I can always count on you mommies out there for child related questions, I though I'd try another type of question. I just bought my first house and it has a big plastic shed in the backyard. I opened it yesterday and noticed there were two pretty big honeycomb looking nests that I removed and trashed. I am assuming they were from last year. Is there anything that I can spray or use to PREVENT this from happening? I know I will need to be diligent about when I first see the nest and get rid of it, but I am really wanting to prevent it from happening at all. Any advice will be appreicated.

What can I do next?

we had to bring a pest control company to get rid of them last year. there were in hundreds. i guess the way they hm multiply is beyond explanation. we had just bought the house and we didn't know they had nests all over. he had to destroy and then spray all over a few times over the course of a few weeks. then we would see one here and there coming to see where their nests used to be. we were the only ones in the neighborhood that had this problem. very scary, i must say

We get one in a certain spot under our deck every year. We spray with Raid for hornets and wasps every time we see them start, and that usually keeps them away.

Wasps can not fly when it is cold outside. If you ever find an active nest and want to get rid of the bugs without using pesticide you can simply wake up early when the air is cold and knock the thing down. The wasps will walk around confused and later when it warms up they will fly away to find a new place to nest.
Don't try this when it is warm enough for them to fly, obviously, or they will sting you.

I don't think there is anyway to prevent them, but keep your eyes open and see if you can catch them when it's a small next instead of a huge one. Also, I would allow spiders to build webs in the area, which will help dissuade them. I hate those stinging things, but wasps in particular tend to leave you alone if you leave them. Often, you can catch a wasps-nest when it's small, and either spray it with water or pesticide to get rid of it. Hornets are very aggressive, and you should never deal with a hornets nest on your own. If you see one, call an exterminator.
