My son will be turning 1 in November and I plan on taking him for his 1st professional photos. I don't want to spend too much but I'd like to have 4 different poses.

I live near West Farms Mall. Which department stores have the best photo departments? And, what poses/outfits would you recommend?

Thanks in advance...I'm definitely a new mom!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all SO MUCH for all the suggestions. I took your advice and went early because if I waited all the Christmas pictures would be starting. I went to JC Penny and they did a terrific job. I felt a little guilty not getting professional pictures done before now so I booked one with JC Penny and one with Sears. We'll be going to Sears in a couple of weeks. We ended up getting a halloween picture, our Christmas cards, and many cute poses. Thank you all for your suggestions!!!

I always like J C Penny for pictures. I am not sure how their rates compare these days as it has been a long time since I've had any done there. However, they offer many backgrounds and do an excellent job. A few others I know of but I'm not sure how well their photos are include Sears and Olan Mills. Admittedly, Olan Mills has always seemed very pricey to me. Good luck!

We had my son's 1 year pictures taken at JCPenney, and I was really impressed with the quality. The photographer took probably 20 different poses, and they really give you a good variety to choose from. The website has coupons that are a great deal -- no sitting fee, free 8x10 and $3.99 per sheet/traditional poses.

The photographer will help you with the poses. As for the outfit -- I picked one out, and when I called to make the appointment, they asked me what he would be wearing, and they choose a complementary background. You can also see the backgrounds on their website and pick an outfit that goes with one you like.

hi L.,
I have a 2 year old boy. i have used Sears portraits for all his photos, they have been beautiful! try going in the morning or during the week, when it's not too busy & you'll get better service & the baby wont be as distracted.
i live about 2.5 miles from westfarms --- if you'd like to compare notes, give me a call: ###-###-#### (c).
good luck!

I HIGHLY recommend MotoPhoto in Avon on Rt. 44 (near the Bertucci's). They are AWESOME in there! Very talented photographers who do an AWESOME job with kids. Can't praise their work enough and the owner is awesome too... He's a friend of our family. Anyway, they did our family pictures twice so far, as well as pictures of my son when he was 5 or so months. What a great job they do at engaging the kids and at being creative with poses. Pictures turn out great, you get to see them right there as soon as you are done and choose what you want so the turn around time is great. They can even "fix up" stuff to make a perfect picture for you. They did one for us that was, like I said, AWESOME!

Best wishes,
S.

We have used both department store photography and places like The Picture People.

Recently we went a different route...
We were lucky enough to find Crista Acosta photography. She will take pictures in a location of your choice. And in a way that captures your child's personality.
Crista Acosta has blown us away with her talent. She is a mom, and has an amazing eye for photographing children.

Hi L.,

I beleive both JC Penney and Sears will give you good quality for a reasonable price. Look for coupons and be sure to read the fine print.

Some other advice - In the beginning of November photo studios are booking Christmas pictures. What this means is they will spend very little time with your child. You may want to consider scheduling an October sitting. Try going when the studio is likely to be slow. The more time they spend with your child, the more likely you are to get some great shots.

As far as outfits, keep it simple. I recomend one of your favorites.

Good luck.

I have had good and bad luck with JC Penny. With coupons they are really inexpensive. when I went on a Tuesday morning, they werent too busy and I loved the pictures. When we got XMas pictures done on a Saturday in November I was not happy at all with the experience.
I have heard good things about the Sears next to the mall. Most people love Portrait simple. It is more expensive, but they are only young once. I am going to go there for our next time we do pictures.

I am not familiar with West Farms but have advice re: outfit. I took my son, many years ago, for his one year photos. I thought I dressed him so cute. I look at the pictures now and, of course, the outfit is so outdated, it looks ridiculous. Keep outfit simple. Jeans never seem to go out of sytle! good luck and I'm sure they will come out beautiful!
