Hello-
I am embarrassed to ask all of you about Birth Control but I cannot get a straight answer from my Docotor or Pharmasist! I was prescribed Alesse (a Birth Control Pill) and I am wondering how long it takes before it is effective. One nurse told me 7 days, my doctor said to ask my pharmasist and the pharmasist said maybe a month. Also can I take any kind of cold meds while on the pill? I like to drink Chamomile tea, just your average tea but neither my doctor or pharmasist seems to know what it is (can you belive that, a whole bunch of college education and no idea what chamomile tea is!) they think it is an herbal supplement. Anyways if anyone can give me any info on this I would really appreciate it!
Thanks!
I know I sound a little irritated, and I dont mean to be, my husband is only home for a short time before going to Iraq so we want to make the most of the time he is here :)

What can I do next?

You may also want to check this out...read it all the way through.
(Also ask the pharmacist if there's a way to use them as Emergency Contraception...I saw a website that mentioned you could use the same pills for that, too.)

I think the tea is fine...you may want to ask another pharmacist, though, too. To some people, Chamomile is an herbal supplement...just in liquid form. :)

If you're looking for contraception for just the month, maybe try something else that's effective right away???

I was on this pill for quite a while before I had my son. I took regular over the counter medications without incident. I'm not really sure when it begins to be effective, but I'm pretty sure I waited at least a week, mayber more, before ditching the "back-up." No one really told me when I would be "safe", I just guessed. I made sure that I took it at exactly the same time every day which I think helped it be effective since it is a lower dose than some of the other pills out there. You will need to be careful if you have to take any antibiotics. My doc told me when I needed to take an antibiotic that the effectiveness of the birth control would be reduced (like with most bc pills).

N.--I can't really give you advice about the birth control pill, but it sounds like you need a new pharmacist and a new doctor. You're asking simple questions that both of them should be able to answer.
Let me know if you need an ob/gyn recommendation.

N.,
Please! Have no embarrassment over asking about birth control, there is no reason to, you are an adult woman and should ask if you need it, most of us have been there! I have two different pieces of advice. First, I would agree with your nurse, I was always told that BCPs are effective after seven days. Did anyone tell you when your were supposed to start? Most Docs say the first sunday after you start your next period, but it varies. I drank tea all the time on the pill, that should not in any way effect it, nor should cold meds. BC is a hormone that sort of fools your body into thinking that it is pregnant already, therefore you have no need to ovulate. My other advice is this: DITCH your doc and your pharmacist fast. This type of lack of information is absolutely unacceptable. I have never heard of a doc who couldn't tell you when your birthcontrol would kick in. Ask your pharmacist! And he said MAYBE a month. Do not put up with that, this is your body, BC is not a shameful thing to talk about and you deserve to be better informed. Sorry, I know I'm irrate, but no one would accept this level of information about any other kind of medication, it isn't acceptable for BC either.

Hi there,
Don't be embarrased. If you don't know the answer,it's always better to ask...That being said, I work in a pharmacy and I'm a mom. Cold medication that is available over the counter and not Behind the counter is fine to use.
For complete protection, wait a month. Use alternate means during this time (condoms etc,). Chamomile tea is just fine as well. Some herbal supplements and antibiotics can alter the effectiveness of birth control pills.
I'll say a prayer for you and your family to be safe during this time of war. God bless...
L.

Hey N.,

The chances of a pregnancy within 30 days of a new BC Pills are reduced, but still there. In fact, we conceived our twins during the first month of me switching to BC pills.

Dr's and Pharmacists have little training in herbal supplements - unless they actively seek to get more. Chamomile IS considered an herbal supplement. In tea it's the same thing only in a tea form and some herbal supplements can impact the effectiveness of your BC pills. Herbal supplements in tea tend to be in lower doses than those in pill form, so I think your safe.

I don't think you'll have a problem with any cold meds and BC pills. I know many, many women who have taken cold meds while on BC pills and haven't gotten any problems.

If you wanting to make the most of your time, is it possible to get the shot, patch, or something else that's a little more effective? I have an IUD so I don't know these other methods do, but I really think it's 30 days for full effectiveness and if I were in your situation I would look for something that doesn't take so long.

Good luck! And enjoy your husband!

;)
