Radon Mediation - Help! Alarmingly High...

A neighbor was selling her home and during inspection it came up that her radon level was 10+ (it should be 4 or less). It has prompted many of us in our subdivision to test for radon levels. It's said that 1 in 15 homes have high levels of radon in their homes but it is seeming that EVERYONE in our subdivision is testing RIDICOUSLY high. I did a short-term test and have now learned that it doesn't provide the most accurate results. Although it seems that you could be at 4 one day 8 the next and back down to 4 and that this pattern repeats for 30 days but that mediation should still be done (rain/humidity can affect the levels). The thought of what is involved with radon mediation and the cost scares the poop out of me. I did just purchase a long-term radon detector so we'll see what happens over the next 30 days. We have been in this house over 5+ years but now knowing of these alarmingly high levels is freaking me out. Has ANYONE gone through this? If so, what was your experience? What company did you hire? Reviews?

What can I do next?

Where we lived in Pa about 95% of homes had migiation systems. We tested in Ohio before moving in and it was elevated. Levels do flucuate a lot and they told us if it hadn't rained during the test it may have been under, it spiked to about 12. I t was about 700 I think for the system and level is now well under four. The EPA recommends everyone test. Our home here average was around ten, they said that really wasn't high relative to what has been seen.

We've been in our house for 14 years. About 2 years ago we tested the radon level just to see what it was. Off the friggin charts!!!!! It was a 25!!!

We hired a guy to come in and vent out our house, $1200 for the whole job. Every day until he did the job, even though it was the middle of winter and below 30* most days, we'd come home from work and open ALL the windows for 10minutes to air out the house.

Even though only long term exposure side effects are talked about, I can't help wondering if it's played some part in myself developing asthma at the age of 31 (totally out of the blue) and my 7 y/o just had bronchitis...she's gotten either bronchitis or pneumonia for 5 years in a row!!! I know there's probably no correlation, but I just can't wondering.

we have had to do mitigation twice, and expect it will cost around 1000. Until then, air out the house as much as possible. Freaked me out too, the first time. We had had the levels checked when we bought the house-fine-then we gradually replaced windows. Not sure at what point we sealed up the house TOO well. No one mentioned this to us when we were doing the windows, so a thought for you mama's. This house at least I knew to check right away.

When we were buying our house, we had it inspected for radon, and the numbers were around 25 in the basement. We had a remediation system put in, and everything is fine. We have a radon detector, and have someone come out to check the levels every few years. The levels are now very low --I think below 1.0.

As long as you put in an extraction system, it is no big deal. Many houses in Illinois have high radon levels. They are especially high in basements because the sump pumps pump the gas into your home. Make sure you have your sump well sealed too. It is no surprise that everyone in your subdivision has high radon levels. It is in the ground beneath you, and you all probably have similar soil composition under your houses.

I can't remember what company we hired to do the remediation, but I would never hire them again. They were on the pricier side ($1400), and I thought we would get good service. The people they sent out to do the work were very rude, and they damaged our roof when they put in the extraction pipe. Get at least three quotes, check their references, and when they are finished, inspect their work (especially on the roof) to make sure they didn't cause any damage to your property. Good luck to you!
