Question for Moms with Long Hair

Hey there Moms...Ever since getting pregnant over two years ago, my hair has grown a ton. I haven't cut it since I was pregnant with my 22 month old dd. Anyway, I was hoping to get some wisdom from other moms with long hair. Mine has NEVER been this long. I am occasionally having trouble with tangles. Driving my car gets annoying when my hair gets trapped behind my back. I love having long hair...and my SO really loves it. I wore it up in a ponytail today for the first time. I usually wear it tied back at the nape of my neck. Even up, my hair ends below the bra strap.
Bad thing is I have several people hinting that I should cut it. They are out of luck, but still it annoys me. I am trying to ignore it. Any and all tips for not letting long hair drive me nuts is appreciated. Thank you!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you soooo much for all of your responses. It is very appreciated! I do like my hair this long so I am not going to cut it off. I am thinking about letting grow to my bottom and then donate at least 10 inches to Locks of Love. I love that idea. I am going to go buy a bunch of clips, scrunchies, and ties in the next few days. I guess I found one of the subjects that people are really passionate about. For anyone that was wondering, I am turning 40 soon, but still look in my early thirties. I am also planning on getting it trimmed as well. I think it looks good on me. Thanks again for all your suggestions and help. <3

If you want it "flowing" most of the time and only need an occasional fix, try a hair claw. I wear one "as needed" or "all day" depending on my needs. You can find them anywhere too! (ie. Beauty Supply Stores, Target, Walmart, etc.)

You have to trim it regularly to keep it healthy-looking and keep it from tangling. I have long hair and love it too, but others can see it from the back, you can't. If you have split ends, fly-aways and breakages, it won't look very healthy, and you may need a trim. Who cares what everyone else thinks? You love it! That's all that counts!
I throw mine up in a tangled bun when it gets in the way.

Tell them you feel feminine with long hair. Usually it is people with extremely short haircuts that tell me to cut mine. They think short hair is professional or something. If it is clean, well kept and trimmed long hair is beautiful. Or versatile. I am in my fifties and my hair is very long. And anyone who wants to tell me to cut it usually gets an earful now. I will someday, but not because someone tells me to. Have fun with it. If they keep going you could get nasty and tell them to lose weight, work out, dye their hair, get their nails done, take a bath, etc. oh you know the drift...it is none of their business. Why should we have to apologize because we have a different opinion on what makes us feel good?

Wow-even WITH long hair that is a long time to go without a haircut. To be perfectly honest-your hair probably does not look as good as you think it does. That is probably why people are hinting to you to get it cut. You can still keep it long of course-just give it a little structure. Some long
face-framing layers will do wonders for long hair (think-Jennifer Anniston) This will make it easier to control also. And get it cut so it is AT your bra strap. Hair longer than that does not really flatter anyone.

I am adding to my post to comment on all the people who hate to hear that after a certain age you should not have long hair. While that is not true in ALL cases it is in most. As we age our face loses elasticity and this visually pulls it downward. Long hair surrounding this does not make one look younger-rather it makes us look older. Additionally, for long hair to look the best it should be in healthy condition. We lose some of that luster in our hair when we age as well-which makes the hair thin and scraggly looking. Truthfully, long hair really does look the best on young and goodlooking women. The best length for most women is around the shoulder. I wore my hair very long in the 20's and loved it. And what I wouldn't give to do that again. However I cannot fool myself into thinking that I would look good. When I turned 40 I tried again to take it past the shoulder but it really just dragged my face down. I think it is important for us to be realistic and honest with ourselves when it comes to this.

First, about those people who "hint".
HAH!! Hint.

If you feel up to it, you can tell them to stop hinting.
You can ask them to tell you, in so many words,
WHY they think you should cut your hair.

After you hear their reasons,
you can then respond directly to whatever they have said.
I don't want to cut it because . . . .
my SO really loves it,
I like how it looks and feels,
whatever works.
And THEN! VOILA!
NO MORE HINTS.
Ever.

They won't need to HINT because they will know
your mind, your intention regarding the length of your hair.
Isn't that great?

