My husband is a musician and needs to find a secluded quite place he can go to write his music. He has tried several forest preserves in the area and they seem to be either too crowded or the bugs are unsufferable... Anyone have any ideas? Could be a place for the day or somewhere with a cabin or other lodging for overnight stays.

We live in Streamwood and he would like to find somewhere that's within and hour or 2 drive.

Thanks in advance

You didn't say where u live so It's hard to say where he can go without traveling miles. I live in Elk Grove by Busse woods on Arlington Heights Rd. He woods are peaceful there every weekday and bugs come out at night not during the hot sun. There are pavilions and only the tiny finchs fly in and out...they're really quite peaceful. Evening is when the mosquitos come out. During noontime people park around the lots and eat in their cars and read their newspapers. I've gone there many times from 7a.m. till lunch just for the peace and quiet. Pull into the woods from the Arlington Heights rd entrance and turn left at the 1st street and drive to the end (that way the bicyclists have no path there to bother him).

White Pines is a great forest preserve - It has cabins, dining and is huge so finding a place to write without interuption should be easy.

Good luck!

If he doesn't mind driving a little further, there is a beautiful retreat center in Three Rivers Michigan called Gilchrist. It's about a 3 hour drive from the Chicago-area- but well worth it. It's a very quiet, peaceful place. It has secluded cabins (ask for Heathrow, it's a little cabin in the woods- the other cabins are in a clearing), and plenty of trails. It also backs up to a monastary. Last time I was there, several years ago, Gilchrist visitors were allowed to use the labryinth on the monk's property.
It's a very inspiring place.
