Hi moms!!
I am turning to you and mamasource to see if you can answer a question for me regarding an 18 month old that everytime someone picks her up her back pops/cracks. Is this normal? It has been happening since she was about 9 months old. She never cries or complains..... its almost like she doesn't notice it at all.
Has anyone out there ever had or heard of this issue before? Is this really an issue or are we being "worry warts"?
Any advice would be wonderful. Thanks to all in advance!

Call a local chiropractor. They are spine specialists and would be able to tell you what is safe and not safe. try www.silvafamilychiropractic.com. Or Dr. Fysh in San Jose who is a pediatric chiropractor.

It's very normal. Every baby is the same way. If someone picked you up by the armpits your back would probably crack to!

Karen Lewandowski at Om Chiropractic is AWESOME with children. It is possible that your baby could use an adjustment. I took my newborn in after a somewhat traumatic (really fast) birth and he has been a really happy mellow baby. It never hurts to check it out. Good luck!

I think it is normal. It's just gas being released from the joints with movement. If you're really worried, take her to a pediatric chiropractor.

My 16 month old's back does the same thing, not all the time, but often. I took him into my chiropractor and he said it's completely normal that babies backs will "self adjust" and they are like rubber at this age. It's healthy and normal and it probably feels kinda good. Have no fear! God Bless.

Don't worry my doctor and Chiropractor said the same thing babies will self adjust and when I pick them up if there backs crack do not worry unless your child crys. Both my girls backs do this.

Yes - my daughter's did the same thing and the doctor said it was ok. She's now 2.75 and it barely ever happens anymore. I'd mention it to your doctor at a check-up so he/she can at least feel the spine but otherwise, I think it's ok. Just kind of weird.

Hi C.,

The same thing happens with our son, who just turned 2yo. Not every time I pick him up, but often. I didn't remember to mention it to our doctor at his 2 year checkup. Let us know if you hear that it is something to be concerned about!

cHRIOPRACTER ACUTALLY RECOMEND THAT BABIES BE ADJUSTED DUE TO FALLS THEY HAVE SO THERE IS NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. WHEN I WENT TO CHRIOPRACTER TO GET ADJUSTED HE MENTIONED IT TO ME THAT CHILDRENS BACK CRACK A LOT EASIER THAN ADULTS AND I IS NORMAL AND RECOMENDED. I DOUBLE CHECK WITH THE DOCTOR AND HE SAID THAT AS LONG AS WE WERE OK WITH IT HE SAW NO HARM IN TAKING MY CHILD TO THE CHIROPRACTER. SO AS FAR AS THE BACK CRACKING THERE IS NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT.

Hi C.,

My son is now 28 months old and I recall a time when he was about that age that the same thing would happen. It was very occasional with my son, but he has a friend that is three weeks older and it would happen every time I picked her up at that time. I remember thinking it was weird with my son's friend, but it just went away with time.

Hi C.,

I am a wellness consultant and have been attending children's wellness expo's with doctors and nurses teaching the importance of a wellness environment. One of the therapists was addressing osteoporosis and high cholesterol in children as young as 2 years old.

I started giving my granddaughter wholefood supplements at 2 days old to support what she was not getting from her foods.

She also sleeps on a magnetic bed and drinks living water from a company that has been around 33 years. The company is Nikken and they have advanced technologies to help assist what is missing and being taken away from us from the environment.

If you would like to learn more go to www.nikken.com/ninamarie or email me and I will answer any questions you may have or find the answer for you.

Wishing you and your family wellness.

Have a blessed day.

Hi C.,

Our daughter is 13 months and same thing happens when I pick her up. Sometimes I can hear/feel her back crack. It isn't bothering her so I think it is OK. I don't think we need to be alarmed. I'll ask Doc if I think of it next time.

I don't have any advice, but the same thing happens with my 12-month old, and has been going on since she was 7-8 mos. It doesn't bother her either. I may mention it to the doc at our next appt., but I don't think it's a problem.

My daughters whole body does it. Her back, knees, shoulders, elbows. At first I was worried I was going to dislodge something, but the doctor said she looked fine.

I think the first time I felt it on her was as early as 2 months old. She's 19 months now, and every so often her back cracks, but it doesn't faze her... so I 'm sure it doesn't hurt either. Especially because she is so verbal, I would know if it hurt... she would let me know RIGHT away. Ha ha!

I wish my back cracked that easily! :-)

P.S. Make sure the doctor checks her hips. If those crack, it might not be a good sign. But only the doctor can check and diagnose that.
