Rash on Back of Knees- Yeast?

Hi! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. My 18 month old baby boy has developed a tiny little red area behind each knee in the last four days.It is quite red, long and narrow. I called the pediatrician and the nurse I spoke to recommended Cortaid. I tried it for two days and then switched to the ointment they gave me for a possible yeast infection in the diaper area a few months ago. I was going to give it a few days and then take him in. Any advice? I have never seen this before. I'm trying to suppress my natural tendency to panic :) . I forgot to mention that it is not oozing at all - so not blister-appearance - more like what a burn looks like.

What can I do next?

Hi H.~
My advice is a little different. My babies are chubs till toddlerhood and sometimes if I missed a 'roll' at bathtime I would notice a red spot in the folds later on. Cleaning it well and keeping it dry with cornstarch was always my remedy. Creams may just make it more irritated. Give it a shot...

Is it smelly, smelly=yeast. Try to keep the area dry, and in the light. Yeast hate light. I know it is cold out so it will be hard but just turn up the heat and let him be in his diaper or even some shorts on top of the diaper should be ok.
I would try the cream for the diaper area, just make sure to do it for the full 10 days 2 times a day. Otherwise the yeast will come back even stronger.
If you don't see an improvement i'd call the doc on Monday. No need to worry about it this weekend, unless your little guy seems bothered by it.
O and make sure to wash your hands after you touch it, especcially if you are going to touch the diaper area next.

I would try some diaper rash cream on it. It protects skin from moisture and has some drying and healing ing.

My kids also had a similar rash. It was also in the crook of their elbows (on their forearms). My doc said it was eczema. I agree, though, if you can't get it to go away in a few days, take him in - especially for your peace of mind.

I agree with Cindy. My son had that when he was a little guy. The only thing that would work was this stuff called aquaphor and it worked great! Good luck and don't panic mom!!!

My kids and I get eczema. My oldest son most commonly gets it on the back of his legs, behind his knees. My daughter gets itchy red sore spots on her torso and legs. I try not to over-bathe the kids and I never add bubble bath or anything else. I use rich, nonperfumed lotions. The best lotion I have found to date was recommended by a dermatologist. I have to go to a pharmacy to find it. You may have to special order it. It's called Vanicream, and it works really well. When our eczema flares up, I sometimes apply benadryl cream(or generic)and that helps. I have had luck also with Melagel from Melaluca, if you know someone who sells it. Good luck whatever it turns out to be. Happy Holidays!

I have two kids that have always had eczema. And behind the knees is where you see it a lot. I use a hydrocortisone cream (which is what Cortaid is). I would use it about two or three times a day. If you really think it's yeast, feed your baby yogurt (if he's not allergic to milk). You can even put plain yogurt on the rash itself. Yogurt eats bacteria, which is what yeast is.

To me it kinda sounds like eczema!! my son has eczema and that is one of the first places he gets it .. maybe try putting some good , thick , no fragrence/perfumed lotion like Aquaphor ( thats the best) or eucerin .. i think my doc said even petroleum jelly will help..and see how that helps .. do it right after he gets out of the bath...if you are still a little iffy go get him checked out just to make sure. plus it will ease your mind.

eczema, sounds like it to me. My DD has it also behind her knee's, arm pits. It gets the worst with the cold weather. I use the Alveeno eczema cream. I found that works the best. We can only use alveno products on her anyway.
But if you need peace of mind, take her DC in, better safe then sorry.

Excema...my children both have it and I thought it was an allergic reaction to grass (my daughter got it on the back of her legs every time she sat on it) and strawberries (my son got it on his front and back every time he eats them). Allergies? Nope! Excema, it makes the skin more prone to allergic reactions to things, but the actual cause is excema. I put baby oil on them after each bath (because I always forget to put lotion on) and it goes away after about a week. When it's really bad though, our doctor gave us a mild steroid cream that helps with the itching and swelling of the rash. Go to the doctor to verify though. Good luck!

It might just be the dryer weather getting to him. Try using Vaseline on the area right after his bath, to keep the moisture in.

My husband gets really bad rashes on the back of his knees and in fact it is eczema. If it is eczema try Eucerin Creme. You can get it at any store. But make sure it is creme because the lotion dries it out, making it worse. One more thing, try not to use steroid creme all the time. When it gets really bad use hydrocortizone creme. You can get that at the store as well...works great.

Ok...I started searching google for "baby rash on back of knees" because my son (13 mo.) has a horrible rash on the back of his knees and on the inside of his elbows (where the arm bends). (Thanks for your question, it answered mine!) I tried baby unscented lotions, and if I consistently (every diaper change) put it on it starts to go away. Someone suggested to try baby oil...so all day I put oil on his rash and tonight it is worse than ever!(DON'T DO OIL...if your baby has sensitive skin...as one lady said some things will only irritate it worse.) Now when I put anything on it, it hurts him. So I'm going to try what some of you all suggested. Thanks!
