My son starts kindergarten in 2 weeks (and he is very excited, hehehe). We went today and purchased his supplies (yikes wasn't expecting it to be that much!). So since I am a newbie at the school thing, do we take all the supplies from the list and put it in his bag and he takes all of it the 1st day of school or is the supplies that stay home and we refill his bag as needed?

Just didn't know also if I just left everything in the plastic grocery bag and sent it in as well?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Put it together and send it to school with him. Most schools don't provide very little to no supplies for the kids/class anymore so ask the parents to provide it instead. I know I spend close to $50 on just desk and classroom supplies each year per kid!

On a similar note... you will probably need the same basics at home; pencils, crayons, ect. for any homework/practice work that gets sent home.

It depends on the teacher or school policy. I think they mostly do the thing where all the supplies go in one place so that children who cannot afford supplies can still have access to some. Also they are able to control the waste factor.

You send everything to school, and it is used for all the kids, not just your son. It is to stock the classroom.

Does your school have a "meet the teacher" day? We do, and it's always the Thursday before school starts. We bring our supplies then and drop everything off in the classroom. I usually label everything. First and Last name goes on things I know will go in her desk. Just last name goes on things that will be used in the classroom by all kids (clorox wipes, tissues, ziploc bags, etc.) Then I put it all back in the Target bags it came in. I think most teachers want ALL the supplies on that first day, but maybe that's just here. Since your son is a kindergartner it wouldn't be so weird to just call the front office and ask. Hope he has a great year!

Our school "pools" all the supplies together so everything belongs to the class, not individual kids. Yours may be different but I think that's commonly how it's done. You can always call a day or two before school starts and ask the office.

If you go to a meet and greet a few days before school starts, take it then. If not, send it all in on the first day.

For K, I sent my son with a pencil box with 2 pencils, an eraser, box of crayons, safety scissors all in his backpack. (Lunch box too!) He was given a folder for homework and papers coming home.
Throughout that year and the next two, he has turned mangling his pencil box supplies into an art form and I think I gave him 2 new pencils every...single....day last year. Sigh. Boys!

I would contact the school as different schools have different ways of handling things.
1. He may be provided with a cubby or a desk to keep his items in.
2. He may be required to bring them back and forth from home to school each day in a book bag.
3. Some of the supplies may be for school and others the teacher may want you to keep at home for homework.
4. All the supplies may be pooled together and kept in a central storage unit to be used as needed.

Does your school throw an open house before the start of school? Ours does and that allow us to bring some of the supplies to her room and put them in her desk. That way the first day of school doesn't involve carrying so much stuff!

I have worked in schools and am a mom. You can spread it out a little bit, not necessary to get tank to haul it in. But if you send some of these things right away, know that as kids run out, common things like empty notebooks, kleenex, erasers, etc. might be used for other children.

Our school does an open house before school starts and you can bring items then. I usually just bring my child to school the first day and drop off the items with him so he doesn't have to carry so much. He'll be in 2nd grade this year. Do you know who his teacher will be? Maybe you can contact that teacher and find out. They are very understanding and answer your questions when it's a kindergartner.

At my kids' school:
You take EVERYTHING that is on the supply list, to your child's classroom that first day of school.

Call your school, and ask them.
Office staff, is in school working.

The Teacher, has the classroom organized and per supplies.

For me, I WALK my kids to their classroom, meet the Teacher, and the Teachers has instructions on the board, as to where to put the supplies, and the desk where your child will sit.
They also then, later, have an Open House/meet greet the Teacher sort of thing.

Now, can your child, even carry ALL those supplies himself, to the classroom????
Does he know where to go?
Usually for Kindergarten, the parents walk their child to the classroom... and help get their school supplies placed, per the Teacher's directions.

REMEMBER: to LABEL all of his things, with a Sharpie, and even his shoes/clothing.

Schools here do the "pool" thing for most of the supplies. They only have a couple of things that stay "assigned" to the child. Maybe they'll have a meet-the-teacher type thing before school where you could take stuff in??

We have a back 2 school night to meet the new teacher & to put our school supplies in the desk or cubbie. He probably won't be able to manage a large bag of supplies I would fit what I can & take the rest in when your drop him off of school.I met my son on the first day of school he rides the bus & that could work to if he rides the bus.

I used to help set up the Kindergarten Tea every year, it was held a few days before school actually began, and gave the moms an opportunity to ask questions and the children to meet their teachers, each other and check out the classroom and playground. Have the supplies in your car and ask if you should bring them in now or wait until the first day. It seemed to me that the teachers welcomed them that day, since the first day of school can be somewhat chaotic and this would be one less thing to deal with.

Also don't be put off when everything is dumped into common bins for all the children to use, that seems to be the way it's done now ; )

It usually goes the first day with them, it is the basic stock for the classroom. Some items like the crayons, folders, notebooks the teacher asked us to put our child's name on so I know those are just for her but the rest of the stuff she said is to stock the classroom. Sometimes what you bring is just for your child but the teacher puts it in the kids bin. You may need to restock but the teacher will let you know if that is neccessary.

My daughter is starting kindergarten and the teacher said to bring it to registration/open house that is taking place a week and a half before school. That way the first day is less hectic with trying to get everything from the kids/parents. For carrying I put it in a cheap reusable grocery bag, easy for me to carry but all in one bag (barely).
