PT Working Moms

I work at my girls school. I have a 12 year old and she stays at home. The youngest comes with me every other week to work because her Dad works 8 days on 6 days off. I have also worked at Starbucks. I am going back to school in the spring and my work schedule will change a bit. The best thing is to be honest when you apply and tell them you are available from 8:30-2 Monday thru Friday for instance and that you have kids you have to pick up from school.

I substitute teach and run my own catering business. With the first, I work when they are in school, with the second, I make my own hours.

Well, I work PT at the company where I worked FT for nearly 20 years....very flexible hours that allow me to go in after school starts and my husband is 99% home to meet the bus after school.
It's a rare thing though to have something this flexible.
I do advertising/marketing and website development on "special" projects, so I function pretty much as an island.

Substitute teaching is a great option. You have the same hours and only work when you want to.

I'm a freelance public relations writer. I can set my own hours (although during traditional business hours).

Grocery store. It's not fun but I work 5-10 or 6-11pm so I'm home all day.

I JUST got a part time job doing accounts receivable, admin, etc from 10am -2pm M-F. I found it on Craigslist last week & by Tuesday they had called me to tell me I got the job. Yes, I'm excited :-) It will allow me to drop DD off at school, pick her up, and still have weekends & evenings to participate in activities (if she chooses to). DH is off M-W, so it will really work out well during breaks & what not, she'll only have to go to the school's daycare for 2 days, 5 hours a day. I'll basically be covering our housing payment each month.

That being said, I had NO luck getting an evening part time job. I applied at multiple retail type places & nothing. Which is okay, because DH's new job sometimes has him at work until 7pm.

So, I say, try looking for a part time job in an office setting. I had a 100% easier time finding that type of job than any other.

I walk dogs and petsit. I usually can make my own hours and have the flexibility to bring my kids along if I need to. I bring in $400-600 extra a month and could do more if I wanted.

I started my own freelance editing business in 2005 editing books. I work for one e-publishing company as an editor, I proofread for a small publishing company, and I do freelance work on the side. I've been involved in writing and national writing groups since 1993, so I have quite a bit of experience in the fiction genre, which is what I edit. My BA is in History, Spanish, and German. Didn't get an English or Creative Writing degree, but I always got As in my English classes.

You have to like reading, writing, and have a very, very good grasp on the English language and grammar. It's a lot of work for not stellar pay. I do it because it pays me just enough to afford my being able to stay home with my daughter. I have noticed lately that it is becoming increasingly harder to find good companies to work for (freelancing) who will actually pay you decent money for your work. So if you get into freelance editing, you'll want to make sure you're very, very good at English. Because if you're not, you'll be dropped like a hot potato. And because of the less-than-stellar rate of pay, you gotta love what you do. You won't get rich off freelance editing. But if you love a good book and you love the English language, then it might be something you'd enjoy doing.

One more caveat: I've also noticed in the 6 years I've been doing this that most of the new people e-publishing and small companies have been hiring now have masters in Creative Writing and/or specific certification for proofreading or copy editing. This might be what companies are looking for now; I got grandfathered in, I think, and the fact that I can tear apart a novel and tell you internal and external conflict, the goals, motivations, and conflicts of the main characters, as well as the black moment and the three-tier development of the story, as well as watching that the characters remain true to form--on top of grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, verb agreement, etc.--is probably why I am still highly desired as an editor/proofreader.

I am looking for that same job :)

I work overnight (Sat and Sun night) in a hospital. It's great because the only time I really miss out with my kids is Sunday afternoon/evening when I sleep. This would be good during the week too if your kids are in school because you can catch up on sleep while they are at school. I have 3 kids under 4 at home, so don't have the time during the week/day to sleep. The hospital I work at also offers benefits at just 32 hours a pay period, so that helps out the most. We save over $500 a month just by me and the kids being on this insurance rather than my husbands companies insurance.

My youngest will be starting Kindergarten this year and I have to return to work, but, I don't want a career. All I ever wanted to do was be a homemaker and stay at home mom. So now that my kids are both going to be in school, I'm going to move on to my next love...cleaning. I love to clean. So I'm finding houses out there in my area that need someone to clean during the days. This gives me something to do during the day while my kids are in school and at the same time be available for them when their school day ends. I'm also continuing a passion of mine AND making money doing it.

I have a job that lets met work at home and set my own hours. It is nice and what your skills are will dictate where to look for such a job - I am a lawyer so I foud a legal editing job. My officer is 2000 miles from home so I don't even go in once in a while for meetings. It is all virtual. Good luck.

I work in the local school district. I start after my son goes to preschool, and he goes to daycare after preschool until I am done (about 3 hours).
