My daughter is 9.
I get the Garnier Fructis brand, leave in conditioner, for her.
It makes the hair conditioned, does not have a sticky/oily feel, makes the hair shiny and less tangles.
This brand has good products.
You can get it from any drugstore or grocery store.

Also, when drying her hair, don't RUB , just blot with a towel.
Also, keep her hair regularly trimmed, to get rid of split ends. Split ends make the hair appear drier.
Also, she does not have to wash her hair everyday. That makes the hair dry out.

I use conditioner on my kids, 2 and 4, and have been since they were over 1. I use the Suave stuff, it's cheap and works well. I sometimes will use my stuff on them, but usually not. I did just buy some Avon kids shampoo and conditioner and it's great too. My kids get a bath every other night and their hair still looks pretty good on day 2.

There are no immediate danger. However used often over long periods of time, certain ingredients may have implication of health (like reproductive health for instance). Other ingredients might pose allergy risk.
One main ingredients that almost all even kids shampoos have is sodium laureth sulfate (or SLS) which is prohibited in Europe to use in cosmetics at all, but not prohibited in US and so even the same brand might make a shampoo with this ingredient here but not use this ingredient in Europe.

The main thing is to know which ingredients are used in the shampoo/conditioner. There is a cosmetics database that has this information:
http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/

I use Nature's Gate shampoo & conditioner, the mint one.
I would also use others but would rather choose those with allergy risk ingredients than those with cancer and reproductive health risk ingredients.

I also use Marocannoil Light myself and on my 7 year old daughter, this adds shine :) I don't know thought how pure the ingredients there are.

I can't imagine trying to comb through the kids hair without conditioner being used while their hair was being washed. We have used it since they were one. Both boys and girls.

Any shampoo and conditioner is fine for kids. The only reason to use a baby shampoo is because you can't wash a baby's hair and them stay still. I taught the kids to look up while their hair is being washed and conditioned. They quickly learn that the water does not touch their face.

We have used Pantene, Finess, Ivory, Suave, Breck kids shampoo and conditioner with the monkey on the front, any regular shampoo and conditioner will be just fine. Normal hair if they do not have curly hair or some other condition that might require more intense moisture.

Huh. I've been using tear-free shampoo on my 2 year old, then the same conditioner I use on myself. She has never had any issues from it. I never even thought it could be an issue...

Everyone's answers are great for approaching the problem from the outside. Go for it, don't overspend!

Another point of view: Grandma always said, "you are what you eat!" Our hair, nail, and skin health reflects our diet. You could consult a nutritionist, too. Addressing diet is a long-term fix. Shampoos are short-term.

Many of us need more healthy fat in our diets (nuts, avocado, fish, olive oil, etc.) Low-fat diets are not healthy because they make you crave carbs, and be on a constant cycle of sugar highs and lows. Low fat doesn't mean no-fat.

Also, few of us really need to wash our hair every day- that dries out hair. Even in the summer, unless my hair really is dirty or sweaty, I'll just wet it down before bed to cool myself off. God created oil glands in our scalp for a reason--don't wash away all the oil and let them do their job.

I've always just used the same shampoo and conditioner on my son I use on myself... Until he wanted to change to s minty smelling one. Have at me boyo.

Seriously, though, if it's not safe for him... Why would I use it on myself? And vice versa.

Lots of people use tear free, or different kinds because of hair TYPE, allergy, or expense (adult salon shampoo & cond = $60, kids = $4). But safety concerns? Nope.

I do not see why not, there are pleanty of kids combo shampoo/conditioners to try. I would suggest sulfate free though.

Your daughter's hair loses its shine after it's dry? I think it's fine to use conditioner on it. You could also try putting Moroccan Oil on it. (Expensive, but it really works on my son's dry hair.)
