Prevacid Side effects...difficulty Sleeping and Anxiety?

Hello Moms~
My five year old daughter started taking Prevacid (25 mg. at bedtime) four weeks ago to help with stomach pain after eating. The pain has practically disappeared, but now she is having difficulty sleeping and increased anxiety (repetitive, worrying thoughts...separation). Chloe has always been a wonderful sleeper. The worrying was present before the Prevacid, but has definately intensified. Any similar experiences or thoughts on Prevacid?

What can I do next?

I have an 8 year old daughter who is taking prevacid....she has always been a worry wart as well, but I have not noticed any difference in her sleeping patterns or intensity in her anxiety. I give my daughter her prevacid in the morning before she eats breakfast. Maybe you might try that as well.

good luck

I give my kids barley grass or wheat grass (a small teaspoon in juice) when they have stomach pains....works wonders - in 5 or 10 minutes pain completely gone. Stomach pains are sometimes caused by not enough enzymes which is corrected by taking the barley or wheat grass which is like taking a whole bunch of green vegetables. I also take it when I have an upset stomach. You can buy it at any health store...

my son was on prevacid when he was 4 & did almost the same thing, the doc said unless he started talking about hurting himself or others not to be to concerned. after he stopped taking it he went back to himself within a week. the stomach pains came back and after they did an EGD they said he had ulcers and put him on nexium for a month so they could heal. he's much better now as far as his tummy is concerned.

Maybe Chloe's problem doesn't warrant prevacid. Side effects are usually worse than the problem in the first place and obviously you are experiencing that. Maybe her issue is simply digestion and can be remedied with nutrition. Does she take a GOOD multi-vitamin? (not the flinstone or gummy bear kind - one of the causes of upset in the stomach in children) My name is S. and I would be glad to share with you. My eamail is ____@____.com
Good Luck

Hi S.,
My daughter has been on prevacid since she was 8 months. She has never been a good sleeper either.
However, she is a much worse sleeper without the medicine as she gets horrible heartburn.

My Dr always recommended taking the prevacid in the MORNING, have you tried this? It's supposed to be best with an empty stomach.

I have looked for side effects on prevacid and never saw anxiety or not being able to sleep.

I have wanted to whean her off really badly but she gets so sick when I do.
I have her on a dairy free diet and lactose free.
I am hoping with these remedies I can get her off completely.

Is she on it for GERD?

I hope you are able to figure out what is making her sick so you can take her off the medicine.

That is my goal.

Hi S.! My son took Prevacid after stomach surgery about a year ago, and we had to take him off of it due to similar side effects. He was in daycare at the time and it became very apparent that his social skills were lacking and he was getting upset over the smallest things. His doctor suggested another medicine, which is a liquid form. I would definately speak to your doctor and see what other options you have, or go see a GI doctor who will specialize in this kind of medicines and practices!

Dear S., I teach Ayurveda which is a holistic preventative medicine from India that is 5,000 years old. Not knowing all of your daughters experience, I would suggest the following:

Feed your daughter 3 meals a day around the exact same time each day. Her food should be predominately cooked veggies and fruits with whole grains. Her food should be warm.

Once a day, as a snack, make a smoothie for your daughter of orange juice and Kefir. Kefir is a dairy product found in the organic section. It is full of probiotics and stimulates digestion.

At bedtime, give your little girl a bit of warm skim organic milk with a teaspoon of honey and nutmeg.

When your daughter awakens in the morning, have her drink a glass of room temperature water to start her day.

Routine is important. Commit to a few weeks of really sticking to this routine along with a bedtime routine. If she is suffering anxiety, try to make her environment less stimulating. Turn off the TV and music. Ride in silence in your car. Spend time in nature.

Her belly should get better within a week and her anxiety should disappear.

Good luck!!

I would definately talk to your child's doctor and pharmacist about these issues. This could be related to the medicine or could be a totally be something different. I would also reccomend looking into this medication by searching on the internet.

I have GERD and take twice daily. While I have altered my diet, I am still in need of meds.

Good luck to you and your precious little one.

(PLEASE DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES UNTIL TALKING TO YOUR PEDIATRICIAN FIRST!)

I can't tell you about the side effects, but I can suggest you talk to your doctor about changing the time she takes it. If she takes it everyday, maybe taking it in the morning might a difference. It's worth a shot.

Yes, it can have a whole set of side effects - anxiety, joint aches, tingling in hands/feet, Vitamin B12 absorption problems, etc.
I know for certain as I had these things happen when I took PPI's. (plus the med never treated the actual problem. The root of the problem needs to be found)
Look for the cause of her worrying along possible food sensitivies or allergies, watch what she eats and drinks before bedtime- nothing for 3 hours before bedtime except water (no soft drinks even during day) Are there playmates that are bothering her? New caretakers? New teacher? Don't just stop the med suddenly though - causes a horrible backlash of acid. You'd have to wean her off gradually. And of course, work with your doctor about this. Listen to your mother's instinct - I'm sure you'll figure out what is worrying her and causing her stomach pain. (I am assuming your doctor ruled out ulcer and other things like that) Good luck!

