Probiotics - Tyler, TX

My son went to the GI doctor yesterday for having diahrrea for 5 weeks. She thinks it might be linked to being on antibiotic 3 times since November. She believes his good to bad bacteria ratio's may be off, and she put him on probiotics twice a day for two weeks. Anyone used these or have any experience with them? Any side effects?

Thanks in advance.

So What Happened?

After going to the GI doctor last week, all of his test results came back normal. He has been on probiotics for a week and is totally back to normal. Thank you so much for all of your advice. It is truly appreciated.

Sounds like a great doctor, most don't think to do this and probiotics are wonderful. Our whole family takes them and no side effects at all so don't worry. :)

We've used them a couple of times. They are perfectly safe with no side effects.

They're safe and natural. You can buy them over the counter at a health food store.

Try yogurt with live cultures too.

Hi G., my baby's have been on Acidoliflus since they were 3weeks old. When they had episodes of diahearea I would open 2-3 capusles in their formula and it would stop right away.I keep them in the fridge all the time. When mf mother in law came to visit from Mexico she took it too in fact I sent some back with her so she did'nt have any problems on the way home. I love them ! You can buy them over the counter but once you open the bnottle you must keep them in the refrigerator.I get mine at Walgreens talk to the pharmacist if you need to God Bless you! S.

We use probiotics for both of our children at every meal. We have never had any bad side effects...just the good! It really makes a HUGE difference when they take them for a while and they have to be on antibiotics, they just don't get the diahrrea anymore! We have to get the kind without milk because my kids are allergic - it is a little bit more expensive but SO worth it!

Everyone essentially needs a probiotic. we are h*** o* our digestive tracts so the good bacteria suffers. My children have been on one since infancy. I have not noticed negative side effects at all. The refrigerated ones are stronger...there are powders (Life Start is the one I used) and chewable (I rotate between the different ones now). My kids get that everyday with some flaxseed oil. When on an antibiotic, I double the amount I give them, but not two hours before or after the antibiotic is given.

I've been giving my daughter a capsul of Culturelle in each morning bottle since she has been on antibiotics. I bought them at Wal-mart. She had diarrehea before I started the probiotic but it cleared it up instantly and we've had no other problems that antibiotics usually cause. She goes off the antibiotics today, but I plan on giving her the probiotic for a few more days. There have been no side effects.

I have used them when my daughter was on antibotics and the doctor said that it would help bring back the good bacteria. It seems to have helped and hopefully she will not get as sick, etc. We bought ours at Market Street, near the pharmacy, and they are cherry chewables you put in the fridge. Not very expensive, ask the pharmicist.

I use Florify with my son. You use one capsule a day and it will give you the daily source of Probiotics. Your system will actually digest the probiotics because of the fructose compounding. If you would like to learn more let me know. A 30 day supply is like $13or$14.

I was a total fan of probiotics- but I caution you to believe that they have no side effects. We have not done long term testing in this area. I used them religiously with my dd from 1-2 1/2 years- I recently read an article in a science journal that basically said "If it isn't broken, don't fix it" Saying not to add things that your body does naturally. Granted in this case the probiotics used were very, very strong grade. The general- acidophilus or primadophilus in a health food store should be fine. Take your doctors advice, your research & make an informed decision.

I agree with Nikie. Use probiotics when your child shows signs of diarrhea either due to antibiotics or even stomach bugs. I have used them on my son from time to time but never felt the need to supplement him on a daily basis. Once he is fine I would switch to more natural sources like Yogurt.

I use and my son uses them daily! (And my son is 3 and never had an antibiotic). And I put the powder in his yogurt daily. They are good even if you have not had antibiotics. They help boost your immune system as well and aid in numerous ways. I personalize use a recommendation made to me by someone working at Whole Foods. I don't recommend using anything "store" bought - -ie. synthetic. I recommend those recommended at either Sprouts/Whole Foods or Central Market if it is important to you.
All the best,
K.

You can get that just from drinking DanActive drinkable yogurts...also use the brat diet. (bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast) Hope it helps!
