Pregnant While Nursing... - Chicago,IL

I'm just curious if anyone has gotten pregnant *while still nursing their baby AND having not had their period return*? I know it's kind of a specific question but being we're in our late 30's, we'd like to try for baby number 3---but our 12 month old is still nursing about 5 times in a 24 hour period and my menstrual cycle has not returned yet. I know some women have to totally wean or significantly cut down on the nursing in order for the hormone levels to change, get their period back and then get pregnant...
I guess if I'm one of those women, it might take a while to conceive since I don't want to force our son to cut back on nursing if he's not ready to.

What can I do next?

YES. I was still nursing my 14 month old, first born child. NEVER had my period, even though he had been eating solids for a while. All of a sudden, I get morning sickness, take a pregnancy test and whamo, we had a baby 8 months later. B/c I never had a period, the Dr's didn't know exactly how far along I was until I had a few ultrasounds that measured a consistently growing baby that gave me an estimated due date. Fun times... I went almost 4 years without a period! Oh, my son still nursed for a couple of months longer into my pregnancy. Hormones make the milk taste not as good, and I was ready to quit nursing the bigger/sicker I got.

Yes, it happened for me with my third. It happens. My baby was only four mos old when I got preg with the third and period didn't return yet. I was nursing full time at the time.

I got pregnant 2 weeks after I stopped nursing -- I never got a period. I must have conceived the very first time I ovulated. I nursed for 11 months but for the last two months I was only nursing 2-3 times a day with lots of baby food in between.

Yes, all of mine (4) were conceived while I was still nursing around the clock. (Except the first!).

But I did have periods return about 2 months after the last one was born. Nursing has never had any affect on conception for me.

It's happened to both of my sisters.
Pregnant while nursing full time. Both we're an oops.

My period came back right away and I got pregnant while nursing as easily as I ever did. My friend who was still nursing, did not have a period and at 13 months went to the Dr. thinking it was strange. Turns out she was pregnant at 11 months without ever having gotten a period.

Definitely possible, I've known at least three women personally this happened to, nursing full time and part-time, no periods in any, so it was kind of hard to pinpoint when conception took place until the ultrasounds. ; )

This is an old wives tale. If you look back at your genealogy you will almost always see babies born every 10 months. That's because they relied on nursing to protect them against pregnancy. If it did work for a while there were baby's every other year.

So if you do not want to get pregnant while having unprotected sex then use a form of birth control that does not effect the other stuff going on in the body.

I got pregnant with my second while nursing my son who had just turned 2. I had 4 periods between the first birth and the second at very irregular intervals, so I was NOT expecting to get pregnant! I also nursed my first all through my second pregnancy and tandem-nursed for a couple of weeks until my older one said "that's for the baby now" :)
