My 8 week old son just had his 2 month shots and he has had a fever ever since. He has been extremely lethargic, irritabe, and he went 7 hours without eating yesterday and then projectile vomited(right on my husband!) the pedialyte the doctor told me to give him. I took him to the doctor that same day (but later) b/c his fever ran 101.5 with tylenol in him. I have been staying on top of the tylenol. I am curious if anyone else has experienced the fever with the lethargic behavior and how long i am supposed to expect the fever?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for all your advice and support. He has remained irritable and now has crying spells from 9-12 at night. MD thinks its colic, he just doesn't fit the criteria according to my research. Have decided to stagger the injections and have contacted the manufacturers. Thanks again to everyone!

Jennifer has given great advice as well as everyone here so there is not much I can add. I am not a huge proponent of all vaccinations, while most are good some are not needed, e.g. varicella vaccination but that is just my opinion. Make sure to keep detailed notes during his adverse reaction to this specific shot (and any others for that matter) and make sure his pediatrician notates what you have detailed in your son's medical records for legal purposed -- if needed. Every vaccination my daughter has received I demanded that I get the serial number and the manufacturer for record keeping just in case.

Like many others have suggested delaying his vaccination schedule may be best for your child. Children's immune systems are very green to these shots sometimes so parents must be aware of the stuff they put in them. One size does not fit all if you understand what I mean. I fought tooth and nail to seperate my daughter's MMR shot. To this day she still has not had her measles shot because she is not in daycare nor preschool so there was no need for her to get it at the scheduled immunizations that is dictated by the government. And if your pediatrician does not agree delaying your son's schedule find another pediatrician who will listen and understand what you want as a parent. Parent's have lost too many rights when it comes how to raise our children and what we feel is best for them.

Best of luck and God Bless.

ARGH!!!!!!!!

Make sure you get the lot # of the vacine the Dr. used to vaccinate your baby. Contact the pharma Company right away, or go to their website and see if anyone has filed a complaint. They are always trying to find ways to fit 100 viruses into 1 shot. How is a little body suppose to handle all that? Okay they took the Mercury out, what about the Formaldhyde and other toxic chemicals?

My son had a bad reaction to his MMR at 1-years-old. He never got a Hep B, or the Chicken pox vaccine. He'll never get another shot again. My daughter never had a single vaccine. She has been the healthiest of all of us. Go figure.

It is a sensitive issue...only the parents can decide. However, educating yourself on the dangers that may happen and do happen is the parental thing to do before making what the masses think is a "routine" appointment.

I hope your baby feels better soon. My heart goes out to you.

I would definitely contact your doctor if your son's fever hasn't improved and take him back in to make sure he's not having an allergic reaction to any of the shots. And while I don't want to get into a big debate about whether to vaccine or not vaccine (many of my family are pediatricians and have very strong feelings, as do I, about this), if your son is reacting they way he apparently is, it may be better to delay vaccines until his little immune system can better handle the shots. You can discuss a different schedule with your doctor and s/he can recommend when the shots should happen. In my very humble opinion, not getting vaccines at all is a health risk for not only your child, but every other child in your community.

My daughter, sho is now 5 years old, had a similar reaction with the same shots. hes ran a fever between 101-102 and screamed for 3 days. When she wasn't screaming she was very lethargic. She had her shots of a friday and on monday (my first day returning back to work) she was even worse. My husban took her to the pediatrician and she was screaming so bad in the waiting room a doctor ran out because he thought the baby was hurt. the doctor told us that whe was probable allergic to the pertusis vaccine. He sait that that type of reaction can cause a migraine headach and body aches. She has not gotten that vaccine since then and we never had another problem wth her shots. Just keep on top of the Tylenol and doctor if there is no improvement. Also, my kids have never had any luck with pedialyte. Try dilited apple juice. At your son's age I would do 1 oz of juice to 3 oz of water. Some fluid is better than none, plus the diluted juice is not a sweet as the peialyte. Good Luck!

