Is there any negative ramifications to cutting an infants hair before 12 months of age?
I would like to know the same thing also,my mother told me not to
and she was old school , but never told me why.

Nope, feel free. You might find it easier if she/he is asleep as wiggly kids are hard to cut where you want to. Also, use rounded tipped scissors if he/she is awake. Injuring the wiggly child is the only downside. At 13, 14, and many other months, you will have the same problem.
Some cultures argue against cutting baby's nails as well. There is no damage to the sight of the baby from cutting the nails and a lot of scratching of corneas from long nails which can damage the eyes. So hair cuts and nail cutting are both OK, and nail cutting is a really good idea.

I think that is an old wives tale. Cut that baby's hair if you need to. i sure cut mine when it started looking all ratty.

it makes their hair grow in thick my nephews dad cut his at 3 mths old now it's so thick it has to stay buzzed we were livid when he did that he's now 12 yrs old
I have never heard of anything like that. I think that if a child's hair is long enough to constitute cutting, then do it. Knowing what I know about hair, it wouldn't make any sense that there would be any negative consequences to cutting hair at an early age. Personally, all of my children are bald until they are about 18 months old, however, I do know of people who have children who are born with long hair. I say, if you think it needs cutting, then do it, but be careful if they are really young and may move alot when you are trying to cut it.

None that I know of. I did have my mother criticize me about it though.
My hair was cut after I was born because I had very little, according to my mother. It was cut to "help" it grow, but pictures show that I to this day have very thin hair. Hair is hair and genetics are the major role player.
certainly not my oldest boy had to have his cut at 4 months cause it was ridiculous my second I gave him a cut that just evened him out so he did not look so crooked. Some people just choose not to cut th eir kchildrens hair cause they think it is cute to let it grow... it is your own personal desicion
No, my son had so much hair at his birth in Jan. That by Easter I had to give him his first hair cut.
Just don't buzz cut or "shave" them. Their hair will grow back straight and prickly. Just trim the ends!

If you have a baby with CUrls just be CAREFUL!!! My daughter was really needing a haircut for a LONG time and when she was 2 I finally convinced my mom in law to trim it!! She warned me that we could lose the curl and we did!!

Our son had long sideburns and a mullet by the time he turned 9 months but in the back, he looked like a balding old man with a combover. Though it was emotional for me to get his hair cut, he did a great job and it just gave him such a nice clean look. Just be prepared that once the curly wisps are gone, he will look more like a toddler. Which turns out is okay with me.
Lots of other cultures feel that shaving (buzz cuts) encourages their hair to grow back faster and fuller. My husband's hispanic so when we took our daughter to Mexico to meet the family they all asked when we were shaving her hair and getting her ears pierced.
No, nothing will happen. Some babies are born practically needing a hair cut. Most Hispanic babies are born with a full head of hair and have to have it cut within a few months of birth.
Well, my little boy was about 10 or 11 months old, I think. He cried a little at first but we talked to him and the barber was patient and got the job done. Our son looked really cute and the next visit went fine, no tears. He is 50 now and suffered no long term effects, never told me he hated it ........ or me.............. smile. I had gone to school with a little boy back in the 1930s whose hair was not cut until he was six years old. Now, that was traumatic!
Do you have a meddleing mother or mother-in-law? IF THE KID NEEDS A HAIRCUT...CUT IT!!!. It's not going to affect his/her growth and/or development. Surely, you cut the baby's finger and toe nails.
Abaolutely not. If your baby is shaggy (as mine was getting), cut it. There is no "bad luck" or "ominous peril" that you baby will encounter from doing so as some Old Wive's Tails suggest. Besides, it will make the 1 year pictures look nice. Have fun with your baby and do what you think is best!!