OK. Next . . .
perhaps while dd is napping
try various ways of twisting your hair up . . . .
you can hold it with clips or combs or pins,
or even with elegant chopsticks.

After experimenting with a few different ways,
if you find one or two you like,
try putting it up that way for your daily running around.
For comfort.
For keeping it off the back of your neck when you're driving, etc.

And then, at night, after dd is in bed,
down it comes for your SO to admire and play with.

Ahhhhhh . . . .

Braiding is always fun. I assume you are not really good at doing hair since you don't really do anything with yours. But, practice makes perfect. I miss my long hair but it's not the same luster that it was when I was young so it looks better short on me. I used to braid my hair many different ways. Parted down the middle, french braids, and in a ponytail then, braided.
I would ask people why they think you should cut it. Are you complaining about the hair to them so they say cut it, or are they thinking it doesn't look good on you? Or, are they just jealous? Next time someone say that to you, ask them point blank, "why?" Be assertive. They obviously are asserting their own opinion.

I'm a stylist who loves long hair and has long hair myself. I see it's been a while since you've had a trim. I would recommend trimming it to bring the length to a full, pretty and healthy length. It will greatly improve the texture, tangles and overall beauty of your long hair. I'm not saying to chop it off, there is a large difference between getting it cut and getting it trimmed... but often times hair that long that goes without maintenance trims grows into a scraggly v shape in the back that greatly contributes to those things you mentioned. When the last foot of your hair is thinning due to natural breakage and split ends, it's time to trim. Hair will often look and feel longer and fuller and behave better with a small trim to even it out. Every 6-8 weeks is the recommended time to trim to keep your hair growing healthy and strong.

Also, my friend has lovely knee length hair. She often wears it clipped in a pretty bun or a long braid she wears over he shoulder in the front when she is driving and doing things like that so she doesn't get it tangled up in everything.

My hair is down past the middle of my back. Someone suggested long layers and I fully agree. Also, for me at least, when I start getting tangles, it is usually a good indication that it is time for a trim(not a cut, just a little off the ends) A few years back, my husband talked me into getting it cut-we both lived to regret it, and I made certain that he especially did every time I had a bad hair day! Ignore those people. Granted, my kids pull it alot, and everything else, but I love it, my husband does too, so it is nobody's business except you and your So's business, too. I spend a lot of time wearing mine up during the daytime, but when the kids are in bed there is nothing as nice as letting down a full head of long hair!

I love my long hair!!! It is almost to my waist. I get it trimmed every 8 weeks. Everyone thinks it is beautiful, except my hair stylist (who keeps cutting it shorter and shorter at every visit-she is one who thinks "older" women need to have short hair.) And my mother who thinks she knows it all and is jealous!

My hair got stuck in the leaf blower (DO NOT LAUGH) and I had to almost cut it-but was able to untangle it-just picture me calling 911 and them hanging up on me becuase they thought it was a prank. It has got stuck in my shop vac and the copy machine at work "cooked it" when I was trying to un-jam the stupid thing. Also the car door is another favorite spot.

I wash and condition every day, I use tresemme or pentene and then use a frizz serum. That’s it. I really need to dye it as my children seem to be giving me more gray hair, but will have to wait after I cut it.

I leave a small amount of leave in conditioner on my hair so it doesn't tangle as bad. I always carry a pocket hairbrush around with me. I twist my hair up as needed using a claw. Or you can carry a hair tie with you and tie it back. Honestly though if I am just driving I twist my hair and move it to the side. Unless I have the windows open it stays in that direction.
On me, once my hair gets super long, it looks bad. Stringy, limp, no volume, no wave, and I can't do anything with it. So I found that I cut it to a medium length (right below my shoulders) and let it grow to my butt then chop it off again (with only trims in between). Bonus is, I donate my hair everytime. =) you'll get used to your long hair, and only YOU will know when its time for a trim/cut, not the "hinter's". =)

I have had long hair for as long as I can remember. I let it grow to my waist, only getting it trimmed 1-2 times a year. When it starts to interfere with using the toilet I know it is long enough to cut off 10-12 inches to donate to Locks of Love. Long after I had my last child I took prenatal vitamins which helped my hair grow fast and healthy. I shampoo / condition it daily with Graham Webb Ice Caps (controls static in the winter) and that's it. Usually the less products, blow drying, curling you do the less maintenance you need (deep conditioning, etc). Keep ponytail holders, scrunchies, clips, etc. all over - at your work, in cars, purse, diaper bag, every room of the house, etc. I have a scrunchie on my wrist almost all the time so I can finger comb my hair and put it in a messy bun.

