PTA - Becoming More Active

Hi moms!

How does one become a member of the PTA? - in other words, who is the best person at the school to contact to collect info such as this? We are new to our school and I didn't want to bother the teachers if there is a better person to contact.

Also, any other suggestions for being involved with the kids' schools? I am a full time working mom, so I will have to choose my activities wisely on my vacation days!

What can I do next?

Call the school office, they can tell you how to contact the PTA, they probably have a website associated with the schools website.

Most of them have a small fee (we paid $5 for this year). The PTA president sent out a notice. We have monthly meetings to go over events and volunteer opportunities.

You can also contact your child's teacher or room mom and let them know as long as you are given advanced notice, you will help when you can.

Because I want to work more with literacy, I approached the school librarian with my name and number and she has already called me asking me to help restock books on a weekly basis and help with with the upcoming fall book fair.

Being involved can be so much fun, no matter how much time you can give!

Go to your school's website or PTA website. Our PTO meets once per month. Anyone can attend the meetings, this is the best way to get started. If you cannot attend the meetings, find out who is the Volunteer committee person/people and contact them.

If you cannot find this info online, find a mom with an older child and ask. Or ask your teacher or office personnel, the PTA or PTO is there to help the teachers. You won't be a bother!

A great way to be involved is to go to the classroom parties, they are a lot of fun and you get to know all the kiddos in class.

Best of luck :)

Just call the office and they'll give you the contact info for whoever is in charge of membership (usually the chair but sometimes someone else). Or check the school website to see if there is a PTA page. If your school's organization is part of the national PTA then there may be a $5 annual dues but you don't have to pay that to participate (although usually if you do register, you then get a $10 coupon for some place like Office Max so it pays for itself). If it's a PTO then there may not be any dues.

You can also check the school's website or distric's site to see if each school has a page there that often gives contact info for leadership personell including PTA/PTO and other volunteer commitees.

I would contact the school office and they can refer you to one of the PTA officers for additional information. The schools in our area have a "back to school" parent night about 4 to 6 weeks after school starts. At that time the PTA sets up a table encouraging you to join and sign up for any activities you may be interested in helping with.

You should contact the teacher and let her know your circumstances (work full-time), but you would like to help out.

Make sure you check your child's packback each day. Often notices are sent home asking for volunteers or advising you of activities happening in the school and in the classroom.
