Pregnant or Not ?!?!? Need Some Reassurance

Last Monday I took a pregnancy test and it was positive, but I had bad cramping which I usually get during AF anyway. I called my doctors office and the nurse wanted me to come in to check my HCG levels. Next day my nurse called me and told me that my HCG levels were really low ... I asked if I had just caught it early and she said it looked like the pregnancy was not there or I will miscarry. I was so depressed and I was terrified to go to the bathroom. Thursday morning I went in for another blood test. Friday a nurse called me and said my levels were going up and looks good, and to start taking my prenatal vitamins. She said I caught my pregnancy early ... which is exactly what I thought.

Well this morning I went in to see my doctor and he said my levels were still low and he wanted me to take another blood test. I know I am pregnant, I feel it. With my other 2 pregnancies I knew I was pregnant before I even took a test .... I also knew they were girls before finding out. I have "mother's intuition", I know this baby is there and its upsetting when my doctor and nurse are basically saying otherwise.

My levels last Monday were 46 and my levels from Thursday were 164. So they went up which is good and on a positive side of things. Yes they are on the lower side I understand that. Tomorrow I will be 5 weeks and I have all pregnancy symptoms minus morning sickness (I am not broken up about that one .... I had BAD morning sickness with my girls). I do however have cramping, I am not dying in pain or anything but I notice the cramping comes when I am upset....

Have any of you experienced low HCG levels and had a normal pregnancy ?

Thank You,
S.

Hi,

That happened to me also. I don't remember what the levels were, maybe 90 one day and 170 two days later (I was right around 5 weeks too)...Regardless, the levels were low and I did not have ONE SINGLE pregnancy symptom! All I had was a positive pregnancy test to go on. I didn't go through AF, but I knew when my period had been, when I had ovulated, etc. Anyway, I worried a lot initially (I had miscarried before), but I ended up with a beautiful baby boy! So, try not to worry (that won't help, or change, anything at all). I wish you the best!

I have had it go both ways...first time was a miscarriage, last time it was low for several weeks before it got to "normal' levels, then all was fine.
I know it's so hard & you want reassurance, but only time will tell. I am sure you are pregnant, but you will have to wait to see if it will stick. I will be praying for you!

I will second the first response. I've been going through this a lot in the past year, having pregnancy symptoms and then not staying pregnant. It sounds like you have a good chance of staying pregnant, but you will just need to wait. I would take it easy for sure and do as little exercise as possible until the pregnancy is further along and you have more information. Best Wishes.

Couldn't you ask for an ultrasound to make sure?

I have 8 grown kids and back in the 'old days' they didn't do so much testing so early and you were able to just enjoy the pregnancy and if you lost the baby you mourned and that was it as you didn't have all this time to wonder or levels to worry about. I'm not saying it's bad today but I just wish you could enjoy the pregnancy and see what God has planned for you either way. I was told that morning sickness is a good sign as it's when the placenta is being formed and so that's not bad to have some at least. I hope you have a healthy pregnancy with little worry and no problems.

I had a lot of cramping the 1st month or so with both of my pregnancies. That was always my 1st symptom and I had 2 very healthy pregnancies.

Hi mom!

I experienced something similar- my pregnancy test came out positive, went to the doctor and he said either I was having abnormal pregnancy or I ovulated later than I thought. After 2 consecutive blood tests, followed by ultrasound, it was confirmed that it is a positive pregnancy. Now, I'm at 13 weeks and everything looks great.

I also had cramping and severe back pain up until 6-7 weeks. It worried me a lot, but things came back to normal.

I hope this helps to alleviate the concerns abit and wish you the best!

It is not so much the numbers that you start at, they need to double every two days. I put your numbers in to a calculator and your doubling time was 1.6 days, so that would be perfect. http://www.obfocus.com/calculators/betahCG.htm

I would get a new doctor. It doesn't sound like yours is very good. (He should have known that and explained it to you.)

If your HCG levels slow down or continue to be low, some doctors will prescribe progesterone to help through the first trimester. That is what happened with my last pregnancy.

I am currently 20 weeks pregnant, and like you started with really low levels. This is my 3rd pregnancy. I have one healthy girl and one that ended in miscarriage. Because of the miscarriage they began to monitor my levels as soon as I found out I was pregnant. I think they started at 70... My doctor told me that as long as they double every 48 hours things were looking good. Sounds like things are looking good for you! Congratulations on your pregnancy.

S.-

My hcg levels were so low, I was 9 weeks along before any test (home or drs.) showed that I was pregnant, and I knew that I was the whole time. Listen to yourself...you're usually right. Everyone's body and hormone levels are a little different and every pregnancy is different. Think positive and enjoy your little miracle that is on the way.

Congrats!

regardless of your intuition, regardless of what the doctor says....what will be- will be.

Give yourself time, follow the drs recommendations, & try to keep your stress levels down. It's the hardest thing to do.... & yes, I've gone both ways- it's so hard to be patient! & it's so frustrating to KNOW the dr is wrong.....

well I'm no doctor but those levels sound pretty good to me. I miscarried at 5 weeks just a couple of weeks ago. I took a test at 4 weeks that was positive then started bleeding a week later so I went into my doc so they could check my HCG levels to make sure I wasn't still pregnant. My levels came back as a 3 so it was for sure that I lost my baby. When you first are pregnant and it is detected by a pregnancy test your levels have to be at least a 5 then it doubles everyday after that if your don't miscarry. So at 5 weeks mine should have been much higher. So for you to be 5 weeks and have levels at 164 that is good and as long as they keep rising then your should be just fine.