I have really long hair and have a 2 1/2 year old and a 1 year old. My mother had four children and STILL has long hair and I have several friends with lots of kids that have long hair. One friend in particular has 5 children and hair that goes to her bottom. If I am working around the house I put my hair in a braid or a bun. When I am driving in the car and have my hair down I just throw it over one, or both, shoulders so it doesn't get caught behind me. Other times if I am just going out to grocery shop and don't need to look all dressed up and don't want to deal with my hair getting in the way, I will braid it or put it into a ponytail. Long hair is fairly manageable once you get use to it. I've only cut my hair shoulder length once and that was when I was about 8 or 9 years old. Be sure to get a regular trimming on the bottom to get rid of split ends though. I see so many women with long hair not doing that and then their hair starts looking very thin, unhealthy, and straggly. Don't let other people influence you to cut your hair just because the rest of the world has short hair. Most men LOVE long hair if you keep it maintained. Blessings.

when you get "older" and your hair is past your bra and all one length with no style, you are not doing yourself any favors by keeping it that way. You can have long hair and still look good. You would be amazed at how much better you hair would feel and look if you just took it up to your armpit. put in some long layers. When I read your post, the first thing I pictured in my head was a "frumpy" mom who doesn't care about herself. Hair grows back. Do yourself a favor and go get a good cut!

I don't know why so many people think once someone is a mom or hits a certain age it means that they should have short hair. Mine is long and I love it when it reaches my butt I will cut 10 inches and donate and then grow it again.
I keep a clip in my car so that I can put up while driving, I also keep one on my bag so that if the boys and I make an unplanned stop at the park I can put it up helps it not to tangle. I put it in a braid to sleep which helps it not to tangle at night and I use a small amount of leave in conditioner I also rarely blow dry it, curl it or straighten it. I get it colored every so often and my hairdresser is quite impressed how healthy my hair is. :)
I say good for you for having long hair and those that tell you to cut it are just jealous.

I guess I qualify - my hair is between my waist and the bra strap, cloer to the waist... I do wear a lot of pony tails, or pull it out the back of a baseball cap.

My hair likes to get caught in the seat belt strap - ugh! Only of course in other peoples cars... When I am driving the tail (or just my hair if it is not up) is usually over my shoulder in front of me. It is habit now to move it out of the way so it does not get cauth behid my back or anywhere else.

As far as tangles, a leave in spray conditioner is a must for me now that the weather is colder. Also, if you have not had it done, go for a trim to clean up the split ends, I find that that also helps reduce tangles.

Don't listent to the people who tell you to cut it. If you like and your SO likes it then leave it alone. I had a bunch of people (including my hairdresser) after me to cut it. I decide I would, but have not been able to decide how I want it cut. My Dad finally said to me - if you have taken 3 months and still can't find a hair style, then you really don't want to cut it... He was right, I really like it long and so does my husband. No one else really matters!

Enjoy your hair!

I used to have long hair - don't anymore but not becuase any told me to. I did it because the long hair made my face look longer and the short hair is just easier to take care of.

The only thing I can say about long hair is that it looks much better when the bottom is even and trimmed nicely. It appears healthier and more lush when the bottom is evenly trimmed. Other than that - it's your head, your hair.

