Pregnant and Sick...Ideas for Relief Please.

I am 9 days from my due date and the Dr. said I could go any time. My daughter cought a cold and then my husband now me. They can take over the counter relief meds but I'm limited. The symptoms are a wicked sore throat, stuffy head and chest congestion w/cough. I never got sick during the first two pregnancies and am at a loss to know what will provide relief without harming baby. Today I woke up in such pain in my head and throat, I don't really want to talk...hurts too much.
Any suggestions you might have would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

I experienced the same issue. Boil water with lemon in it. Drink it hot. It's gross going down but works miracles!

Call your ob/gyn and ask what you can take as far as over the counter stuff.

I was sick as a dog when I went into labor. (Actually I coughed so much and so hard that I broke my own water and then was IN labor.) I know there are things you CAN take b/c I did ask but I don't remember specifically what they were.

Try to do the basics: rest, TONS of fluids, tea with honey & lemon for the throat etc. and please call your dr. as soon as you can today for some advice.

Hope you feel better soon!

Oh, my sympathies! I would take Tylenol for the headache, and make a home-made syrup for your throat: take a tablespoon of honey, add some fresh-squeezed lime or lemon, and slowly suck it off a spoon. The honey is a natural anti-inflammatory and the citrus has a ton of vitamin C...it helps my throat a lot when I can't take traditional medicine. Hope you feel better soon!

Hello-I have not tried this but I have heard it works wonders. If you warm some lemon juice and honey and drink it, it should help all. I thought maybe it was worth a shot-good luck! Hope you feel better soon!

I had the same and was miserable with the sore throat!! I couldn't believe how much gargling with salt water helped. FINALLY I could get some relief! As much salt as you can take in warm water. Stir to dissolve gargle and spit. I did it frequently (like every couple of hours) as needed. Hope you feel better soon!

Have you spoken to your OB/Midwife? A nice steam over a pot of hot water with some chamomile tea is good. Neti Pots are an option. Salt water gargles are nasty but effective.

Tylenol is very well accepted as safe during pregnancy (make sure it's regular tylenol, not tylenol cold). You can call your Ob's office for reassurance on this, and they might have other suggestions as well.

If it were me, I'd probably do the tylenol and a constant cup of hot tea with honey...

I hope you feel better soon!

Ugh-this happened to me with my last pregnancy during the last week. It was a stomach flu instead, bending over and heaving-no fun that size! Not to mention I had thrown out my back diving out of the way of a bat that had gotten in the house and was coming up the stairs right at me!,,anyway...

This is just me, but I would suffer through it. It's miserable, and it may be fine to take something, but I wouldn't risk anything this late in the game. Certain things can cause some blood thinning and excessive bleeding, so if you go early, this could be an issue, even if it wouldn't have mattered earlier on. Also, for your baby, always better safe than sorry.

I would break out the herbal tea (one without pregnancy warnings) with fresh lemon juice and real grated ginger and honey and cayenne pepper sprinkled in it to clear your head and cause a comfort/distraction. This will be over soon-good luck to you whatever you choose!

First of all, double-check ANY advice you get here with some sort of medical professional--doctor, pharmacist, even at least a nurse.

Have you tried tea with lemon or honey? I have a particular one that Yogi Tea makes for sore throats that I swear by at work. (Dispatchers don't do so well with a sore throat, for obvious reasons!) I'd check with your ob/gyn about active ingredients, but surely there's something you can use.

Call your Doctor, there are lots of meds that they can give you or suggest to you that are very safe and effective. You do not need to suffer! Best wishes.

Congrats on your baby!

Our son (#5) was born 8 weeks ago today and I still had a cough from the cold I caught just 2 weeks before he was born. My ob told me I could/should do the following: keep up fluids, cough drops, vicks on the chest (I've also heard vicks on the feet at night with socks on is amazing) and humidifier. I had the flu when our 3rd was born and it disappeared when I went into labor. The cough and stuffy nose came back, but the fever, aches and pains never did. I've been told that an illness can go 'dormant' during labor...hopefully that will happen for you!
