every perscription for the prenatal vitamins have made me sick. I tell the doctor and they tell me to ethier stick it out or give me a new perscription. which make me sick to I stopped takeing the vitamins for my other two pregnancy. I've tried takeing them before meals but that dosent help. I have also tried takeing them after meals but that didnt work ethier. I also tried drinking ginger ale after the sickness first start but that dosent help ethier. I get the burps and every time I belch after takeing those pills it makes me sick to my stomach. which most times means I vomit up the pills . which I know is just as bad as not takeing them. I was thinking of just takeing the DHRA pills and not the prenatal vitamins. any moms have any ideas on how I can take my prenatal vitamins without my getting sick everytime. or thoughts about my takeing the DHRA pills and not the prenatals. I stopped takeing the prenatals with both my other two and they didnt offer the DHRA pills at the time and they both turned out just fine. and are two smart cookies. so I'm not to worried about not takeing them but would like to for the babies health.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

well I know take a flintstones vitamin every morning. It has folic acid in it already and stuff for brain development so I dont have to take any extra pills. I tried takeing the prenatals before falling asleep but I wake up so much at night to use the restroom that that didnt help. I would get sick anyway since I've been takeing the flintstones I havent been sick yet. and I've been takeing them at breakfast time. I'm just happy to be takeing something that will be benificial to my baby and dosent make me sick in the process . now I just cant wake for the morning sickness to go away since it strikes at all hrs of the day . ugh I've been drinking ginger ale and chewing lots of mint flavored bubble gum for that.

My doctor told me the flinstones were fine to take... two a day, but not the complete's. I would switch it up every month and get the ones w/ extra calcium then extra iron. I have a healthy, smart 9 month old son!

Try taking them right before you go to sleep. That may help. I had major morning sickness with my daughter and if i took them in the morning they just came right up so i took them at night.

Hi S.,
I am having the same problem! I was also sick w/my first but i unforunately stuck it out. This time around though seems to be worse. As for the vitamin situation, my OB/GYN told me to take 2 children's Flinstones vitamins a day until i'm able to take the regular one b/c at least this way, i'm getting some sort of vitamins. My friend who works for a different OB/GYN said they tell their patients the same thing. Well let me tell you, i haven't been sick (at least from the vitamins lol) and they taste pretty good! Good luck! Hope this helps!

Ask your OB about Flintstones with iron vitamins for kids. I took them while I was pregnant and I didn't get sick cause I had the same problem...I took two at a time because in comparison with regular prenatal vitamins two matches up to the vitamins you get from the prenatals. But like I suggest ask your OB before taking them.

I couldn't stomach prenatals either. My dr. told me to take Flintstones but I also couldn't handle those. I ended up taking vitaball which is a vitamin gumball. It has all the same stuff as the Flintstones with added folic acid. That worked for me.

I had a friend who couldn't tolerate the prenatal vitamins either. She took the Flintstones Complete Vitamins during her 3 pregnancies. Double check with your doctor before you switch, though. You will probably need another supplement or two with them. Good luck.

I had the same problem with my prenatals - I tried taking them before meals, after means, everything. Then my mom told me to take them at night right before I went to bed. That was the trick for me - worked like a charm. I didn't get sick. Hopefully if you haven't tried this you will and it will work for you. Good luck!

For me the only way I don't get sick is to take them at night before bed. But my ex sister in law had the same problem with prenatals like you that her Dr. told her to take Flinstone Vitamins. They worked for her, they might work for you. I don't know how much help this is but I tried. Good luck with everything!

I couldnt tolerate prenatal vitamins either, so my doctor told me to take 1 flintstones complete (make sure you get the ones that say COMPLETE) and a separate folic acid pill (they're really small). This worked great for me. My doctor said that especially the folic acid is important, so I'd at least try to take that if you can.

Good luck!

Same here!! I ended up taking Centrum Silver becasue it doesnt have the iron in it that makes me sick. I have never had problems with anemia so this wasn't a problem for me. Ask you doc if you can just switch to a multi-vitamin and take folic acid supplements also.

I went thru the same thing! My OB/GYN told me to take a regular multivitamin along with an additional folic acid tablet and some B-6. The folic acid is really important but that was what was making me nauseous all the time. The B-6 (over the counter) counter acted the folic acid. Give it a try.

Good Luck,

I just had my third child a month ago and was not taking pre-natal vitamins with her - simply because I never got in the habit of reminding myself everyday. Shame on me because I have been a Captain of the March of Dimes walked for the last 10 years but you know what...my daughter was born completely healthy. As long as you eat right, be sure to get a lot of folic acid and green veggies, your baby will be just fine.

