My son has a fever of 102.5 and a rash on his face just on cheeks with a few small bumps, he is breathing and acting fine, but I am concerned as it just happened an hr ago. He hasnt eaten anything abnormal, so I am not sure if its an allergic reaction or if theething could cause this. he ran a slight fever yesterday but I got it down within an hr, just wierd.

What can I do next?

They can get a rash from a virus, however it usually shows itself towards the end, after the fever has passed. It could just be from the heat of the fever. I have heard that there is a virus called hand foot and mouth disease that causes children to have red cheeks-google it for symptoms. I hope he feels better soon!

Many times the rash shows after a virus breaks - and fever. Might not amount to anything more. Hope so. Best of luck tonight!

It could be scarlet fever - strep with a rash, fever.

Well we are almost in March and it could very well be a virus.

But with my experience (3 children total ranges in ages 4, 2 and 6 months), it could be Roseola. Normally with that though (it is a virus) you don't see the rash appear until after the fever has broke. Now every kid is different and we aren't doctor's here. When my youngest had it, he developed the rash when he still had the fever, but his fever broke within 5 hours after the rash appeared. How old is he? If he is very young, I would go to Urgent Care tomorrow morning or the ER tonight because you cannot have him get dehydrated. If you give him Motrin/Tylenol, does the fever go down at all? Teething does not cause a rash on the face, but the fever can vary. I was always told by my kids dr that 99-101 is normal for teething, but anything above that could be infection or viral. Keep a close eye on your son tonight. It may be a night of no sleep, but better safe than sorry. If he was teething, he would be uncomfortable usually.

Good luck and be sure to call the dr.

Get him to a doctor. Scarlet fever has been going around this year. Sometimes a child will have strep and NOT be symptomatic. When strep is left untreated it can turn into Scarlet Fever.

Fever accompanied with a rash is definitely a "call the doctor" instance.

My daughter just had something similar, but we tested for strep and scarlet fever and it was negative. Also was not fifth's disease. We spent a night in the ER over it after her temp got to 105.5. But it was just a virus and I've heard several other people who have been going through the same thing. All the same, I would take him and have him tested for strep, etc.

Fifth's Disease. By the time the rash appears he is no longer contagious, that's why it's so prevalent with kids. Fever will subside soon and he will be just fine. No treatment is necessary unless you want to take him to your pedi for a diagnosis to be sure.

Could be strep. It can show up as a rash. Take to dr Monday or soon.

sounds like roseola or Fifth disease. Both are very common viruses.

I would call the doctor right away (and if your doctor does not have a "triage line" 24 hours, you might try an urgent care clinic). This could indeed be as simple as fifth disease, but if your son also has any stiffness in his neck, it could be meningitis. I don't think the meningitis rash usually shows on the face, but it's better to be safe and ask immediately, as meningitis can be extremely serious, extremely fast. Most likely this is something else but check now. The suddenness of this is what would bother me most -- it does seem almost like an allergic reaction or something very fast-moving.

You need to take him in right away to the doctor. My son just had strep followed by scarlet fever.