Leaving it loose most of the time will give it the chance to tangle up.
To keep long hair looking good, you need to avoid doing anything that will damage it (break it, split it, tangle it, etc).
I avoid heating my hair (blow dryer only occasionally with cold air, no curling irons). You have to snip split ends or the damage will travel up the length of the hair shaft. Every so often sit in a sunny spot, look for split ends and snip them one at a time.
Wear it in a loose braid when you sleep.
Up dos will help during the day. So will braids. A French braid, under braid all look very nice and are fairly easy to do. Hair sticks can help you keep your hair together in a bun or chignon.
My favorite hair toys right now are African Butterfly clips.
I can roll/twist my hair up and hold it in place in minutes, have it last all day and looking great in no time at all and these clips are easy and very versatile. At fairs you'll see people selling them for $25-$30 apiece, but you can find them for $15 ($10 on a sale) on the internet or eBay.

Mine is "considered" long, but it is only to my bra strap. I am growing it out again. Is your 22 mo obsessed with it yet? For my son, my hair is a security blanket. One of his teachers mentioned that when she gave him a hug that he played with her hair. She thought it was so sweet when I explained it.

My hair is usually down, but I also use a clip and just bunch it on top of my head. When my son needs (he is 2.5 now), he will either come up and take off the clip or tell me that he wants to play with my hair. If you like the clip at the nape of your neck, you could braid it from the back, or do a french braid. The best thing I did was go to my hair dresser (I do get it trimmed every 6-8 weeks or so), and ask for suggestions. She gave me some great tips.

Another subtle hint - when long hair starts to get tangly, it is usually becuase the ends need trimmed. Nothing wrong with cutting a 1/2 inch just to get the dead ends off. It would make your hair feel and appear healthier. I have the same worry - letting my hair grow for the first time since my daughters were born four years ago - I went 10 months without a cut, and couldn't take the tangles any longer. An inch off helped...

Once upon a time, before becoming a mommy, I had hair down to my waist. Frequent trims and some long layers helped keep it looking nice. I would blow-dry on warm (not hot) and always stop before it's all the way dry. I used to use the John Frieda Frizz-ease to keep the fly-aways down. I also had some big curlers that I'd put my hair in and blow-dry it with them in place for a nice wave - it looked great and took hardly any time at all. A lot of the time I'd put it up in a slightly messy bun using a chopstick. You can do it high or at the nape of the neck in under a minute and look nice, plus you can usually take it down later and have a nice wave to your hair. I've had my hair short for awhile now, and I have to flat-iron it or it sticks out all over the place! I just decided to grow it out again - not THAT long though - so your post has me all excited about it!

I also say if you like it, forget what other people say. If you're curious though, ask a good friend. It may be that they see something you don't that you could "fix" but still keep your hair long - some layers or bangs for example.

I braid my hair to keep it from getting tangled when I sleep. It took a little while to get used to it, but it's worth it.

I agree with getting regular trims to keep it looking healthy and condition, condition, condition! That will also help with the tangles.

Another thing I do is blow it out and straighten it every 2 or 3 days. This also keeps it from getting too tangled.

You could try a french-type twist: gather all your hair in a bunch at the nape of your neck and start twisting. Once it's twisted enough so that it's trying to twist back on itself, pull the ends up and secure with a clip or some pins. I usually leave the bottom 4 inches of hair loose, and it falls back over the twist. It looks a lot nicer than a ponytail but really doesn't take much longer.

My hair is long, touches my bottom. I normally keep it up in a bun, knot, or U -shape or a ponytail in summer. Winter, I wear it down different ways: all down, curly, with a clip on each side etc. Driving: put in ponytail, bun, or to one side. However I do have it cut in layers on the side to allow for that beautiful bounce when curled; so you look awesome when you turn your head fast. My kids love my hair. My 16 yr old and my 22 month old daughters we sit and have hair brush sessions.

It's your hair, wear it how you want and work it!

My hair is past my booty and very straight. I keep a pair of clips on me at all times. I just roll it up on my hand over my head (more towards the center than the crown) and clip it on both sides. Also if you first wind up your hair in a strand before rolling and clipping it will not have those crimps that you can get from having it up if you have straight hair. I find that finding the right clips are a must since most clips can not handle the weight of long hair.
I LOVE the clips that have a gummy liner in them that really help to grip the hair and prevent slipping. Finding the ones that are right size are important too. Too big or too small will cause slippage too.
I've had long hair now for several years and as long as you have long hair someone ALWAYS wants you to cut it off. I think it's weird. Maybe jealous? I did cut it a few years ago just below my chest and hated it. I love my long hair whether it's in style or not ")
I could send you some pics on what I am talking about on how to clip it up if you want, just send me your email address.
Happy hair!
C.

