noticed that she has what looks like pubic hair.I'm shocked!! Has anyone else
expereinced this and what did you do? I do have a MD appt.for her on Mon., it
was about something else, but it definetly will be about this now.
Thanks,
L.

So What Happened?

We just returned from the MD. She did not seem overly concerned, we are going to watch it. My child will return at the end of April for her 15 month apt. and we will recheck. She does have hair there, no question.
Thank you for all your concerns and responses, you made me feel better while waiting to go to the MD.
To answer some of your questions, no we don't use soy formula or milk. She is 13 months, she drinks whole milk and it's organic. I will watch the use of body lotions, I have used them, but will stop.

I have heard of it. It can be caused if you are using any kind of ointments that contain cortisones. Are you using anything other than normal diaper ointments?
I'd call doctor.

We just returned from a visit to a pediatric endocrinologist because my 18 month old daughter has breast tissue that has been slowly growing. One of the first questions the doctor asked me was whether or not I had noticed pubic hair. We have not but we are now on our way to have an x-ray of her hand to see if her bones are showing that she has aged more than what she is and then to have blood work to check for elevated hormone levels. At this early stage, the doctor thinks that this may be caused from either ovarian cysts or hormones released from the breakdown of the plastics in her bottles. Yikes! She did say that it is highly unlikely that this is anything serious which is reassuring. I know I feel better having this checked out. I would ask the doctor about a possible referral to a pediatric endocrinologist. Good luck.

First of all... Congrats on your daughter!

My daughter has the same thing and I totally freaked out about it when I saw it. On her it's short, fine blonde hairs on her mons and I was totally shocked to see it there. Unless it is coarse and long like an adult, I wouldnt worry too much about it. If you have a good ped, then she should be checking her out without a diaper anyway and would notice anything unusual. I'm sure the dr will tell you your baby is fine.

I wouldnt worry too much about it. The hair should fall out. I think these things happen from time to time. My daughter was born with her front tooth, it went back up my guess its along the same line. I hope all goes well with you and your family. I wouldnt worry though.

Hi L.,

I too agree with the others -- it is probably nothing to be worried about as it is normal to have some "fine" hair there and b/c she is from Ethiopia it is darker than Caucasian. Although if it is more coarse and thick, then there may be something to get checked. My only other piece of advice is -- since you cannot breast feed, and if you are not using Organic Formula, to switch to that immediately -- throw your other formula away. Reason being that the standard formulas are made with milk that comes from "hormone" injected cows, which could in the long run throw your baby's/child's hormones out of whack. But also you don't want to use soy -- as it too could send your baby's hormonal balance off causing her to begin puberty early http://www.westonaprice.org/soy/infant.html The very best alternative since you cannot nurse is raw milk, which would be difficult to come by in Michigan unless you join a co-op, otherwise go with Organic formula -- Similac has an Organic Formula. Let me know if you would like more information/links to articles on this topic = )

Has she been on soy formula? It has a chemical that mimics estrogen. I can send you the website that has a great article. Stop the soy immediately! Check out nogreaterjoy.org and search under the SOY ALERT.

How odd. Your baby is from a different country, so maybe it goes along with her ethnicity. Caucasian children have hair there too, it's just blonde and whispy so you don't notice it. Definately ask your Dr., but it could just be her ethnicity.

The early showing of pubic hair and breast tissue is normally equated with hormones. Whethere it's in her own body or it's being introduced to her. I'm assuming that because she's from Ethiopia that she is of color? Early puberty is on the rise in people of color. I just read an article to do with it. It talked about all the hormones (estrogen) that are introduced into a baby's body though cow's milk, baby lotions (the worst), shampoo's, creams, cheese. It could be nothing or it could be the sign that she has too many hormones in her body. Good Luck!!!!

Dear L. M.,

You did not make that clear; was the pubic hair attached and growing on your daughter, or was it loose as if it had fallen off of an adult?

Hi there L.~
Perhaps its just like the normal baby fuzz that most babies have, only darker because of her being Ethiopian? I really don't know, but I do know that sometimes kids have hormone imbalances that do strange things to them. I think you are definitely on the right path about having the doc check it out, if only to set your mind at ease!

We had the same thing with our daughter---her doc had perscribed an estrogen cream that we were applying there for a issue she had going on and that's when we noticed the white or fine light colored hair growing. When we were done with the cream it went away in a few weeks. On the other hand, if she has not had a surge of estrogen added to her body (via cream for example), I would consider taking her to a doctor. A student of mine had a medical reason for the hair growth which lead to a diagnosis that they were able to catch because the parents were concerned about the hair growth (in that case it was dark regular looking pubic hair). I would get that looked into when possible.
Good luck, we will be thinking of you.

I agree with Lacy. You know every part of everyones body has hair, but with some it is more noticable than others because of the color.
