Question About Post Interview Etiquette

I just moved to a new town and have been frantically looking for a job for the past 2 months. I applied to a local video store, and called after a couple days. They told me that they had tried to call me for an interview, but that my cell # didn't go through( i checked the number with them and they had the right number), so we set up an interview for the following week (mar 13th). I went in for my interview and saw that they had set up open interviews for march 19th and was completely disheartened. I went in, had my interview, and they went through the whole thing of you're the most competent person we've talked to, easy to talk with, knowledgeable, etc. They said they couldn't offer positions because they had these open interviews and had to get through those before they started part 2 of employment which was the written test and after passing that you interview with their district manager. I'm just wondering if I should just wait for them to call me, or since they had trouble with my number supposedly if i should call them. I don't want to not get the job because they "couldn't get through." The open interviews were just yesterday so maybe i'm just in too much of a rush, but I'm getting desperate and not sure what to do. Any advice would be awesome! Thanks.

What can I do next?

I would call and let them know you are still interested in the position just in case there are "phone issues" again. :) Good luck with the job hunt!

Patience. Wait until Friday, then call (if you haven't heard anything).

I do hiring, and outside of errors on your resume, being too "needy" is also a red flag b/c I have to wonder if I'm handholding now, what happens when you have a bad day at work.

I'm NOT saying you are asking for handholding, but you run the risk of it appearing that way if you call too soon/too often. :)

btw - good luck!

I personally think a polite follow up email to the person you interviewed with, thanking them for the interview, and letting them know you'd like the opportunity to work with them, is a good idea.

I would not call yet. If anything wait a few days and then go ahead and call. Nothing wrong with it.

But line up other interviews too!

Good luck to you!!!

I would call them today if it's not too late. The squeeky wheel gets the grease!

I would check in on Friday if you haven't heard anything by then.
You have to remember that they have many applicants to sift through and the second step in the process to schedule.

Where I work, we take applications on Tuesdays and Thursdays by appointment only. We do not accept walk-ins. We have over 100 employees as it is and doing it any other way would be utter chaos. The second interview has to be scheduled with other department managers so there can be some juggling there. We run background checks on applicants we are seriously considering. That takes time. And, our orientation takes anywhere from 2 to 4 hours. We don't orient one person at a time, we do it in groups. Again, doing it any other way would be complete chaos.

My point is that scheduling all of this and preparing for hiring someone is much more complicated than it sounds.
There's nothing wrong with being eager to be hired and get to work, but coming off as desperate or pushy is counterproductive.
We weren't accepting applications one week because the HR manager was out of town and one woman got very indignant about having to wait until the following week to apply. She said, "This isn't going to work for me. I need a job by Saturday!"
We weren't accepting applications that week. Period.
There was no one there to interview her. Period.
There was no way to have a background check back and have her oriented by Saturday anyway. Period.
Her attitude did her no favors. Period.

I think you checking in on Friday would be fine.
Just keep in mind that they have to set up the next steps in the process and unfortunately, you might have to do things at their pace, not yours.
Continue applying for other things to take your mind off of the waiting. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Hang in there. Think positive.
I wish you the very best.

Being a manager, I would suggest waiting until Friday or Monday. If you haven't heard anything, that's pretty good timing to check in and let them know you are very interested. And I agree with another person that posted about sending an email "thank you for interviewing me, and I know that I could fulfill the duties of this job" sort of thing. It's polite and makes you stand out just a bit over the other applicants who just let it ride out. Best of luck to you!

I would wait till Monday at least. If you call the day after, you're sounding too "needy". They had other candidates to interview and then they have to decide who has potential to be hired. It takes time.

Wait one week & then call back, you could also e-mail after one week if you feel uncomfortable about the phone call. I have not been an owner but I have been a manager responsible for employment. My oldest DD is the HR Dept. & my youngest is a manager for her area @ State Farm's home office in IL they both agree (Yep! I just called!) the process (depending on how many days were set aside for open interviews) of going thru candidates should take about three working days & then the second round of the 'picked' candidates should begin within 7 working days, my DD's & I agree that after one week a call or e-mail is not a bad thing as long as you simply ask if they have reviewed your application & interview & let them know you are still interested in the position, say, 'Thank You' & hang up...THEN if you don't hear back within 14-30 days (depends on the size of the company & how many good candidates will be scheduled for the test, etc. & how soon they need to fill the position) it's not a happening thing. Good companies will contact you to tell you, 'sorry' if you have not been chosen.

Yes, you are in a rush but in this economy I SURELY do understand your desperation...

I sincerely hope you find something soon, don't give up!