I don't know if this will work for you, but give it a try. My vitamins made me feel a little nauseous, so I kept them on my bedside table and took them right before I fell asleep. It was important for me to take them right as I was feeling drowsy, so they wouldn't really begin dissolving before I was already out. I know you should take vitamins while you are awake and moving about, but I figured this was better than not taking them at all.

With both of my pregnancies I was ridiculously nauseous and vomiting all the time. I had 9 months of morning, noon and night sickness (which is one of the reasons that I only have two children). With my second child, I rarely kept anything down. I had to take water in tiny sips all day in order to stay hydrated, and if it weren't for Life cereal and bland, bland, bland chicken breasts, I wonder what I would have eaten. I gained only 12 pounds and gave birth to an 8 lb, 2 oz baby two weeks before my due date. Prenatal vitamins made my nausea worse, and I usually threw them up as soon as I got them down. You'd think I would have had a weak little child, but he was perfectly healthy.
If you can't keep the vitamins down, they aren't going to do you any good, anyway. So pay attention to your diet, perhaps take children's vitamins, if you can tolerate that, take care of yourself.

Hi S.,
I too got very sick from prenatal vitamins. I even tried natural ones from a vegetarian store. I was very very sick throughout my whole 7 months of pregnancy (had a preemie) My midwives told me to take 2 Flintstones complete vitamins every day. That worked fine for me. I do realize that they are most likely not as good as typical prenatal's but this advise came from my midwives that i trusted. Good luck!

I had the same problem, and it seems like everyone gave you the same advice. If taking them before you go to bed, doesn't work, or you don't want to be chewing flinstones. Try a brand of Prenatal over the counter vitamins called "rainbow light". They contain ginger, and raspberry which will make you feel better. I LOVED them, and was so relieved not to be sick anymore.
Good Luck.

Have you tried over the counter prenatal vitamins? That's what my cousin took when she had the same problem you had. You can go to any pharmacy and get thwm. I even took them when I was breastfeeding and didn't have insurance. They aren't very expensive. I used the wal-mart brand.

I always took my prenatals at night. My ob/gyn is the one who suggested it, so once I realized that they upset my stomach I tried that. It worked wonderfully. By the time I woke up in the morning I felt great. I did notice that if I woke in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, that I felt a little sick, but I was able to go back to sleep and sleep through the worst of it. My mom was always worried, because I wasn't taking it with food, but my doctor said it wasn't a problem, so I chose not to be sick and take them at night. I hope this helps you.

I couldn't keep prenatals down either, so instead I paid a LOT more attention to what I ate to make sure I got the necessary nutrition that prenatal vitamins would otherwise provide. I also supplemented my diet with pregnancy-related nutritional bars, such as the "Oh Mama" bar, which is actually pretty good.

If you can't keep the prenatals down, I'd ask your doctor or midwife for suggestions about how to get most of what you need from your diet. Yours may tell you the same thing my OB (before I switched to midwife care) told me: "People all over the world are having healthy babies without the benefit of prenatal vitamins, quality food, and purified water. Just don't smoke, drink, or take drugs, and yours will probably be fine."

He was right. My baby was perfectly healthy and seems to be ahead of the curve on most developmental milestones. Not taking the prenatal vitamins didn't seem to harm him in the least. (And I was 31 when he was born.)

Good luck--I hope your queasiness passes soon!

Maybe, I should not be telling you this, but the prenatal vitamins made me sick too. I told the doctors and they told me to stick it out (easy for them to say). I just could not handle it and I stopped taking them (with both of my girls). When the doctor asked, "are you taking your vitamins", I said yes. I did not want to hear a lecture. Any way, both of my girls are very bright and they did not have any problems. I'm not saying not to take them if you can handle them, but if you can't....
Good luck!

If you eat a really balanced diet, prenatal vitamins shouldn't be mandatory. With my first child, they made me sick too so I stopped taking them and just really tried to eat better. So far my daughter turned out fine. This time around, my midwives said gummy vitamins (the ones you give to kids) were fine too. I have no problems with those so I just take those.

I just took the Target over-the-counter vitamins when I didn't have time to go to Sonnewald's for my preferred brand. To buy a non-prescription vitamin I took a book with me and checked the rda's for each, watching that they had appropriate levels of A (not too much) and folic acid (enough)especially. I also followed a pregnancy diet, the name of which eludes me at the moment. I found the diet info in my Hypnobabies program and also visited a link from the Bradley Childbirth method website to this particular diet's site. It had nice printouts to be sure I was getting all the nutrients I needed each week. It also had info on protein grams in foods to be sure I was getting enough protein eating a primarily vegetarian diet... Okay, it's the Brewer's Diet. Here is the link, and there is a downloadable excel version available on that page. http://www.bradleybirth.com/PD.aspx

Be well!!! :-)
