My daughter is in preschool two mornings a week and i was wondering if it is customary here (I am from the UK) to give a gift to her teachers at Christmas? And if so, what kinds of gifts do people give?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone - that's really helpful. Can i ask another question whilst I'm at?! She also has a day next week when she needs to wear something pertaining to college and i'm unsure what would be suitable? Please excuse my ignorance! Any suggestions?!

Yes it is! I think gift cards are great...here is why:

When you get a gift card but it is to a place you don't like, you can re-gift it without having to buy another one for someone else, thereby saving them the money!!!

Don't write on it however. Then she can't re-gift it if she doesn't want it. I give my childrens teachers my Christmas Cookies, a lb of coffee beans from Starbucks and a $20.00 gift card. They have all seemed to appreciate it.

I'm answering your second question. I would put them in a T shirt or sweatshirt of a college. For example, I see you are in Chicago - maybe get them a University of Illinois or Northwestern shirt. Perhaps you've already gotten your kids something from your alma mater. My husband and I went to Dartmouth so needless to say our kids have plenty of green and white :)

How about a t shirt of your favriote college name on it or college football team. A white t-shirt from craft store and puffy paint to decorate it. Make it simple and playful for a preschooler.

Yes, it's always nice to give a gift to teachers. Teachers love gift cards! Cards to a teaching store, Starbucks, gas cards, etc.

I gave gifts to my kids' pre k and kindergarten teachers. Later they made thngs or we got things like cocoa and teas. The other day, the radio djs were talking about a survey of teachers about gifts. The top gifts were stationary and gifts for the classroom.

Hi K.! I have a preschooler as well and used to teach in a preschool center. My suggestion would be a Scentsy warmer for teachers. The great thing about these warmers is that it is like a candle without the hazards of flames. They currently have a fabulous teacher warmer that is adorable! The wax is also cool to the touch with many different scent options. Definatly a head turning gift! You can check out the different options at jenessab.scentsy.us. Happy holidays!

Yes. I would suggest a gift card. If you don't feel like giving that, maybe make a homemade loaf of bread or cookies.

It seems that most people give a small gift to preschool teachers. At my daughter's preschool, one of the moms pooled our money together to get a big giftcard. We gave $10 ($5 for each teacher). I think about $10 should be the limit. Giftcards are great, because teachers are not paid much and can get what they really need or want. I also had my daughter make a card.

Yes. Typically, we do give gifts at Christmas to teachers even at the prescool level. My FAVORITE gift idea for teachers is the One Trip Tote (www.onetriptote.com). It's a unique and clever spin on carryalls. Great for teachers (and any busy mom) to load all the things they need to bring back and forth. Can also use sooooo many different ways... Pool, shopping, party carryall , trunk organizer, laundry, etc... I've given them as teacher and friend family gifts for the last 2 years. LOVE THEM!! Check it out!

Oh, no coffee cups! I am a teacher and we don't need any more cups, trinkets, or ornaments. A $5-$10 gift card is the perfect gift.

I think it depends... when I worked as a preschool teacher some of my parents would give holiday gifts others didn't. If you'd like to give something, I'd say go with something neutral like a hot cocoa gift basket. Or you could always have your child make their teacher a card or picture. I always liked (and still do) when I got something that the kids made. You can also find out if there is a "wish list" for the classroom, if they are in need of any supplies, and get something from the list; it's a gift but something that would benefit the entire class. I hope that helps!

You can give a gift to anyone, anytime here! Anyway, haven't looked at the others, but a good gift I got when I worked in a preschool was a coffee cup, pencils and candy inside it and once I got a gift certificate in this type of thing. You don't have to spend a lot of money and teacher will be very happy.
