ok, I have just started learning about these... My 4yo takes them daily, and I ordered some for my 3.5 month old and he took it for a few days, but I stopped until I can find more info out about it.... Is it better for me to take a probiotic since I am nursing (I know my breastmilk has some, but take a pill) or give him a infant probiotic? What kind is good for nursing moms? and what is good for a baby?? Anyone give these to their infants or take while nursing??

What can I do next?

Yes your breast milk will have some but it will be diluted. I have been giving my LO (4.5 months old) a 1/16th of a teaspoon of the infant powder probiotics twice a day once a week since she was 3 months. I do this because anymore than that seems to upset her stomach and as with most things it might be different for each baby. I tried giving her the recommended 1/4 teaspoon but it was just too much for her little system.

As she gets bigger I will probably start adding another day of the same dosage.

Both are helpful. Your breastmilk contains probiotics anyway, but taking a supplement for yourself is helpful for you.

You should only take probiotics that are refrigerated...this is what keeps the cultures alive!

If your baby doesn't have tummy issues, then your breastmilk may be good enough. But probiotics can help their tummies. BioGaia is for babies and comes in drop form. You can also get a powdered supplement by Jarrow that you can add to the bottle.

For yourself, I would just look for one with a high amount of live cultures. If you have specific digestive issues, then look for one that addresses that. It will tell you on the bottle. If you're just looking for general help, then go with a general one with several strains.

If you go to Whole Foods (or a health food store) and read the different labels, I think you will see what would make sense of you...plus you can ask someone there to help since they should know about the different brands.

I don't thing your infant would need that now, unless he has had antibiotics. I use Shaklee's because it is guaranteed to have more live bacteria than any other.

BOTH!! You take it as well as give baby their own supplementation. Direct transference is impossible with vitamin supplements/medications/alcohol/etc and breastmilk nutrition.

You don't eat an orange then give a jolt of Vit C to the baby thru breastmilk... your body filters and processes everything FIRST. Probiotics are beneficial to everyone regardless of age.

I took a probiotic when I was nursing my daughter, it worked out fine. When she became old enough, I started to give her some that I found appropriate. I nursed till she was 4 so it was easier.
I really like the Now probiotic-10 and Natren's green line Healthy start system

Yes. You take the probiotic, and it will go to him through your milk. This is actually what our pediatrician recommended for us when I was asking about it.

Hi K.,
Your son will get enough from nursing if you take the probiotic. I recommend Florastor! I buy it from my Chiropractor, but the other day I found it at Wal-Mart!

I ended up not being able to nurse, but my friend's midwife said both was fine!

My guess is for you to take the probiotic, but do your research. Many probiotics on the market will not get "live" needed "stuff" to your gut......it will die in the bottle on the shelf in the store or on it's way through your intestine. You want to get it where it needs to be live.

I have always taken and given them to my kids. Nursing or not. I know too much of a good thing is not good. This one is hard to go over board on though. The only thing I was told was if they are given to much they can have a little bit of the runs. Small price to pay for great digestion. My kids really dont mind them. My middle one hates pills..chew-ables or not so I buy his in powder form and add it to a meal twice a day. I like the vegan Pro-B 8 it comes in a white bottle and has a blue lid(found at most vitamin stores or in the health food section in major food chains). It is 14 billion live cultures. I like it because it is not freeze dried after packaging. Which can cause the amount labeled to be actually lower in live cultures.
