Premature Puberty in Little Girls?

My daughter is 18 months old and has had a swollen left breast since birth. The right one went down but the left if anything has gotten bigger. No one knows whats causing it at the moment. She goes to a specialist at Winthrop who mentioned premature puberty, or sometimes a growth on the hypothalmus in the brain. Has anyone gone through anything like this because it makes me a little nervous. P.S. I know a lot of you have asked but no i have never breast fed her OR my son.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

At this point, my daughter went back to the specialist and her breast has gone down quite a bit. I still don't know the reason, but they just want to check her again in 2 months.

it happened with my oldest it will go away i think by premature puberty they mean that there is a hormone in little girls that helps them prepare when they are older. it will go away and be unnoticeable until the normal teen stages. i hope this helps. have them explain it a little so they don't freak you out as much.

"They" say that kids are starting puberty early due to the high content of steriods they now give farm animals to grow quick and produce more meat. Perhaps your daughter's extra sensitive to the steroids that are coming into her through the meat... maybe I'd try oragnic meat for awhile and see if that helps... it sure can't hurt. Back when my mom was a child girls went thru puberty way later then girls now do, and that's a direct result of the things they're now pumping into the animals we consume. I've never heard of that happening at 18 months though, but I would suspect it could be she's oversensitive to the steroids in the meat... OR, she could have got a lot of your hormones and for some reason is having a hard time shaking them from her system....I also wonder if she could have some glandular problem that's causing that. Please let us know what the doctor says, I'm curious about what could cause this!

K.,
You do not mention if you are breast feeding or not. If you are there are ALOT of hormones in the food that we eat. Did you know that there are 90 hormones in milk!
There are hormones that are in chicken to increase the breast size! My son was growing breasts before I realized that his favorite food was creating breasts! There are MANY reasons that this could be occuring. I would never diagnose over the computer but take that into consideration!

I would ask the doctor to explain better what he thinks it is and the actions, if any, you should be taking. I have read about premature puberty, influence of hormones and additives and similar problems, but I have not really seen them first hand.

One of my nieces started puberty at 8 years old, she was given hormones to stop it and, in her case, the excesive amount of chicken in her diet marked as the possible cause.

What puzzles me is that only one breast is affected, puberty should affect both breasts, shouldn't it? Did the doctor say this is common?

Hi K.,

Don't worry, I had the same issue with my first son. I know it sounds strange, but once you read on, you'll feel so much better.

I am assuming that you still breast feed your daughter? If that is in fact the case, what is happening is that breast tissue is forming because your daughter is ingesting the hormones that are produced for your body.

When that happened with my son...and I found out the reason, I cut back on the breast feeding and weened him off completely. As the breast milk slowed down the left breast he had slowly went down and eventually disappeared.

However, if you are not still breast feeding, then I have to admit, I am not sure why your daughter would be experiencing this.

Here for you,
L.
