My husband is active army and he is deployed at the moment and we are stationed in Hawaii. His R&R is coming up and we are planning to have it in our hometown. Do any of you know where I can get CHEAP airline tickets for my toddler & I? Right now, it looks like it's going to cost us $1600 for a roundtrip :/

What can I do next?

Since you are considered O-CONUS, you should be able to fly- Space-A to the mainland....

Also check with the USO - sometimes they can help members..

First stop? Hickam AFB to check on Space-A flights and times....no, it won't be like a normal airport where you are supposed to leave at 1500 and land at a certain time...but Space-A was $10 a seat when I traveled it..

GOOD LUCK!!

We usually did SpaceA when we were active duty... but if you don't have time/patience to hang out in an airport for 1-2 days...

The Travel Specialist on base... I've gotten rates at 25% of what they go for to the public

Travel Agent off base... Again, ot as good as military travel, but decent at 50-75% of normal 'deal' fares (do your research ahead of time for the cheapest you can book for).

www.travelzoo.com they have a top20 which is pretty phenom

Double tickets. AKA say Hawaii to Seattle or San Fransisco, or LA, & then a "short" flight and then a deal fare from SEA or SFO or LAX to where you want to go. Different than "connecting flights", it means you can snag say 2 round trip tickets from LAX to NY (or wherever) for $100 each, and save $500 on using the same airline. Trick is to find cheapest to fly TO and cheapest to fly OUT of. AKA, LAX is almost always 'better' than SEA.

I always fly southwest, because they seem to be the cheapest.

Are there any military planes flying out? I don't know their policy on dependents but might be worthwhile to look into. And yea southwest, and delta seem to be the cheapest. Check expedia, kayak, orbitz for prices. See about flying to a nearby major airport and someone picking you up. See if it's cheaper to fly the day before, times, etc. Good luck and have fun :)

look into Space A flights, my SIL flew with her and her 4 kids for free military flights from japan. Just make sure you are ready to go when they call you cause it will be a "plane leaves in an hr " situation

I was watching Rachael Ray and she had a guest on that swore by Bing.com. I have not tries it yet, but this travel expert said that you can find the cheapest flights using their travel search engine. Also this guy said that
3 1/2 months out was the cheapest time to book flights. Hope this helps you!
