Rash Around Mouth

OKAY...I need some help! Our 7 month old has a rash around her mouth...that is coming and going. We have taken her to the Doctor TWICE now! The first time we took her, the doctor gave us some Bactroban Cream that I put on 3 times a day right before her nap, and keep her Pacifier away until it clears up! Well, it worked! The rash went away...then about 2 weeks later it re-appeared! We went to the Doctor right away after that...and we came to the conclusion that it was probably her Pacifier...since we knew it wasn't a food allergy. The Pacifier was a MAM and it had these bumps on the inside of the Pacifier, right where her rash was showing up. We then threw those Pacifiers away and cleaned her toys AGAIN...bought her some new Pacifiers (NUK) and it seemed to have cleared up...we thought we were in the clear. Then today, it shows up again! It's mild, and it has been from the beginning...never too bad, but non-the-less it's still a rash, and it's bothers us...doesn't seem to bother her at all! ANY SUGGESTIONS?! We would LOVE to know if anyone else has experienced this...before we head to the Doctor for a THIRD time! PLEASE HELP! Thank you!

So What Happened?

Thank You to all the Mom's that gave some GREAT advice! I had one response that wasn't advice, but strictly opinion on Pacifiers...so THANK YOU to those who gave me some wonderful avenues to try out. After reading all the reponses, and talking with my husband about what we should do, we concluded with the idea of it being the moisture. So, since she doesn't get her Pacifier that often...meaning not at naps, and very rarely during the day...we decided to not give it to her during bedtime as well. She usually spits it out by the time we go to bed a couple hours after...she didn't like it the first couple of nights...but the rash is ALMOST gone! We have also been putting on Aquaphor made by Eucerin, at each diaper change and when she goes down for a nap or bedtime! It really is clearing up nicely...funny how it's somewhat of a simple fix...it goes to show that we are first time parents by making two trips to the Dr.'s before it cleared up with some awesome advice from other parents! Again, Thank You! We REALLY appreciate it!

My son has had and still still has this problem at 3 and a half. Its because when kids have pacifiers, bottles, or in my sons case fingers in thier mouths they drool. For some reason this causes the rash around the mouth. Its not a big deal, my dr. told me to use hydracortozone cream on my son. not a whole lot just a little tiny bit will do it.

We had the same problem with the rash. Our doctor told us to put a 1% cortisone cream on with every diaper change. This cleared it up for a while, but ours kept coming back too. Once our 7 month old (15th of August) cut his bottom teath it went away. I have been more carefull about keeping his binky clean, so I am not sure which one solved the problem.

Good luck,

It sounds like she might be allergic to the plastic of the pacifier. I'm not sure if they make pacifier's out of something natural. Does she have any stomach reaction to milk in a plastic bottle? I am allergic to plastic (Formeldihyde-not sure if spelled correctly). Some doctors call it allergic, some call it VERY sensitive. Maybe ask doctor about it. There isn't any medicine for it, you just have to avoid things. I hope it turns out okay.

Hi C.,

It sounds like it could be a food allergy. I would get her tested at an allergy place for that. Especially if it coming and going... It probably is nothing to worry about, but once you find out which food it is, it most likely will disappear.
Another thing could be scratching. My little girl has scratched at her face before, and that has happened. It is the germs under the fingernail that can cause it. Have a wonderful day!

Blessings,

Katherine

I would also wonder if it is an allergy. A food allergy had not occurred to me as a posibility since you mentioned the pacifier, but I suppose it's possible. I was going to ask what type of pacifier nipple you are using...the clear plasticy type or the brown rubbery type...perhaps try switching and see if that solves the problem...or just get rid of the pacifiers and if she needs the comfort, try to convince her that her thumb would be fine instead of the binky. Good luck!

It may just be from the moisture from the pacifier, it may be time to throw it out permenently, it seems with everything else you have tired it only works when the pacifier is not being used..... try it :)
Good Luck

I agree with most responses that it is related to the saliva as we too do have problems with the "drool rash" mostly when teething. At the first dot of rash, we put on Aquaphor healing ointment and keep putting it on regularly several times a day. It was recommended by our pediatrician and is on the shelf at your grocery store (probably, we got it at Safeway). It has the consistency of vaseline and does contain "petrolatum 41%". It stays on better than diaper creams and is clear so you can see what is happening to the skin under the ointment.

I have a 14 month old and I know he isn't ready to give up the binki yet and I doubt your daughter is either so this might be a good way to take care of the problem with the least amount of stress for everyone involved.

