Putting Away the Toy Room and Lego Land

Need some advice. My 8 yr old son has a wall to wall Lego City built in his toy room/spare bedroom but now that we have a second child on the way, he is having to get rid of the toy room and fit what he can into his bedroom. He keeps the entire city (farm, police station, fire station, construction site, garage, etc) built so that he can play with them like regular trucks and buildings so this isn't something that can be torn down and stored in a box...these are rather large buildings and vehicles. Need advice on how to keep his "city" up and running after the toy room is gone. These items will not fit on the floor of his bedroom along with other relocated toys and furniture.

What can I do next?

Can you build shelves up the wall of the bedroom? Have a vertical city instead of a horizontal one? When he gets older and no longer want the legoland, the shelves will still be useful for any number of toys and projects.

There are ideas on pintrest you can search for. The shelving idea sounds like a winner.

Would they fit on a train table if you got one of those?

My son has two Ikea bookshelves filled with Legos. They have 8 cubbie holes and stand up vertically (2 across , 4 down) They also hold a big Lego on the top . They are around $70 a piece. They are a godsend.

We also have an 8yo Lego fanatic in our home, and we don't have a toy room. Our son keeps all of his Lego creations on shelves in his room, but they are very crowded. There isn't room for him to play with them there, and he's getting more for Christmas, so it's going to be even more of a challenge storing all of them. He also has three huge drawers built into his bed where he stores some of them, and stores many extra pieces there, too.

Whenever he plays with the Lego creations (every day), he brings out whichever buildings/ships/cars, etc. that he wants to play with that day, and arranges them all over the living room. He'll spread them out everywhere. Then whenever he's finished playing, he carefully carries them back to the shelves in his room. It's not an ideal situation, but it works.

I hope you figure out something that works for you and makes your son happy, as well. Even though I get sick of seeing Legos everywhere, I love how creatively my son plays, and imagine you must share some of those feelings. :)
