Rash Around the Mouth

Hi,

My almost 2 year old has a rash which comes and goes. The rash is mostly around her mouth. She does get red cheeks when she eats something spicy, but I think that is unrelated. Has anyone had this happen? I recall someone posting a similar question a while back, but darned if i could not find the post. Anyway, it could be from teething. I do not think it is an allergy, but it could be. If someone has had an experience like this, I would welcome advice on how to treat it. If there is a natural creme or something, that would be great. Thanks in advance. :)

Blessings,

Katherine

So What Happened?

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the great information! We went to our naturopath and she agreed that it was a rash caused by candida. In case you don't know what that is, it is also called thrush and yeast. It is very mildly irritating her, but majorly disturbing my hubby and I. We are now on a strict diet to rid the body of bad bacteria. I had no idea that candida was such a catalyst to other issues. We did a lot of research, and are much better informed now. Again, thank you for all the responses. :)

Blessings,

Katherine

Hello,
For a while my daughter had something like that. Does your daughter use a pacifier? I found that the pacifier was causing the rash. I think it had something to do with drool and that area of her mouth being constantly wet. I would put lotion on it. But nothing really helped until she stopped using the pacifier. Of course, if your daughter doesn't use a pacifier then this whole post has been useless. I really hope it gets better soon, and if it doesn't just call and ask her pediatrician. Good luck.

Hi Katherine,

It's so difficult when little ones get a rash or something that comes and goes. It can drive you crazy at times. Do you notice it more at some times versus others? Does she wake up with it or do you notice it more after she has been playing with something? The reason I ask is that she may be drooling while she's sleeping or rubbing her face on the bedding. Or if it is a toy, it could be the material the toys are made from. Just guesses. If you can try to see when it does appear, after some specific activity or after eating something in particular that might help. Do you clean with anything that she may be allergic to? There are so many products out there that use harmful toxins and chemicals in their products, especially cleaning products. A friend of mine was dusting and noticed that the spray was causing an allergic reaction with her son. That day onward she switched to products that don't contain harmful chemicals. I switched my products too and shop from an online store. Once I found out about all the harmful ingredients in products, that was enough for me.

I'd keep a watch on your daughter and see if you can make a connection to the time she develops the rash and what she was doing prior to the development. With all the recalls for toys, it may be a toy that she likes to suck on or something she likes to mouth. At 2 they are still putting a lot of things in their mouths. I hope this helps somewhat.

Best to you,
M.

My daughter has the same problem. I thought it was just chapped skin but when I took her in to her doctor for her yearly exam she told me it was eczema and the really bad part above her mouth was infected. She gave me some steriod cream for the infection and then Bactroban 2% cream for everyday use. Within one application we saw a huge improvement. It's still there (it's been 2 months since we got the medication) but very faintly, some days we can't even see it. It flares up occasionally and we just put more cream on it. THe doctor said that it can become infected easily since food is coming into contact with it all the time, not to mention dirty hands. We seem to have gotten it under control. It might be worth having her looked at. Hope this helps.

My daughter used to get a rash around her mouth from her pacifier. I think the drool would get trapped behind during the night and irritate the skin. I put some Neosporin on it for a day or 2 and it hasn't come back yet.

My daughter had a rash on her chin/mouth area, I took her to the doctor and glad I did! They gave me an ointment that worked pretty quick and said to use it again if it ever came back because it was likely to, but never really has! It happened mostly when she was teething, probably a reaction to the increased drool. Sounds normal but doesn't hurt to get it checked out if it's been a few days!

My son had the same issue when he was around the same age. I ended up taking him to the Dr. because I was worried about it. They asked me how much juice he drank and thing like that. They thought it might be a reaction to constantly being wet. He said to keep it mosturized and it went away on it own. It helped to find out that our son drooled at night also so that contributed to the problem. Soo...to sum it up, my advice it to keep lotion on it and try to keep it dry. Hope it works out.
