My daughter has been on the same formula part time birth to 3 months and full time since. She has never had a problem with it before. About 2 weeks ago she got a stomach flu. She had the flu for a bout a week and the dr.'s told us to give her no formula until she had no problems for 24 hours. After she reached that point, we began to give her formula bottles again. Now, she is back to her regular self except her formulaa gives her extremely loose bowel movements. I have friends that told me their children did this and they switched to whole milk and the problem was resolved. I do not want to take her off of formula till one year old because I know she needs the nutrients that it contains. Any ideas to help her little tummy to feek better would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What can I do next?

Either try her on Soy Formula or try a different brand. I agree with you about not switching to milk until a year old.

Try Lactose Free formula. Has all the nurtrients of regular formula and it's a easy transition to regular milk later. I tried this with my son, because he had a sensitive stomach as an infant due to his breathing treatments. I didn't want to use soy, sine i wanted him on regular milk after one and I didn't want any extra estrogen that soy has. He kept it down nicely and there were no problems going to milk later.

I know the stomach bug you are talking about. It made the rounds in our family. I had it myself and it took me several weeks before my tummy felt right. She will probably be fine on the formula after her tummy gets back to normal. I would think the whole milk may upset her even more. The advice on balancing the good bacteria in her tummy &/or lactose-free formula for a few weeks would be good for her. Call you dr's office to see what the nurse says. Good luck to you!

We offset the runs with feeding her things we new constipated her. Rice cereal and sweet potatoes worked for us and are still our 'go-to' when she has the runs. She is now on whole milk but we still give her a bottle with half formula half milk in the mornings and night just because it is a good source of stable nutrition.

I have forgotten the age at which you can start using this product, so ask your pediatrician first. But, my thought is that the bug may have messed up her stomach flora, so to speak. Any time my kids got a bug or were on antibiotics that gave them dia. I used this stuff called Lactinex which is essentially the good stuff in yogurt in granule form. They keep it in the refrigerator at the pharmacy but it is OTC. You might call around before you go searching for it though, because not all pharmacies carry it. You can mix it into yogurt or baby food. It gets my kids running regular in 24 hours. Good Luck.

L.,

The formulas have a lot of vitamins in them and so it may be irritating her since she is just getting done with the stomach bug. I would either add some yogurt to it or just go to the health food store and get some liquid acidolphus and give that to her everyday. This will help put the good bacteria back into her body and help her with the issues she is having.

Good Luck!

Hi L.,

I have almost 10 mo old twin boys & i have started them w/organic whole milk watered down. I had them at the Dr this week & she said as long as they were still growing that it was ok. my boys both like the whole milk. on some of their bottles, i add a scoop or so of their formula. so far, it's better. my littlest one doesn't spit-up as much on the milk. i'm trying to wean them so i'll continue little by little taking them off the synthetic stuff. hope this helps you. have a great weekend & Happy Valentines Day!

I would not suggest you go to milk until your dr says it's ok, normally after 1 year. You don't know how her tummy will react to milk either and if she isn't tolerant of it, it will cause bouts of diarrhea.

I'm not sure if you think she has diarrhea with the formula or if you think her stools are just a bit looser. You may need to get her some little tummies and let her have some foods which thicken up her stools like bananas, toast, pastas, etc...

If she was ok on the formula before the illness, I would not think it would cause issues after. As always, call your doctor/nurse for what they suggest.

:) GL!

I would defenitely ask your pedi before doing anything drastic. Maybe he/she would say it is okay to mix whole milk and formula together.. I don't know. I agree with you that I wouldn't want to switch over to whole milk completely at this age. What was she drinking while she wasn't taking formula?

I would check with your pediatrician. Maybe she needs to switch to a soy-based formula now? I definitely would not switch to milk until the one-year mark.

Blessings to you,

Hi there. The same thing happened with my son when he was about 10 months old. The doctor said that when a baby gets a stomach virus, the good bacteria in his or her digestive systems can be eroded, so I that should give him some yogurt to help build back up his good bacteria. He also said that the lactose in the formula could be contributing to the problem (loose stools) so I put him on lactose free milk for a while. Once he was back to normal, I put him back on the formula, but he had really loose bowel movements again. So I put him back on the lactose free milk and he hasn't had any problems. He can have real dairy in small doses - like on cereal, yogurt, ice cream, etc - but in big volumes (bottles) he can't take it. I'm confident that he will eventually grow out of it this intolerance. I know that you want to ensure that your daughter gets the extra nutrition she needs, but perhaps that will have to come from her food / other sources. Perhaps you should speak to your doctor to see what he/she recommends...

When my daughter had a stomach bug we were told that sometimes it can cause lactose intolerance for a little while afterwards. You might try a lactose-free version of whever formula you're using for a couple weeks or so, then gradually switch back.
