Question About Seeking "Temporary" Housing While Moving.

Hi Moms. Have any of you had to seek "temporary" housing moving from one house to another? We have a contract on our home but not sure if we will have a new home set up for us in time for our move out date in August. We don't want to rush the process and make sure we find a home that we will be happy with. We understand that this might leave us without a place to stay for a while. Staying with family is not an option for us. Can you rent for a short term lease? Like 3 to 6 months? Apartments? Houses? Hotels?
Any advice or help would be appreciated ")

Yes, there are apartments that will have different rates for leasing 3 months, 6 months, month-to-month, etc. The shorter the lease you sign, the more expensive per month.

If you search on places like Apartment Guide or Apartment Finder, their listings should mention the types of leases they offer.

My brother rented an apartment for 3 months when he moved back home from out of state. Then searched for a house to buy while he was there.

Moving twice is really going to be horrible. You can put your things in storage. Many cities have "executive suites." They are furnished, all bills paid apartments that companies will rent when sending an executive somewhere for a temporary stay. That way you don't have to hassle with turning on utilities, paying deposits, etc.

My husband and I had the exact same problem. We sold our house before our home was finished being built. We put all of our stuff in a POD so that we did not have to move twice and kept our clothes and essentials that we could not live without and stayed at a hotel. We stayed at the Extended Stay America. It worked out nicely they had a basic kitchen (No dishwasher or oven) but we made do. We lived there for 3 months and had our mail forwarded to a family members house.

Good luck!

Actually, the temporary is housing is the way to go! We have moved a lot and you can drive around an area, get the realtor's opinions, etc. but until you actually live in an area, you can't tell for sure if it's the right place for you. We've done it a couple times - rented a duplex(twice) or house. Many will let you rent month to month. However, if you need a 6 month lease, I'm sure that is negotiable. You can keep your stuff in a storage place, POD or in the garage, depending on how much stuff you have. When you are packing, instead of packing room-to-room, try to pack more in terms of short-term/long-term. Sure, it may be a little more inconvenient at times, but it's worth it in the long run to find the area and house you really want. If we were to ever move to a different area, again, I wouldn't do it without renting first!! Believe me, living/working/shopping/schooling in a place before committing will give you the real deal on it's compatability! Good luck!!

You can check on Craigslist. My sister has had good luck subletting her apartment for when she is gone for an extended period of time. One couple who sublet were looking to move to the area so they sublet her place for 6 weeks while looking for a home. Another couple sublet it while their house was being remodeled for about 2 months.

There are probably quite a few places that you could get a 6 month lease, but it will cost more than the 12 month rate usually. I haven't run across many places that do month to month without first having a certain number of months in contract, but truthfully I didn't rent for that long of a time, so I could be out of the loop. There are long term stay hotels that aren't terribly outrageous if you're only going to be there a few months, you could probably google some in your area.

You can rent anything that agrees to go on a month-by-month basis. Good luck!

We were in a similar situation. We were originally going to rent month to month apartments but we found someone subletting their apartment on Craigslist. We kept most of our stuff in storage and rented a P.O. box for our mail. It turned out better because we didn't have to pay deposit and all that. I would try to find something month to month because you never know when you're going to find "the one". Good luck!

Moving twice would not be an attractive idea to me, but I think you are smart to wait to find the right house. I think I would put most of my things in storage and rent a furnished apartment. I would check into places that do corporate "relos" and see if you can negotiate a lower rate. Good luck on your home search.

We did a short term lease at an apartment.

Our home sold before the home we were building was completed. We did not want to rush the builder so we put most everything in storage, moved into a small apartment for 3 months.

The apartment staff knew our situation from the start and worked well with us.

If it's going to be real short term, we stay in a residential hotel. If it's going to be longer we rent a month to month apartment... but keep the vast majority of our stuff (sans suitcases and a few toys) in boxes in storage.

Hi C.,

I am an Licensed Real Estate Agent that does Apartment Locating. Yes, you can rent an apartment with a short term lease. The monthly cost is much higher if you lease for 3 months than it is if you lease for at least 6 months. You just need to know how long you feel you will need temporary housing. If you would like help with your search, please email me a message at ____@____.com. I wish you the best. P. Howell/Plano Apartment Locators (I locate apartments in the entire Dallas metroplex)
