Have any of you found a brilliant way to keep diaper trash from stinking? We have one of those "Diaper Champ" trash cans, but the smell eventually seeps through. Thanks for the tips!

What can I do next?

With my first I used the diaper genie, but it was a pain. So what I did with my second I put the wet diaper's in a bag and took to the front porch till I got a pile and with the real stinky ones they went directly to the big trash can outside.

I use the Arm and Hammer frig and freezer stick ons. they work pretty good, and you dont have the over powering smell of other air freshners.

I would love to see the response to this as well. I'm thinking of trying the new scent blocker trash bags to see if that helps.

Hi R.!
We have found a way to keep the diaper stench away! :) We have a diaper genie II and it's fantastic! It's easy to use and it really keeps the smell under control.
Good luck!
Oh! And congratulations on baby #2 any day now! :)

First of all, congratulations on the coming addition to your family! We have the diaper champ as well. We clean it once every two months with a baking soda and vinegar mixture. We also put three charcoal briquetts (the ones without the lighter fluid already in the) in the bottom and leave it in there before we put the bag in. We change these out monthly. Works like a charm!

We tried a couple different diaper pails when my kids were little and nothing really stops the smell, other than taking out the "trash"!

1/2 through my third, we ditched the special diaper trash cans and just made a point to take messy diapers out to the trash in the garage - after putting them in a plastic bag (like a bag the newspaper comes in). Nothing else really ever got the smell out.

Good luck!

My system is very meticulous... I walk stinky diapers out to the garbage pretty much right away. Not only will the smell eventually seep out of the diaper champ, but the plastic of the thing will eventually soak up the smell and then it will just always stink mildly. All we have his a TINY grabage can by the changing table that will hold about a days worth of diapers. We empty it daily and if we've got a real stinker on our hands, it goes straight out to the outside trash.

We just use an open trash can lined with grocery bags, and have some extra grocery bags. When a poopy diaper goes in, we just take all the diapers in the trash outside to the big trash can, and never have any issues with smell.

You might just try emptying the trash can more frequently.

Baking soda inside the trash might help as well.

I put some baby powder in the bottom of each new bag and it really helps absorb the scent!

We had great success with the Diaper Genie II and emptied it often, every 4 or so days. For those especially stinky diapers, we just took them straight out to the trash.
Best of luck!

Honestly, the only way to keep diapers from smelling up your house is to throw them away outside. There isn't a diaper bin on the market that can totally keep the smell away.

Used a diaper genie for my first two, never could get the stench out with anything....by the third, I figured a walk to the outside garbage to dispose of the diaper was a nice little getaway.

After scrubbing ours with bleach several times, only to have the stink come back immediately, we ditched it. I now keep any non-recycleable bags that we end up with(cereal, dirty produce ones, etc) and stick them in a wipes box to use for poopies. We stick those in the kitchen trash and take it out more often than we used to. I think diaper pails are helpful for the first year, but lose their value after the kid starts eating a lot of real food!

Toss the poopies in the trash can outside. :) I know of no miracle cure for this, other than getting the stench out of the house. I have a very sensitive nose, and thus this is what we always did. I keep extra plastic bags by the diaper area for just such occasions, and then hand carry them out.

Ugh I had the same issue... I cleaned with bleach and still the smell was there...
So instead of throwing it out, I got a huge air freshener to put in the bottom. It was a big round flat one I found at Target and it works so well! It is actually more of an odor absorber so the smell coming out isn't too fruity, but I for sure don't smell stinky diapers anymore! I have loaded up on these things and change them every few months! You just plop it in the bottom and then stick you bad in like normal.

Good luck!

R.,

Honestly I had a diaper genie thing with my first and swore the diapers stunk worse in that thing than if I just walked them to the garbage can once a day OUTSIDE! Yup, once a day get rid of those stinky things. It will give you a break from the kids, or from the husband (if you send him out) and is a great excuse to stretch your legs. I won't be buying another diaper contraption ever again!!

I keep my plastic grocery bags from the store (i know, not very green friendly, but hey there is a good reason!) and you can put one in the bottom, tie it off and then put the next one just above that and tie it off as well. This will keep some stench at bay for the day. That is how I take them out of my house.

Good luck!

I'm a nursery coord. and a nanny friend gave me the suggestion we use at work - we put a dryer sheet in a ziploc bag with the stinky diaper and trash goes out daily. My workers got too frustrated using the Diaper Genie and the Diaper Champ was just too stinky!
