Re-using Baby Food

My LO just starting eating solids about a week ago. We "graduated" the rice cereal and yesterday and today we're on avocados. I have been making too much per feeding. I guess I dont have that eye yet.
My question is, is it ok to save and re-use the leftovers? Today we have about half of the bowl of food left (avocado mixed with a little rice cereal and breast milk).

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, everyone, for your replies. I'll just make sure to not put too much in his bowl that he eats out of and will add more if needed.

It's not as healthy if it's not fresh but there isn't a danger to use the leftovers unless she is eating out of the container. Germs from the spoon will breed and there will be an issue then. If you are putting it on a plate and only saving what was prepared you should be fine.

It is not safe if your baby ate directly from the bowl/container you are wanting to save. The bacteria in the saliva can grow in the food. A better way is to scoop small amounts out of whatever you prepare it in into a different bowl. That way you don't waste anything and can refrigerate the letovers.

Absolutely NOT! I work to protect public health and I see so many of these cases where the new parents re-use food then their babies become ill from Salmonella, Listeria, E. coli due to food borne pathogens. Listeria can thrive in cold climates at low numbers. Are you willing to risk the life of your baby just to save a few cents?
If you really must have to save the food, Lisa O.'s idea of freezing the food is o.k.

Here's what I was told. Anything that a spoon went in that had also been in the babies mouth should not be stored and reused...germs.

If it wasn't touched by anything, you can seal it and store it for 24 hours and that's it.

However, if you put breastmilk in it, I wouldn't save it. Toss and start over.

Yes, it's ok just as long as you have'nt feed him/her out of the bowl. It's safe for about 2-3 days. Place in frig right after you get your serving out. Good luck and enjoy.

Sadly, once the spoon that contains his saliva hits the mixture in the bowl, it's no longer a good idea to serve it at a later time. -www.weelicious.com

I always put left overs in the refridge. If you are not feeding straight out of the jar and going to use it at the next feeding I think it is ok. I am not sure but thats my opinion and never had any problems with it. My thinking is that is what I would do with my food or food for older children why not baby food.
I was told (i think by my mom) to never feed straight out of the jar. Don't remember why now but I never did, so it must have made sense at the time.
Hope this helps :)

If you were feeding her with a spoon, and dipping the spoon into the bowl, no you can't use it again. If you make too big of a batch, try using a smaller amount to feed your baby and keep the rest separate.

Try mixing up what you think the baby will eat into a tupperware. Then use one spoon to put it from the tupperware into a smaller serving-from-bowl (you can get the kind that rests on your hand easily or a small tupperware), then use a clean baby-size spoon for feeding. Once the spoon has touched a mouth then back into the bowl that is when the germs enter the bowl. Use the larger spoon to scoop from the larger tupperware and plop it into the smaller bowl as needed. This way you are not cross contaminating it (think of it as double dipping in a chip and dip bowl). Once their immune system is stronger they can deal with their own germs a few hours later. A medical professional or a food specialist would likely tell an adult to toss it too, but in my house I don't have the budget for food wasting, if it doesn't get eaten now, someone will eat it in a few hours. Good Luck and Enjoy This Stage, burritos stuffed with everything is just around the corner.

Put the portion you are serving i a separate bowl/container. You shouldn't dip the spoon back into the large quantity. Otherwise handle it/keep in the fridge like it was your own leftovers.

No- would you eat it? Anything mixed with milk of any kind- get rid of.... You don't reuse the left over breast milk/ formula..... So don't reuse the food...