Hi C.,

I would definitely talk to your ped. Fever can last a few days with the shots. Your ped should have taken you thru all the reactions: what's normal and what's not. At the very least they should have given you a pamphlet either at your 1st visit or when your baby got the shot. If your ped or the nurse isn't educating you about the vaccine reactions you should ask them to or get another ped. You shouldn't have to try and figure it out for yourself on a message board.

I spaced out my daughter's shots, we only did two vaccine's at a time. DTaP we did on it's own since it's three vaccine's at once. 2mos is when they usually give DTaP, this is usually a tough shot for kids. If your baby had DPaT in combination with other vaccinations it can cause more severe effects. I would suggest that you only do DTaP by it's self going forward. So that the fevers aren't so bad and you'll get a better sense of which one is causing the trouble.

My daughter is up to date on her shots, it just took a little longer and more frequent ped trips. Also if your doctor gives you a hard time, don't worry about it. They are afraid you won't complete the vacinnation schedule. One of the things I liked about spreading out the shots is you learn quickly which ones bother your child the most so at least your prepared.

If it's going to be hard for you to do two at time, a good one to do as a 3rd is Polio. It's very rare for anyone to have a reaction to Polio. I also found the Hepatitis shots to be less problematic. Prevnar and DTaP were the rough ones for us.

Hope your baby feels better.

Also you can wait on the MMR if you feel like your baby tends to react strongly. I did it at 2yrs.

Pedialyte has a lot of sugar...maybe go with pure water or water with a small amount of juice to get him interested in it. Are you breastfeeding? Nothing can beat that in terms of helping your son's body heal itself from the vaccine's damage. If you can stay on top of the fluids, it might be better to let the fever go higher - it is the body's way to raising the temp beyond what the viruses can endure, and is the body's cure, not just a symptom. I'll definitely be praying for his quick recovery.

Call the doctor immediatedly and get the manufacturer and lot number of the vaccine your son received. This is not a normal reaction, but an adverse one, and it needs to be reported to the manufacturer and to the CDC so that if your son is really injured by this vaccine, you can be eligible for VICAF, the vaccine injury compensation fund. Mercury in the preservative or none, vaccines are loaded with toxic chemicals that were never meant to be put into our systems, and it sounds like your son's system has to work especially hard to combat the huge toxic load placed on it. You might want to consider delaying further vaccination or stopping altogether. You could go to www.mercola.com and read an article called "Dispelling Vaccination Myths", written by a father who read the package insert when he went to vaccinate his son. He realized that his son had a much higher chance of dying from the chicken pox vaccine than of dying from the chicken pox, and only 7 years of immunity! Even if you want your kids in daycare, you can legally opt out of vaccines in almost all states. Just some things for you to consider!

If your baby is having a bad reaction to vaccines, you may want to consider doing a delayed vaccination schedule (esp. if your baby is not in daycare). They can be very h*** o* a little one, and as people discover all of the negative aspects of vaccinations, they often choose to delay shots until the child is older and better able to handle them.

My children are 2.5 yrs and 9 mos and have no vaccinations yet... as they are home with me all day and do not yet have many playmates, I consider the risk of vaccinating them so young to be greater than the germs they are likely to encounter, especially since I make sure they eat nourishing foods to build up their immune systems.

Obviously, this is a sensitive subject and many people have strong feelings about it- but if you listen to your mother's intuition, you can probably decide if your child's reaction seems like a warning sign that your baby can't handle this yet (some cannot, due to genetics, constitution, and whatever other environmental factors are already contributing to allergies and such), or if it's just a concern over getting your child back to normal as quick as possible and not a question of sticking to your doctor's shot schedule.

Definately report these adverse reactions to your doctor and to the pharmaceutical companies. This information helps the companies reevaluate safety, and figure out if there is a problem with a certain batch of drugs.
