Pregnant and My Digestive System Has Gone Crazy

I just found out that I'm pregnant for the second time. I'm only about 5 weeks along, but already I am experiencing extreme constipation. I am normally (when not pregnant) exactly the opposite and certain foods will even upset my stomach and make me "go". I experienced this with my first pregnancy, but not until my 5th month and later. I am taking Colace, eating vegetables and trying to stay away from cheese and heavy dairy. I'm eating much better now than I was last time, but nothing seems to be working. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has had this trouble, but I'm getting frustrated and need some advice. Some tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
K.

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for all the great responses! While things are definately not back to normal, they are getting better. I had already been eating activia for breakfast every morning, drinking a TON of water and eating lots of vegetables. I have since added Grape Nuts or All Bran and blueberries to the activia....super yummy and HIGH fiber, I have doubled my water intake and upped my vegetables. I stopped taking the Colace (since it didn't seem to be doing anything) and started drinking Metamucyl (pink lemonade flavor is not bad) once a day. I already eat whole grain everything so there wasn't much to change there. I am heading to the store today to see if there's a pre-natal that might work better for me. As I said, though I am still not back to my normal self, I am getting better. More than anything I am hoping to prevent future incidents, since in my last pregnancy I had a 6th month horror story!! I won't go into any details. Again, thank you all so much for your advice and congratulations. Hopefully now I can focus on my good news instead of the bathroom ;-)

I started taking a fiber supplement right before I became pregnant the second time. And, the more I got pregnant the more constipated I became. The doctors said the fiber I was taking should be fine, so I kept taking it. Then my problems were getting worse and worse, so they suggested taking more. Finally, after nothing was helping, I decided to stop taking the fiber supplements all together and that completely solved my problem. I just realized that my body was completely different than most out there - when most should be taking more fiber, I was already eating a decent diet and didn't need to add it in. So, after you've tried all the fiber suggestions (which are usually the answer), and if you're still having problems, I would suggest trying to stop the additional fiber and see how you do. Good Luck.

Hi K.,

I totally understand try a wonderful product called Fiber Con it's Fiber supplments. I took them throughout my pregnancy and that helped so much, I took one pill 4 times a day and my doctor said that it was fine to do, so I did that and drank lots of water. I hope it helps and congrats on the 2nd baby!

I went through the same thing with the pregnancy I am in right now. I talked to my doctor because the colace stuff didn't work for me at all and the constipation was extremely painful. He gave me a prescription for miralax, i think that is what it was called. I increased my water intake and added more fruit and that seemed to help a lot. Congrats on the pregnancy!

I feel for you! I'm pregnant as well and I'm not as regular as I'd like to be!! I'm in my 6th month and my pregnancy started off a lot more constipated than I liked. One thing I've always had in my head is that if I don't really feel like going, it is okay not to go for a day or two. When it needs to come out it will! But I also know that drinking a warm water drink in the morning (lacking caffeine) is helpful. Have a hot chocolate, or just a cup of warm water. Sounds terribly gross, but it gets my system going and is used in other cultures as a daily thing to do. I found this out by reading an Ayurvedic book (India). I found that tea was my favorite, but had to make some changes in that department so I just drink some warm water now.

Talk to your doctor about which warm beverages would be okay for you. A warm fiber drink isn't bad either. That would give it a little extra power. ;)

Good luck!

Try eating some oatmeal( slow cooked, not instant which has alot of additives), or some other high fiber cereal. Nuts as snacks, almonds and pistachios are good and high fiber. Eat the cereal for breakfast ofcourse! Lots of fresh fruit for snacks as well.

I was going to suggest looking into your prenatals like Carrie. Iron does cause constipation, but you can get a low-iron prenatal vitamin as well. I had that problem with both of my boys, but not my daughter. Maybe there's a gender connection:)

Congrats on the pregnancy!!

You stated you are a work at home mom, do you mind if I inquire what you do? I also am a work at home mom, I work with a health & wellness company. They have the best prenatal vitamins I have ever taken and they have great and inexpensive fiber bars & drinks that are amazing, awesome products for around the house. You can take a look at gotgreennow.fourpointmoms.com Good information there. Will pray that your frustrations subside and you get to feeling better, stress on the baby could be dangerous for him or her.

I had this same problem when I was pregnant with both my children. There are pre natal vitamins that have laxatives in them that are safe and give you the ability to go regularly. Just talk to your ob and tell them what's going on. Just remember after you have the baby stop taking those pre natal vitamins and take the regular pre natal vitamins, as the ones with the laxatives will affect the baby too should you breastfeed. Hope this helps. Please talk to your doc before you try anything.

Lots and lots of water, all the time will help with constipation. Always too check in with your OBGYN about taking things and asking for assistance if it is consistently causing you problems.
With both of my pregnancies I carried a water bottle around with me everywhere.
You don't have to stay away from cheese as that is a really good thing for pregnant women, but keeping yourself really hydrated is essential to keep the fluids moving in your body. Also eating Activa will help aid in digestive disorders. It is natural, has calcium and really has helped me a ton.
Ask about teas too, like green teas that moves the metobolism along, ask your Dr first. You can get it in decaf form, pour it over ice if you don't like hot tea.
Our bodies do weird things being pregnant. I had heart burn and so much nasal congestion and bleeding gums! :)

Please make sure you are well hydrated with good water (that your body can readily use). 1/2 ounce per pound of body weight per day. There are so many incredible benefits that water can provide you. In the book, Water Cures, a doctor believes that most chronic disease is really chronic dehydration. I'm in the process of writing an article on the types of water, plus what to look for in a filtration system. It is not quite done yet, but I'd be happy to send it to you as well as some more info. Fruits are also very good to get you moving too.
Take care!

