Pregnant with an IUD??

Hi moms,
I was wondering if any of you had ever gotten pregnant with the mirena IUD?? I had mine inserted in April. For about 5 weeks I bleed none-stop with maybe a day or two break in between weeks. Finally it stopped and I started having normal periods and everything was fine. Well now I am feeling pregnant. My boobs have swollen and hurt like hell, I have frequent heandaches, nauseas every once in a while and much more tired than normal. Its pretty much the same way I started out with my first pregnancy. I checked my strings and now they are not there and I am worried. I am getting a hpt at lunch today to test as the nurse at my doctors office said I need to and then let them know. But I am just wondering if anyone had the same experience and turned out to be pregnant or if it was just something else?

What can I do next?

That is a pretty typical side effect of Mirena (the preg symptoms) i recently had mine removed due to problems. Good luck...

My OB said she sees more pregnancies on IUD's than any other form of birth control!!! So it is very possible!

I have a 14 month old and got pregnant when she was 5 months old. I am due in September, so if you are pregnant I will know what you are feeling :)
2 kids under the age of 2 is going to be life changing!

Good luck on the test!

Although nothing is %100 but the chances of getting pregnant with an IUD is pretty much unheard of. Your body is probably just having symptoms from the IUD. you might want to try another from of birth control that doesn't make you body so crazy. But still get checked out from the doc and see what he says.

I had the Mirena IUD and LOVED it!! I did not have any periods on it and my mood swings went way down. However I did get pregnant at the 4 year 10 month mark. I had it removed and had a ultra sound right after to make sure everything was ok and found out I was 11 weeks prego. I had no clue. I was on bed rest for a while to make sure everything was ok. My baby is now 3 months old and a wonderful surprise! I hope all works out for you!!

Long story short I just had an IUD put in that went straight through my uterus and right into my abdomen. It was a nightmare and I ended up having to have emergency surgery to have it taken out...Since the whole ordeal I have talked to several people about what happened and come to find out I was an IUD baby, two of my cousins were IUD babies, both of my nurses in my recovery room were IUD babies, and my anesthesiologist (sp) was also an IUD baby. I am surprised about how many people I have found to have been concieved even with an IUD. I would definitely say tat you should get a pregnancy test.

I haven't, but a friend of mine got pregnant with Mirena. It ended up being a tubal pregnancy. My doctor told me it was a risk and wanted to make sure that if I was having signs of pregnancy that I got a test asap. It sounds like you are on the right track. Good luck!

You should see your doctor for peace of mind. My mom got pregnant with her first baby while she had an IUD in place, the doctor that she saw took it out and told her that she would probably then miscarry but she didn't! My older brother was born healthy and full term and is now very successful and smart as an adult so the IUD had not ill effect on him.

hi R., Congrats on the new baby! I have had the mirena iud since december almost 8 months. At first there was a some heavy cramping and bleeding for a bout a week. Had a little spotting and nothing since. I havn't experienced any of the symptoms of being pregnant and hardly notice it is there at all. I would suggest going into the obgyn to have it loked at. It could have fallen out if you see no strings. good luck!!

I had an IUD years ago. But don't you understand the concept of an IUD? You do get pregnant but the IUD wipes it off the walls of the uterus and won't let it establish itself and then you just bleed it out with your next period. So yes, you can have the symptoms of pregnancy but you should still have a normal period. If the symptoms persist then I would have it checked out. I had mine like 15 years ago. I also had many problems with it and eventually had it removed.

Well, remember that nothing is 100%. So it is a big possibility. It sounds like quite an ordeal with the iud . I suggest taking it out. Not only is causing you problems now , but what about when it is time to take it out?? If there are other issues with other birth control, then the best non toxic to your body is condoms. These are great with all the new warming lubs that are out there.
Good luck and god bless

I have not had a pregnancy with an IUD, but a family member of mine did. The baby, whom we love and adore, was born at 24 weeks. Through a series of miracles, he has made it and is not disabled in any way. I wish you the best. If you are pregnant, things will work out--maybe not how you expected, but things have a way of working out if you just keep moving forward with hope. I wish you the best.

I also had an IUD in April and had similar problems with bleeding. It still seems to be off and on, but about once a month I get period like symptoms with no period. I think it is because I am still breast-feeding full-time. I have not heard a lot about getting pregnant with an IUD, but I think you should take a test ASAP and get to the doctor if you are. There is a higher risk of tubal pregnancies and not implanting correctly b/c the IUD is blocking. Best of luck.

I had that IUD and the whole time I felt pregnant and I was miserable. Along with symptoms of pregnancy I started gaining weight and a very rapid pace as well as I started losing chunks of hair every night. I started getting panic attacks and my moods were out of control. I finally took it out after researching and looking on message boards about Mirena nightmares and I kid you not, the next day I was in the bathroom all day because it felt like my body was expelling built up waste. I hope not to sound gross, but you could just be experiencing a side effect. Not everyone's body will respond the same, you will need to monitor yourself and see if Mirena is the right choice for you.

Hi R.,

I've had the Mirena for about 2 years-- I got it placed 6 wks after the birth of my 2nd son, and your story sounds very similar. I was all over the map the first year, bleeding irregularly, then normal periods, then no periods. About a year in, I too couldn't find the strings and was feeling horrible pregnancy symptoms-- esp. nausea and headaches. I thought for sure I was preggo, but alas, it was just symptoms of the IUD. It was wierd that this wouldn't develop until MONTHS after insertion. I almost got it taken out, b/c it was so bad, but waited a few more months and now things are fine. While it is uncommon to get pregnant with the mirena, it certainly isn't impossible, so it's good you're getting it checked out. Good luck!

I experienced something very similar just a month ago. It turned out I was not pregnant. I feel sure it was a side effect of the IUD. I did a ton of online research and found a lot of stories of women having the same symptoms on an IUD and not being pregnant.

It is possible, but unlikely, to become pregnant with an IUD in place. With an IUD your risk of tubal pregnancy goes up, so if you get a positive result on your hpt get yourself to the doctor right away. Good luck!