Good luck!

Hi, C.,
We had the same problem with my son. Is your baby teething, and maybe drooling more than normal? is she sucking really hard when she sleeps? Why I ask, is thats when I noticed that my sons rash would appear is when he was teething, he drooled and the lack of air and the rubing from the pacifier made almost like capped lips, but in a big cicle around his mouth, right were the pacifier would sit. If her rash is like my sons we did chapstick during the day and took his pacifer away as much as possile so the skin could breath, it would clear up pretty well, and when the teething subsited the rash would go away. Hope that gives you some ideas.

Hi C.. I've been told that rashes around the mouth are caused by saliva. Is your daughter teething? Teething usually produces more saliva, then that saliva gets trapped under the binky, which in turn causes the rash. The same thing happened to my son from about 3-5 months old. He was always chewing on his hands and always had drool around his mouth. He hasn't had that rash in months and still has his binky. I have him on the Playtex Ortho-Pro binkys and they haven't caused any rashes so far. I don't think it's necessary to go back to the doctor for it. Maybe just holding out a little longer to see if it clears on it's own or take the binky away altogether. I hope this helps.

I was the same way and so were all 4 of my children and drs just recently figured out what it was. I am allergic to my sweat which is weird but when myself or my kids sweat we break out and when a child is sucking on a pacifier it causes them to sweat around the mouth which in turns causes a rash. i have to give my baby benedryl when she has to have a binkie and i take benedryl on a reg basis . i hope this helps you. best of luck .

i would say this is from moisture...my son had the same issue...more in the summer than any other season but still got it when he had his pacifier, sometimes the bottle. he also got it when he was teething. All the research i did about it and questions to his doctor came to the conclusion that it was from liquids (drinks, sweat, spit) i'd just keep an eye on her...as long as it's not open soars she should be fine, it should pass.

Hi C.,

Sounds like the perfect time to start weaning her from the paci, could be the rash is just be from the prolonged wetness against her skin. How dependent on it is she? Does she need it to sleep each time? Does she need it during the day? I know some babies need the sucking time more than others. You might try allowing her to fall asleep without it - begin a new routine for falling asleep (if she needs it then). If she uses it alot during the day for comfort it will be easier to lessen its use then. I know one of my daycare families had this problem with their 8mos old and she began to put a thin layer of vaseline on his chin at night before putting him down. At my place I gradually weaned him completely off it (over about 2wks) by using other methods of comforting him when he would usually have it. I don't know that I would recommend the vaseline thing as a fix though, as he always had that faint rash again on Monday morning. Maybe some babies skin are just more sensitive.

My daughter had the same thing and the doctor gave us some cream, forget what it was. Basically it was just from the drooling caused by teething. It went away after awhile. It defenitly wasn't pretty but my sister said her children each got it as well. I wouldn't worry about it. I hated it just because of pictures and such and it was around Christmas time. But I think it just goes away on it's own.

We've had this problem as well. I found that washing the binkies more frequently really helped. I never thought about diaper ointment on the face, but I know that I would sometimes forget to wash the binkie in soap regularly and when I started doing that it cleared up fairly quick. I did it before naps and bedtime. I also started carrying the bink in my pocket and only giving it to him when he needed it (bedtimes and fussy times) and that also helped my ability to understand his garbled first words and I think helped him get used to not having it but without him suffering. Good Luck. Jen

My son has the same problem. He drools a lot, and still uses his binky, so that is the problem. We, too, tried several different ones in an effort to make it go away...nothing works. As long as they drool & suck on a pacifier, it's going to be there. My son still gets it off and on, and what we do is put a little vaseline on it a few times. It's not a big deal, and we've never taken him to the doctor because of it, because we figured it would be a wasted trip. He has had it at times though when we've taken him for his well-baby checks, and the ped. just says the same thing, that it won't stop coming every once in a while until the paci is gone.

i didn't read your responses yet, and i'm someone probably said this, but i think its just from having the pacifier against the skin and being moist. kind of like a diaper against the skin. if you can't get her to give them up, then i would just try to give it to her sparingly and take it out occassionally and dry it and her face. i hope it doesn't come back!

Maybe it's just from pacifiers in general. Maybe the pacifier is letting drool sit around her mouth and it's getting irritated. I thought maybe that might be it because my son used to get a rash on his chin from drooling. Try just not giving her any pacifier and see if it clears up. :)