And I forgot, I sleep with my hair down. No clips, braids nothing. It really doesn't bother me at all. I don't like doing a braid, makes me feel like I'm sleeping on a rope :) I do have to be careful climbing into bed and not get it caught under my knees and I pull it out of the way when getting out.

I have long hair, decided I wanted it long for a few more year until I got to that awkward, long hair isn't good anymore age...not sure when exactly that is.

Mine is naturally wavy, drying and straightening are no longer priorities with a 22 month old, unless it's for a special occasion or I get a moment at the gym to do so. I am a huge fan of the knot...I know that's all sloppy slumpadinka Mama, but I let it go curly, run my fingers through to avoid nasty tangles and put it in the loosey kind of bun most days-works great. Keeps the kiddo away from it and keeps it out of my face while I am busy.

Why are people hinting that you should have it cut? After my first LO, my hair was way past my bra strap and I usually wore it in a messy-style bun with the ends sticking out. I liked having the different options of being able to wear it down, all types of ponytails, pig tails, braids, clips, etc. I had my hair really short (almost as short as a pixie cut) thinking it would be less trouble...boy was I wrong! Long hair is so much easier to deal with and if you don't know already, you don't have to wash it every day. I wash my hair every couple of days and use a good conditioner. Keep ponytail holders in your purse, car, office, house, etc so that if you get annoyed, you can just pull it up out of your way =)

My friends try to get me to cut my hair because of my age. I refuse and get lots of compliments from guys.
I put my hair to one side while driving as it drives me crazy to have it pull while driving. It just takes a second and does not require a pony tail or anything.
To prevent tangles brush and put in a pony tail or bun at night. In the day you can leave it down, put it up whatever.
Don't let your friends talk you into cutting it if you like it!!!

I have hair down to my rear and it was about 3 inches above my waist before having kids (they are 10yrs and almost 3yrs now). I love my long hair, i trim it (myself) every 6-8 weeks to keep it looking nice. ill put it in a quick bun or pony tail. braids work nice too. it sometimes gets in the way but i have no desire to cut it even though many ppl so im too old for such long hair (im 31).

Longhair should be trimmed regularly. If it is getting tangles it is most likely dry on the ends especially since you say you haven't had it cut for so long. Maybe the hints are because when it is not trimmed it will look ratty. Do be sure and not wash it too often. As in not every day but maybe 2 times a week, and wash the roots well but only gently on the ends, then condition starting at the ends. Make sure the water isn't too hot.
Take all your hair at the base of your skull and twist really tight then clip the end in place. Any clip will do but I like long skinny ones that snap closed. I wear my hair like this a lot for driving. and when you take it out you have nice waves.
Use the best quality shampoo you can afford. And a leave in conditioner.
I have hair to just below my waist with very long layers in it and I have it cut regularly. I have been told many 100's of times that my hair is beautiful. So I guess I am doing something right.

Trim an inch or two.
The split ends at the bottom are what tangle together in most cases.

i had long hair (between waist and hips) the whole time i had littles. i loved it. french braids were my best friend. it was awesome to let my shimmering mane flow free, but for most of every day it was up in a barrette or braided for convenience's sake. of course, i think it looked pretty that way too.

It's your hair - wear it however you like it. Life is complicated enough without these arbitrary rules somebody created for women to live by! In my grandmother's day it was considered scandalous for a woman to 'bob' her hair. We think that's ridiculous - what will our granddaughters think? I think it's like having a favorite color, totally a matter of personal taste. Don't let people make you feel bad about what you like.

