Depending on your financial situation, money is a traditional gift for a religious occassion. Many families start a savings account with baptism money and continue throughout their sacraments. I would suggest $50 for First Communion and $100 for Confirmation.

I am a recent Catholic but when my daughter had her First Communion 4 years ago no one gave her money. Her godmother gave her religious tokens - a nice rosary and a pretty prayer book. Other gifts included a beautiful bible, a bracelet with a cross and that sort of thing. We only invited immediate family to our gathering. And, I should note, the families involved (grandparents and godmother) are wealthy, so it wasn't a money issue. I think because the occasion is considered sacred a religious remembrance is more appropriate.

I treasure the silver picture frame that was given to our family by my son's godparents. It has his name and the date engraved on it and we took a photo of him with his godparents to put in the frame.

I gave my godson a photo frame so he could frama picture of he and his parents on that special day. My sister got him a tie tack and his other aunt got him a prayer book. I don't think that there is an absolute answer, you need to do what you are comfortable with.

I am Catholic, and my children haven't made their First Communions yet, but they have been Baptized. Deciding what to give as a gift for a religous occasion is difficult. I found it a bit strange that both my children were given outfits for Baptism gifts. My son received a beautiful Hummell Holy Water font from my sister, who is his Godmother. I think this would also be a nice Communion gift.
