Rash Around the Neck

Hi, my almost 4 month old has a red spotty rash around his neck and upper chest. He has no fever and does not seem to bother him other than looking really red off and on. It looks like a heat rash but it seems not to be going away. My husband and I cannot think of what we have done differently if it is due to an allergic reaction (like to the detergent, et..). Any suggestion on what I can do to clear it up? Creams, washes, or powders?? I been putting a little corn starch baby powder hoping that will help... (BTW...he is also teething - an earlier started) Thanks! C.

So What Happened?

Just an update...well the little guy still has his rash and it would flare up then dimish but never really going away. He had his 4 month well-check the other day and the doctor said it was eczema. So she gave us a prescription cream and within 24 hours the rash as almost gone! Thanks for all your help!

Is your son eating yet? I know he's 4 months but my daughter has a strawberry allergy and it sounds like the rash she gets when she gets strawberry's. If anything you are giving him has strawberry/strawberry flavoring in it-stop for a few days and it will clear up on its own.

I agree with everyone, it can be a heat rash but its most likely from drool. Dont put any creams on it, cream locks in moisture, you want to keep it as dry as possible so it can heal. Putting powder on it a few times a day and keeping it dry always helped my daughters rashes clear up in a few days, if not sooner. Try only powder and see how that works.

My son had this SO bad about that time. It stunk too sometimes. I had put gold bond powder with wonderful results, but the pediatrician was adament that you NOT use powder as they can inhale the fine dust and develop asthmatic sx. I felt terrible that I had been using powder. He told me it was from sweat, drool, breastmilk or formula being trapped in there. He told me to put petroleum jelly there to protect the skin, which didn't make any sense to me as it looked so red/wet; why would I want to put more stuff there. I thought I should try to dry it out, hence the powder. But we used the petroleum jelly and sometimes a&d ointment and it worked like a charm!

He could be allergic to milk. If he is formula feed consider changing him to a soy based formula. To treat the rash, use Aquaphor.

Good Luck.

My 5 month old just started having this problem (well, his rash is not really bad enough to call a problem). I attribute it to the increase in drool associated with teething. On days when he is particularly drooly - I put a bid on him to help keep his chest and neck dry. Plus I wipe his face and neck with a burp cloth periodically throughout the day.

It may just be from the drooling, both our girls would get that when teething. Try putting a thin layer of vaseline aquaphor on it - that way it repels the drool so to say. If you use anything else it will most likely mix together and spread. Good luck!

It could be ezcema. I would bring him to the dr. to confirm because he is so young. It is very common, especially in the winter, when it gets so dry. There are creams you can use, that will help, like eucerin, or even aveeno. What are you using to bathe him? I would not use anything with any chemicals in it. Try Burt's Bee's baby wash, it works great, and it has no added stuff in it. My daughter, now 6, gets ezcema breakouts, and it has been great since I started using Burt's Bee's wash. Hope that helps.

Hi,

It sounds like he has a rash from saliva. Is he drooling a lot since he's teething? My daughter drools a lot and we just keep a bib on her all the time. Her rash cleared up quickly once we did that.

It's probably from drool. Both my kids had that. Try some diaper cream.

Dealing with that right now! Keep his neck dry, change bibs often. I was using A & D, but now I am using Desitin. It is working! Almost completely gone in 2 days.

Does he drool a lot? All three of my kids went through this when they were teething. the best thing you can do is keep it dry as possible. I think I went 10 bibs a day and it felt like I was changing their shirt with every diaper change, but that was the only way to keep them dry. I used cornstarch, but i found that when it got wet it turned into paste and then there was little patches of wet corn starch on their neck. I took my youngest to the doc for it because hers was really bed and the doc said the best thing to do is keep it dry!!!! Good Luck
