Questions About Ultrasound Accuracy...

Hi Ladies,
I'm a first time mom so I'm asking some basic questions. I went yesterday for my 19 week ultrasound and was told that I am having a boy. The lady who was doing the ultrasound showed us exactly where she was looking to see "the little boy part", and all 4 of us in the room saw exactly what she was talking about. She seemed absolutely sure, not questioning herself at all! My question is, how often are ultrasound technicians right about the baby's gender? This ultrasound tech seemed highly skilled at locating all the babies parts and doing measurements. I have no doubt about her ability of doing an excellent scan. I just don't want to be all convinced that this is my "little guy" and get ready for his arrival after buying everything in blue, to find out in about 4 to 5 months that this was a big "oops". Anybody ever had an ultrasound technician who was sure of what you were having to be wrong or are they usually correct?

What can I do next?

When I was pegnant the tech was the same way. Se was right. My husband and I took the precaution, though, of buying neutral colors or items that could be for either boy or girl.

C., sometimes the tech can mistake the embylical cord for the boy part. They usually are right 95% of the time. I hope this helps, A.

Congratulations on your healthy pregnancy!

My dr was right on with my ultrasound. That being said they were wrong three times with my mom (we were all three suppose to be boys), but that was a long long time ago and technology has come a long way. If all four of you saw it, I would not be concerned - just enjoy!

To back up what one other woman said, if you could see "it" then she's possibly pretty close to being right. Our ultrasound was done at 14 weeks and our tech saw the "outdoor plumbing" (as she put it) quite clearly. We did do another ultrasound at 28 weeks just to make sure, though...plus we wanted another look at our little guy.

Good luck to you!

Congrats! I've had 4 children and everyone of them was guessed correctly by the ultrasound tech, so don't worry so much. Relax and enjoy this wonderful time in your life!

I am a mom to a wonderful 4 year old little boy and a 7 month old little girl, with my son they were only about 70% sure that he was a boy (he moved during the ultrasound) and they were right. With my little girl they couldn't see because she had her knees up to her chin so they couldn't even make a guess but the dr. was about 90% sure she was a girl because of her heartbeat. So in my opinion between the heartbeat and the ultrasound if they say it's a boy they're probably right, especially if all 4 people in the room saw the same thing. Hope this has been helpful.

Congrats on the Baby! I was pregnant with twins...they weren't able tell me if they were identical or fraternal because of the positioning.....but, they showed me the little boy parts on both.....and what do you know..........Identical Twin Boys. I think the only time they are unsure is when the baby is position where they are unable to get a good look. Good Luck and I wish you the Best of Happiness it is truly a blessing.

Hi Chasity,

Overall the technicians are fairly accurate, because they do this often enough and can recognized the parts. But like you I will have my doubts. They are known to be wrong, so when I had my ultrasounds, my tech would always say that it was 95-99% sure what the sex was. Though the odds were in their favor, I still waited until the birth of the child to know for sure. So I bought neutral colors for the baby. It wasn't until the birth that my husband bought baby boys clothes. As for my baby shower I had it after the birth of my child so everyone knew what I had. It made it easy for everyone. There is no rule that says you have to have before. Plus everyone gets to woo over your treasure. Good Luck and happy parenting.

Ultrasound techs should never say for sure the sex of the baby. Most can say 99% however, they should leave some room for error, especially at the early stage of 19 months. It could very likely be a boy, however it could have been a misreading and you may find out in a couple months when you are closer to 6 months that it is indeed a girl. So don't get your hopes up yet. I would wait til around that 6 months time frame before having another ultrasound unless you need them medically and things should be much more defined at that point. I know I was 6 months and my tech put that stick on my baby and out spread the legs and you should see a front row seat that she was a girl, but even then she said I am 99% sure it is a girl, but I will not say for sure, because they can be held liable if their information is not correct. Just keep that in mind. I am sure whatever gender your little one is, you will treasure them completely. And even though blue is considered a "boy" color decorating in soft pastels can be for a boy or girl and if you are wanting to get some of that out of the way you would be fine sticking with non gender specifics. Congratulations, and good luck.

If you and everyone in the room are sure of what you saw i'd say your having a boy. With my first baby the doctor told me we were having a girl and pointed to what he was talking about but i couldn't see what he was talking about and he wasn't even sure his exact words were "it's a girl, i think". But in my opinion this doctor was pretty dumb. We were lucky though we have another ultrasound a few weeks later, because the doctor aren't suppose to do them, and it was clear that it was a boy.

My tech at my doctors office was correct when she said I was having a boy. My first ultra sound was done a little normal than usual, at about 15 weeks. Some of his other body parts had not grown big enough yet to see well enough, so I was schedule for a second one, and sure enough it was still a boy in there! I think the dr and techs are rarley wrong, but my mother in law did tell me of a friend of hers ultrasound showed a boy but the baby came out to be a girl. They went back and looked at the ultrasound pics and it ended up being her hand between her legs with her thumb up! BUt it sounds like your dr knows what shes doing..i wouldnt doubt it. You can always get another one futher down the road. Congrats and good luck!

When I was pregnant with my daughter the tech told me that I was having a girl and she was positive that it was a girl, I have a nice pic of the 2 parallal lines. But my cousin with her first they told her she was having a girl and she kept asking for another ultrasound to be sure because she didn't think it was a girl, but they wouldn't give her another, so imagine her supprise when she had all pink and had a little boy. But that is the only case I know of where they were wrong.

Boys are easier to be definate about. I was lucky. With both my babies, the tech. was right. I prepared for the sex they told me I was having but didn't turn myself against the idea of them being wrong. If she could point out the boy parts, I'd say celebrate with a nice blue party. You're gonna be a mommy!
