food coloring or the many other things for cake decorating located in the baking aisle. Good luck and wish your little a Happy 1st Birthday!!

It really is all about the icing! You can buy a smash cake or just make one yourself. Dont know if there is something in it they are not suppose to have or not but every 1st birthday I went to the kids had a regular cake and just ate the icing....LOL>

Hi L.!

Happy birthday to your little girl. Doesn't time fly?? For my daughter's first birthday we opted for cupcakes rather then a big cake and it seemed to be a big hit. I made these, http://www.kraftfoods.com/main.aspx?s=recipe&m=recipe...

Just take the marshmallow's off for her cause that may be a bit much and she could choke but they came out so nice and were alot of fun and I made them will all different flavors so everyone had a favorite!

Good luck and have fun!

L.,

I used this website for a lot of baby food recipes:

Here is a link to their healthy cake recipes.

For my daughter's first birthday, I made the carrot cake with the sugar free frosting. She loved it, and it tasted pretty good. Although it is probably okay to give a one year old a small amount of regular cake, I was paranoid about all the sugar. So I felt good giving her this, even though it was a bit challenging to make, as I had never done a cake before. Hope it helps. Good luck!

If you or someone you know has a Costco membership. The cakes are so good and you can get a sheet cake for $14.99.

I just had my daughter's party over the weekend and found a great chocolate cake recipe online. If you want it email me at ____@____.com
It was an incredibly moist buttermilk chocolate cake (really lowfat....)
I made a cream cheese frosting also that was great.
I had never even made a box cake before and it turned out great.
Good luck. Have fun at her party.

I really wouldn't worry about what's in cakes storebought or homemade.
She's really only going to have very little of it and alittle sugar isn't going to hurt her. It's her birthday, don't worry about making everything sugar free and healthy. It's cake, it's not supposed to be healthy.

whether you buy one or make one, just make sure she has her own smash cake!!! It's the best part of a 1st bday party!
Congrats on making it through a year :)

If she is on no special diet by the docter, I would just get her her own small choclate cake, and let her have at it. then i would get a bigger cake for the other people.

I would just save my energy and buy one. I bought a store bought one for my son and he had no problems with digesting it. If your daughter does not have any noticeable allergies I wouldn't worry about it. She might be to nervous to eat much of it since everyone will be watching her with her first birthday cake. My son had a smash cake and was crying because everyone was watching him instead of eating his cake.

I know everyone has given you good places to look but I will share with you some info about store bought cakes. In all Jewel cakes and most or all regular bakeries and large stores there are many unhealthy ingredients which your 1 year old should NOT, I repeat, NOT be eating. There is hydrogenated oils, toxic for heart development, many have artificial and fake preservatives, flavors, all pie filling in cakes have artificial coloring and it also has another ingredient in cherry and many other berry filling which has an ingredient (I forgot what its called cause I do not buy them) that is carcenogenic. You can look up this info online if you doubt it. I highly recommend you make your own cake for your daughter without crisco or any other artificial oils, no flavorings or colorings. You could make a plain vanilla cake with stevia or agave nectar instead of white sugar and then its quite reasonably ok for her system. I made a very healthy low sweetened chocolate cake and made frosting with agave (its from a cactus and its very healthy but sweet and delicious) and organic cocoa and it was SOOOO good. We had a crowd of about 25 and every single person there wanted seconds or thirds of the cake. So you don't have to compromise taste for health. Good luck and if you need ideas I can give you a recipe or two...It is highly commendable that you are trying to feed her right. Keep up the good work!!!

I had gone to Dominick's and then to a bakery for my son's first birthday cake and learned that there is practically nothing they can make that doesn't have nuts or traces of nuts in it, since they mix everything in the same bowls. Also, I learned that the people who work there know little to nothing about what's safe for a one-year old to eat, so I wouldn't rely on their suggestions. One woman told me she could make a red velvet cake for him - could you imagine, a blood-red cake for his first birthday?! Gross. Not to mention the food coloring that no baby needs... a cake from scratch isn't that hard at all. My sister made carrot cupcakes (no nuts or raisins) and my aunt made a banana cake, both with cream cheese frosting, for my son's parties. He loved them both, and I felt good that there were natural ingredients in it. Let me know if you'd like a recipe. Congratulations on your milestone!