This must be a tough time for you. Meds have so many side effects, they may also magnifify existing problems such as worrying. I have had great succes using Chamomille (Organic) Tea. It is great at soothing the stomach, and helps in relaxing. It is caffeine free and does not have much of a taste. You might want to try making some for yourself and allow your daughter to have some with you, have a tea party before bedtime. If you would like to sweeten it, try agave nectar (it does not alter sugar levels). It is an old remedy, my mother used to mix it in my bottle when I was a baby for colic.

Have you considered things in the diet and possibly combinations that do set well with her and address if from that standpoint? I would stop it..IMMEDIATELY. You DON'T want her to be dependent on meds the rest of her life. Maybe she'll outgrow it...maybe not....but there ARE PLENTY of NATURAL remedies to help that without meds.

WHAT ARE WE FEEDING OUR KIDS by Jacobson & Maxwell, Encyclopediat of Natural Health & Healing for Children by Weber and Feed Me I'm Yours by Lansky

Even something as simple as a peppermint can aid in digestion and possibly decrease the pain. Need to find WHAT is the source of the pain and FIX it....don't mask it.

!!! a person needs their stomach acid to digest their food!!!! get some papaya enzymes they are chewable NATURAL digestive enzymes -always check the back label- they put animal digestive juices in some of the digestive enzymes-ick. just get plain old papaya enzymes they taste good and you can eat as many as you like cuz it's papaya. It AmaZes me how some doctors will put a child on any medicine! common sense! what's that? i saw that one mom said her child was on it and having the same problem and her doctor was going to keep the child on it unless the child started talking about killing itself!!!!! look into the ingredients in the food you are eating- the children's dad just bought bread from the Bakery at Whole Foods Market and one of the ingredients is thank God outlawed in food in other countries it is a thing used in Plastics manufacturing!!!! it is known to cause asthma! Plastic manufacturing! what!? azodicarbonamide in bread from the bakery from a store called WHOLE Foods Market. stupid is as stupid does. i called them and the manager had No idea- which i expected but i wanted him to know i will Not be trusting them for another second and that they have a responsibility to the people they sell food to...
DGL (degylerized licorice) rebuilds the tissue lining the stomach and throat if there has been ulcer. it comes chewable and flavored mint or chocolate mint.
Tahitian Noni juice(which another mom mentioned) is sold at The Good Earth in Broadripple and they are also online and will send you any of these things
http://www.good-earth.com/online-store.html
i am SO Glad to see so many moms who are responding are wise to the pharmaceutical industry AND the food industry.
yeah-chamomile, peppermint or even ginger tea with milk and sugar. milk is not bad homogenised and pasteurised milk is bad drink Whole milk from Traders Point Creamery in Zionsville, IN. (it's in all the stores around this area) It is not homogenised and they pasteurise to the lowest temp. allowed by law(stupid dumb law). Soy milk is not so great. It is FERMENTED soy that is healthful. the unfermented soy is Not so great for the health of women or men. Turbinadosugar is refined sugar- use sucanat- that is just dried cane juice-still has the naturally occurring vitamins/minerals.

might want to also buy some of Traders Point's drinkable yogurt to help replenish the intestinal flora. The flora can also be replenished with probiotic pills or granules they even make chewables.

try talking to your pharmacist about prilosec. It is usually taken in the morning so maybe that will help.or maybe you could lower her current dose so it helps with the stomach but not the anxiety.

I agree with Debbiesue's response, she needs to see someone else before continuing this medication. I am on prevacid and have been for 3 years, but that is for severe reflux and other genetic problems. I have never experienced any of the side effects your daughter is having. Keep in mind one of the side effects of Prevacid is stomach pains. Mine started when I was 6 with stomach problems but didn't turn into reflux and require medication until 26. I would take her to see a family practice doctor or internist over a peds. I would also request an ultrasound of her stomach, it will give them a better idea of what is going on, it may only be her anxiety causing the pain, in which case Prevacid isn't going to do anything.

Have you tried any of the homeopathic remedies for 'upset stomach'? I'm not sure exactly what problems your daughter is having with her stomach but I have had VERY bad heart burn for the past 4-5 years (I'm talking going through a BIG bottle of Tums in a month - month and a half). If your daughter likes yogurt try getting some Aloe Vera GEL (not the juice, gel mixes easier) and put 1-2Tbs. in a cup of yogurt. It dose have an odd taste but the yogurt covers it up. Also try Digestive Enzymes the best results I've had have been from a place called Alternative Health & Herbs Remedies (www.healthherbs.com). It's $18 for a bottle of 90 pills but think of what the prevacid costs. One last thing that I just started taking is something called AlkaFiz. I was having a really bad bout with indigestion and took the first tablet with in 2-3min I wasn't having any problems with my stomach.
Go to www.swansonvitamins.com and type in AlkaFizz.

A child of 5 should not be on medication like this first of all.Stomach pain after eating is not normal at all unless she is over eating.Take her to a internalist and have her checked out. Drugs don't make the problem go away they are only a temporary fix. Your baby girl needs to see a professional about her repetive behavior, they call it O.C.D and it is not a good thing.

Insomnia and anxiety are side effects of prevacid although they are very rare. My suggestion would be to ask her doctor to decrease the prevacid to 15mg per day. It may ease up the side effects. My drug guide states the dosage for a patient age 1-11years old is 15mg per day for children less than 30kg (about 60lb). Hopefully this is helpful. Also try having her take it in the morning on an empty stomach. Prevacid is made to take about 1/2 hour before meals.
