Radio Station Suggestions in MI

Hi Mamas,

I generally listen to Magic 105.1 as it is a family friendly radio station - so I thought. They are now so sponsored by the tv that we are now inundated with commercials for CSI etc that involve bombs, shooting and death and the morning show regularly talks about sexual issues (in a gentle not-in-your-face kind of way) but these are things I don't want my 5 year old hearing when we are driving to and from Kindergarten. In addition Katy Perry and Lady Gaga lyrics are not so kid friendly "sex on the beach" etc.

I really don't want to listen to the Wiggles etc everytime we are in the car, I want to be able to hear the traffic and weather and occassionally discover that there is a world out there so...

What radio stations do you listen to that you don't have to worry about little ears hearing inappropriate subject matter?

Thanks

So What Happened?

Wow! Thanks ladies for all the suggestions. I will make a list and try a different station each week. I do actually listen to Doug on occasion and I need to get NPR programmed into my radio. We are generally silent on the way to school unless DD has decided to be a baby dragon or dinosaur that has just hatched out of an egg! If the radio is on she listens and asks questions about what she is hearing. Thanks again.

93.1FM

93.9FM

And I keep some CD's in my car like, "The Cars" soundtrack is a fave for all of us. We all enjoy some Al Green, Billy Joel, and Bread too.

I suggest subscribing to satellite radio.
I subscribe to XM...its about $13 per month, and you'll find it easy to get a station that suits your needs that way.

I usually listen to Doug 93.1 or The River 93.9 - they play a nice mix of songs without the ones that you are finding objectionable. There's also the a.m. all-news station WWJR 950. I'm not sure where you can find NPR but that's another option.

There are always CDs too if you just want music without commercials. My daughter is 3 and I am not stuck just listening to "kiddie" music (because I flat-out refuse). I like Dave Matthews Band and Jack Johnson and she seems to too. Jack Johnson did the soundtrack to the Curious George movie and that is one of our favorite CDs. When my stepsons were younger, they liked it when I played the Beatles and Elvis. I also like the Putumayo World Music CDs as well.

Hello, I so can appreciate your question. I love love xm radio!! So many options for you and the kids. I too love 105.1 but understand your concern. If you don't want to spend $ for xm. There are some great cds out there my daughter and I use to listen to and it was a fun bonding time in the car. But sometimes silence is golden and in silence things come up maybe we would of never talked about if we were listening to the radio :) hope this helps~

I used to love to listen to songs on the radio until I got hooked on the talk shows like Rush or Gaddis. The topics are more political, but very interesting. AM 760, AM 1400, or AM 1200.

103.5 WMUZ is a Christian radio station. Has great contemporary music. However 12-5 is a talk show. There is an am radio station as well. If you look at www.wmuz.com.

This radio station has really helped me to start the day right.

Hope you like it as well.

Always listen to 93.9 when the kids are in the car! There's no "morning show" it's just music.

I listen to Star 105.7 when I want music - it is oldies (80's and 90's) and some of the more popular stuff. But the morning show is family friendly.

Otherwise, I get my news from Michigan Radio NPR. They have three stations that cover Ann Arbor, Flint, and Grand Rapids: 91.1 Flint, 91.7 Ann Arbor / Detroit, 104.1 Grand Rapids. Sometimes the news can be very descriptive - but the day time news shows are usually ok. My son and I especially like to listen to "Science Friday" from 2-4pm every Friday with Ira Flato.

I hope you are able to find a radio station you enjoy and is ok for your kids to hear too.

I like 760 AM. News and weather is usually on at the hour and half hour It is talk radio the rest of the time. You could try just singing together on the way to school or just chatting. 5 year olds usually have alot to say!

I listen to 99.1 and Smile fm. I try to stay away from everything else because I have kids of all ages in my car and like you don't want them hearing stuff like that.

I listen to WJQ 99.3. When my girls were little, I switched. Now they sing along to some good songs.

93.9 offers good music and they have news & weather. Not a whole lot of other talk in the morning on this sation.