Hair is very personal, especially to women, and I think it is one of the most infuriating things when someone imposes their opinion about it. When I was in the hospital to give birth to my daughter, my wavy hair was almost to my waist and I had two nurses each tell me that I needed to cut my hair off now that I was having a baby. Are you kidding? They seemed to act like it was medically necessary to have short hair once you have a child. As a baby and toddler my daughter loved nestling into and under my hair, and adored petting it and running her tiny hands through it. She is 15 now and still enjoys playing in my hair. I keep my hair length just above my bra line now but I do keep it in a ponytail or clip most of the time. A deep conditioner once or twice a week helps keep the tangles under control, and I love the Pantene leave-in conditioner spray.

I personally don't look good in long hair (shape of my face and really really thick hair). However I love long hair on certain people. I admit though, when it is straggly and tangled looking.....not so attractive. But a nice trim and neatly brushed hair is so pretty on many women and young girls. When it isn't up and looks tangled or just a mess, that I don't care for.......but long hair that appears healthy and shiny is very pretty. I wouldn't let someone tell me to cut my hair. I keep mine shoulder length and when it gets longer my mom always says I need a cut. My husband would love it to be much longer. I go by what I like. Even my hairdresser said regardless of how I think it looks, my hair is way too thick to be long. All of my hairdressers over the years have said that. Why don't you ask a hairdressers opinion that you value. I've brought in pictures to hairdressers and they'll say "oh her hair is much thinner than yours, that will never work". It is your hair, your decision!

I would suggest looking into a really good conditioner, talk to your hair dresser, they know their products. An every other day washing and before bed brushing can help the ends. Not washing everyday and brushing your natural oils down to the ends can help. Depending on how you sleep, a flat braid at night can keep your hair from tangling too much. Also a trim might be in order, just taking off an inch from the bottom can make a difference. They'll also might suggest a way for you to have a cut style, some styles are still long but a certain cut shape can be added to frame your face or give you a little more body and bounce.

I would agree that it is still a good idea to keep it trimmed, to keep split ends under control. They can trim layers into it, which can make it look really cute and stylish without sacrificing a lot of length.

When my hair was longer, I used to wear it in a ponytail but only pull it through part way the second time around, so it sort of looked like a bun but with some strands and pieces sticking out.

I second getting a trim. Not a ton, just what's needed to keep it healthy. I had hair almost as long as yours. It had been probably 2 1/2 years since I cut it. Getting four inches cut off and getting just a bit of the bulk (which doesn't effect the length, at all.) really helped keep it manageable and tangle free. The problem with going so long between haircuts, is that split ends start breaking up the hair and making it really unhealthy. Taking the ends off, would help so much! Also, getting a really great de-tangler, or smoothing serum will help. I ended up cutting mine off, but only becuase I wanted a change!

So amny answers but I want to add one. I have waist length hair, blonde and wavy. Tangles can be tamed by brushing well morning and night. I also tuck mine up over the edge of my pillow so it is out of the way and it tends to keep a lot of knots out of it. I only trim mine once to 2 times a year when it gets itchy or really tangly. If you love it dont cut it. Unless you have very oily har washing every day can dry it out and cause tangles too. Give it a good moisture treatment every month or so and you should be good. Also I saw a lot of layers responses but would advise against them. While with some hair it can be good they can also make the problem worse. Especially do not let them undercut layers. Also I do not blow dry my hair. I love my hair and I am in my mid 30's. People compliment me all the time on whishing they could have hair like mine. One of my favorite things do do other than pulling it up in a clip is to go with two braids with a scrunchie in the back. It is a great casual day style that will give you lots of waves the next day.

I've had longer hair for 25+ years. I started growing it out when I was 8. I always have a scrunchie in my pocket for keeping my hair pulled back and out of my way. Otherwise it catches in sear belts, straps of the diaper bag and all kinds of things. I get mine trimmed a few times a year (my mom or my husband can easily do it since my hair is straight). I usually have it out of my face in a clip but braids are very practical for every day. It takes a bit of practice but learning to french braid is worth the trouble. Klutz makes a braids book that has easy to follow instructions. Amother easy but nice looking style is to make a slightly looser pony tail and flip the end of the hair over and through a space in the middle of the pony tail, just above the rubber band. It looks like you twisted your hair before putting it into the pony tail. Also, I sleep with my hair held in a loose bun secured by a scrunchie and I used to sleep with it in a braid for years before that.
