Puffy Eye

I agree with the other response who said about the clogged tear duct. It is very common around that age. It helps if you massage the inside corner of the eye close to the nose, don't be alarmed if you see alot of mucus, if it's not better tomorrow and you don't think you can wait take her to the urgent care.

Try to put cold wash rags on the eye several times today to reduce the swelling. She could have a slight allergy to something, my son had puffy eyes when he was a few months old too and there was no reason they could figure out. When it got red and crusty one time, they prescribed drops but if it's not red at all, I wouldn't worry. If it gets worse take her obviously to urgent care but wouldn't go right nowand put her through that. Give it some time to calm down for a couple days. Just check the lid and see if there's a bug bite, it's the season for all that. Good luck today.

If you still want to talk to someone, call the maternity ward at the hospital and ask for a nurse. I called there so often when I couldn't get my doctor because of after hours. Explain it's the holiday, could they advise you, I'm sure they will.

Hi- our 18 week old had a swollen eye and it got a little gooky. The doctor said it was probably a blocked tear duct. The best way to help it is to massage the tear duct and we got some drops. It's kind of like pink eye but not contagious, or pink (go figure). Don't know if this helps but just a thought.

get a slightly warm washcloth and massage the inner eye lightly and the side of the nose. If it is a clogged duct you may have to do this several times a day. If the eye doesn't start to go down. Call your peds phone number, an answering service should be available. They will page the doctor on call(your actual physician may not be on call this weekend). Just ask if they have any suggestions and if it is safe to wait until Monday. If swelling continues to worsen, lips, tongue start show of swelling or you see a problem with breathing go to the ER or call 911.

Maybe it's a bug bite of some sort. Try some Benedryl. That usually clears any sort of thing like that up. If her eyeballs and lids seem fine it could be a stye (sp?) in her eye or a blocked tear duct. The corner of her eye would be puffy. If that's the case a warm washcloth applied a few times throughout the day will make the puffiness go away. Watch for any changes or increase in puffiness. If none occur than I wouldn't bother go to the urgent care center.

I know it's already afternoon, and maybe this has cleared up, but DON'T give Benadryl or really much of anything at all to a 19 month old without talking to your doctor!

Use the warm wash cloth her a few times a day - you may have to massage the eyes gently -use warm water to rinse take your finger from outer eye to in- VERY gently. Hopefully that will work.

Not sure if this is what it is, but it cant hurt to suggest. My best friends little girl (when she was a baby) had a puffy eye when she woke up. She called her doctor who suggested that the tear duct was maybe clogged. She told her to take a warm washcloth and try to clean it out, obviously very gently, but the warm water from the washcloth helped work it out. It worked. Maybe give that a try.
