Yeah it's me again. LOL! I have a question. Did anyone ever use over the counter prenatal vitamins or buy them from a website? I just called my pharmacy and they told me for a 90 day supply is will be $120.00. That is just to rich for my pocket! I had the same ones last year before my miscarrage and they were $30 or 90 day supply. I looked some up on some websites and for prenatal plus it is $16.95 for 120 pills. I was just curious as to whether any of you did this. Thanx

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanx so much for your help. I am def going to Target this weekend. This is the second prescription that my DR gave me and they are all so expensive! What the heck is going on? They are only vitamins not gold! LOL!! I just wanted to make sure that the OTC ones were just as good. Thanx again!!!

Hi. I couldn't take prenatals because they made me want to throw up, and my doctor suggested Flintstones (not kidding). You can buy a big container at BJ's, $10 for 200 vitamins. The only thing you really need is the folic acid and Flintstones have the required amount of that. Also, when I found out I was pregnant with the second, my doctor recommended some prenatal vitamin where there were two pills - one a regular pill and the other a substitute fish oil. They were very expensive. I ended up taking Flintstones and a fish oil supplement. Same thing for a fraction of the cost.

My prescriptions were very expensive too, and my OB told me to buy the One-A-Day prenatal vitamins over the counter instead. Exact same thing as the prescription, but the DHA pill is separate. They happened to be on sale at CVS when I bought them, so I saved a boatload!

pfhhh $120.00? are they made out of gold? LOL... I have terrible morning sickness and I needed vitamins that I could keep down so I got these: http://www.amazon.com/Vitafusion-Prenatal-Gummy-Vitamins-...

they are great... also, there are plenty of regular prenatal vitamins, and the generics are virtually identical to the "name brands"....

A good one should have fiber, folic acid, and DHA at least. Maybe your doctor has a certain brand they recommend? pair a good vitamin with a healthy, balanced diet and you'll be fine! For thousands of years women had healthy babies without prenatal vitamins at all- so don't think that you are "ruining" your unborn baby by not investing in gold encrusted vitamins! Instead put that money you would be spending on prenatal vitamins into eating healthy foods and getting important baby gear!

If you buy vitamins off the web, make sure to read reviews and buy from a reputable dealer. Make sure that you eat healthy until your "vites" come in the mail!

Good Luck and Congrats!

My doc gives me samples each time I go bc she knows I have no rx insurance. Try it-free samples are even cheaper than store-bought! lol

Yes! We had high deductible insurance when I became pregnant so the OB was fine with me taking the store brand over the counter Prenatals. She just gave me the few particular amounts to look for on the label.

I used over the counter vitamins with both my pregnancies. CVS brand to be exact. When I found out I was pregnant with my daughter (my first) I went and got them because I figured I should start taking something. When I went in for my first appt. I showed my OBGYN and she was like "these are actually better than most of what we prescribe, so just keep taking these." My friend took them with her pregnancy. I recommended them to her and her OB said the same thing as mine. And you get like 100 pills for $10.00! They never made me feel nauseous or anything. I really liked them. Hope this helps.

My doc never wrote me a prescription, just told me to get whichever OTC ones I preferred, they all basically do the job. If you have a specific reason to need vitamins that have a higher dosage of certain nutrients, like iron for example, then it will matter which brand you choose. I would contact your doc and explain that you cannot afford the prescription vitamins and could they recommend a less expensive alternative. You could also ask a pharmacist their advice for an equivalent OTC vitamin to your prescription.

i'm pretty sure otc prenatals do a similar job..but don't quote me because i'm no doctor and i'm unsure if you have special nutritional/supplemental needs.

fyi...i never stopped taking my prenatal. my doc recommends it as a great multivitamin even after you are done making babies ;)

I just went to walmart today and they sell prenatal gummy vitamins for $12.00. I am one who can't swallow pills and would have loved those.

I buy my prenatals at the drugstore. I think the last bottle I got was at Target and I know I didn't pay more than $10 for like 200 pills that are one a day. I tried the prescription ones with my first pregnancy but they upset my stomach and my doctor told me it doesn't really matter which ones you take they are mostly all the same. She's right. I read the labels of several different kinds and they are pretty much all the same. Just make sure it's high in folic acid.

Prenatal vitamins are HUGE and I couldnt swallow them. The doctor wrote me a prescription for chewable ones but they made me sick. So I took Flintstone vitamins. 2 twice a day. In combination with folic acid. Baby came out perfectly healthy.

I got the expensive ones...and I vomit them all, every single time!!
Then my doctor gave me some to try for free (the trial packages) and I keep throwing all of them, finally I just got the over the county gummy ones and not only I could hold them but I love them (the other ones were huge), I know they aren't as good but it was better then throwing up and my toilet seem to be the only thing that would hold them (I guess the fishes thank me, lol)
So, ask your doctor for some try before you buy the expensive ones or ask him about a cheaper brand, I am sure he knows something that is a lot less expensive

My sister works for an OBGYN office and when we were trying I asked one of the Dr's there which prenatal I should buy. She said that the Target brand was the best over the counter out there. There are lists online of what a 'good' prenatal will have in it, so just make sure whatever you buy has those important ones in it. Now that I am pregnant I take OB Complete with DHA. Its like $15 for a 30 day, but it may just be my insurance. not sure. Congrats on the baby!

My OB told me over the counter vitamins are just as good, although not all are created equal. I always looked to make sure there was at least 800 mcg of folic acid (1 mg is better) and a good supply of iron. I took the CVS brand with DHA when pregnant, and I've switched to the Target brand now because they're SO much cheaper ($5 for a 3 month supply!).

I used ones I could only find in the Kaiser pharmacy! I dont have Kaiser so my mom was my dealer and got them for me :)
I liked these because they were small, not like taking a horse pill!

I buy the ones that have good absorption. Not all of them work well. I did research to find the best ones and I can tell by how I feel while taking them. =) The best so far is Melaleuca's. They are very inexpensive too. They have Prenatal's and I'm still taking them while nursing. I had trouble with them while pregnant though so I had to take half the recommended dose. With my other pregnancies, I had to take children's chewables because I couldn't keep them down. =) I still did the research and got the healthiest chewables. Good luck!!
