J.G. asks from Virginia Beach, VA

My husband is determined to locate a preschool in the city of Virginia Beach that is free. I have contacted Head Start and searched Virginia Beach school district and everyone has advised me that the program is for children that are from broken homes or have a learning development issue. My daughter does not fall into that catagory but he stated friends at work advised him that VA Beach offers the service and if it was for children less fortunate then our daughter they would not have provided the information. So I am asking does anyone know what these people are talking about. My daughter turns 5 in December so we have another year of paying for her schooling so we are looking for an alternative solution. Thanks

What can I do next?

If VaBeach schools are anything like Suffolk schools, they may take a handful of children to be "roll model" children. I was approached by my older daughters elementry school about my 3 year old for next year. They have 3 class rooms and take 4 "roll model" chilren per class. So, you may want to ask the elementry school that your daughter will be going to about her being a "roll model" student for next years PK class. I hope this helps, good luck.

My daughter attended Early Discoveries which is run by the YMCA but is mainly for children from low income, single family homes or children that are at risk(developmental delays, etc.) Unfortunately I don't believe there are any free Preschools or very many affordable ones as I am currently pursuing my Masters in Early Childhood and that is a big subject of dicussion. The Rec Centers offer preschool for 3 and 4 year old for about 135 per week which I do believe is as cheap as you are going to get if you don't qualify for Early Discoveries or Head Start. If you want you can apply with the YMCA to receive a discounted rate if your family income is low enough. I'm not sure about this one but you can always try. Good luck with whatever road you may decide but Preschool is definitely the way to go but make sure the program is high quality as this is most important!

Actually head start is a wonderful program- and due in part to the fact that it accepts children who are struggling as well as those who are especially gifted- my neighboors 4 year old is doing head start this year and is neither from a broken home or has any learning diabilities- and he thinks he's going to kindergarden! The one they offer at Kingston is especially good! Pre school can be so expensive and it really is un nessecary if you have another option!

In Chesapeake they call it Reverse Mainstreaming. My 2 year old son was born 4 months early and has a delay. He is in preschool with 4 delayed children and 4 regular paced children. It's great. It's free for delayed children or at risk children. They asked if my 4 year son would want to participate. There would be a fee. I forget how much, but it was like what you would pay for a month somewhere else would cover the whole year. They should start taking applications soon. Good luck!