I was this way with my third. I tried the other things mentioned, but the thing that seemed to help me the most was taking a late morning shower and letting the hot water hit my lower back and just relax. Usually by the end of the shower I could feel the urge. If you can exercise first it's even more effective. Congratulations!

I was that way with all my pregnancies. I gound I cannot take any prenatal vitamins. Something about the combination really messes me up. Even had me in the hospital with constipation and there was nothing they could do. It was meserable. I found I could handle the Amway vitamins and they have very good ones. Also I take Fiber Choice fruit tablets. They taste great and I can't drink those other fiber drinks. They are awful. I chew at least two a night or three if I had a lot of dairy and have never been so regular. Drink water! Lots!

Really load up on fruit and veggies! Eat at least one apple and one bowl of lettuce salad a day, in addition to all the other fruits and veggies you can eat. If all else fails, BENEFIBER is wonderful! When I was pregnant, I would sprinkle it on top of my cereal in the morning. No grit, no flavor, etc. Also, buy a breakfast cereal that is high in fiber-I like shredded wheat/mini wheats and wheat bran flakes.
Drink lots of water and go for a walk everyday-your digestive system should be much happier!
Good luck!

Sounds like we have some similiar colon issues. There are some foods that cause cramps and make me go almost immediately after they hit the old intestine. I've also always had trouble with constipation and hard stool. Pregnancy always excerbated the problem.
I'm not going to give up my dairy, the calcium is too important and I like dairy products, love all kinds of cheese. Same with peanut butter and bananas, two other binding culprits, not going to give them up unless I absolutely have to. None of these things upset my colon, but cause problems in elimination. Metamucil, while effective, is messy in the glass, don't like the taste or texture and caused me cramps, bloat and lots of gas. Stool softeners caused a nasty dribble type thing, without helping with real elimination. I've never tried aloe, but you want to do some research before using it. Aloe is one of nature's healers, but there are side effects on the digestive system. Plenty of fluids are key. You may become concerned about water retention, but actually, lack of fluids contributes to water retention problems. The advice for a warm drink in the morning is good. I personally, drink decaf coffee that's half milk. Any tea that suits your taste is good also. Doesn't have to be a high priced one, they all contain the same anti-oxidant properties, contrary to marketing and advertising propaganda. You may want to stick to the decaf varieties, though. If you like your drinks sweetened, don't use sugar, brown or white. You want to be sparing with white sugar use, regardless. It's also a real binder and encourages the growth of bad bacteria in those with other colon issues. Use honey, or if worried about extra calories in the honey or overbalance of glucose vs insulin, try stevia drops. I use stevia, no impact on glucose/insulin, (have low blood sugar issues). It's an herb, no side effects. You could also try xylitol for sweetner, not an herb, but no impact on blood sugar. Just be careful where you buy either, if you use. Lots of sellers, but lots of fillers in some brands. I buy stevia online from Puritan's Pride. Try to make it a habit to consume 4-6 ounces of liquid every hour or so, whether you do it in one gulp or just sip every few minutes. The old rememdy our foremothers used of a prune a day is quite helpful. Quick to eat, inexpensive. I don't really care for prunes and don't use them much, but they work for me. No cramping, no gas, no dribble factor. Eat something for breakfast every day as soon as you can tolerate food. You hear many reasons for eating breakfast, most all are right on target. Helps with weight maintenance, blood sugar stabilization, brain power. One they often leave out is the effect eating breakfast has on peristalsic rhythm. I guess it isn't pretty to talk about the body's need to poop on a regular basis. There needs to be something added in order to push the old used up stuff out. If we don't keep something going in, our bodies hoard the waste trying to squeeze every last drop of water and nutrients. Squeezes it down to something very dry, rock hard and not much of it. Hence...constipation. I eat oatmeal a lot of days with a dozen or so raisins in it and sorghum molasses or honey to sweeten. Some days it's raisin bran. (I like to heat the milk and let it get soft) Some days I want bacon and eggs, or pancakes, so that's what I have. I like english muffins with cream cheese and blackberry jam. On the days I'm eating those things not considered fibrous, I drink about 6oz of pure grape juice, not the grape juice drink. I also use Benefiber about every other day. About a teaspoon in a drink, or sprinkled in my cereal, or even over the eggs. It's tasteless and dissolves well, even over the eggs. No gas, no cramps, no dribble effect if I only use it about every other day. If you think you need to "jump start" the process, or think the stool may be becoming impacted, at this stage of pregnancy, you can safely use a Fleet's enema sold at pharmacies and in the health sections of box and grocery stores. Just be sure to warm the bottle in some warm water first to avoid causing cramping. Conversely, don't get it too hot. I hate the effects of by mouth laxatives, as they are unpredictable and sometimes don't know when to stop, also full of chemicals I'm not sure about. With a small enema, once the water is out and the initial elimination is done, that's it. I would stay away from any fast working laxative, especially enemas in the last trimester, as they can trigger labor. Eat as many naturally water containing veggies as you can tolerate. Citrus fruits are good if you can tolerate them. Personally, I love the taste and texture of citrus, but they wreak havoc on my colon. Spinach, kale and turnip greens seem to be helpful to me. Fresh, canned, frozen, all have done equally well. I like the dark, almost bitter chocolate and have noticed they have a slight laxative effect. You might break your prenatal vitamin in half, take half with breakfast, the other half with lunch or a snack in the afternoon. That serves three purposes. Many of the nutrients contained in the supplement are not retained. The body absorbs some of it, the rest we pee out within an hour of taking. Taking it in two doses assures you get the max benefit of all the nutrients, help with that mid afternoon sag we all get and keeps the body from being loaded all at once with the nutrients that are retained and add to the constipation problem.
One last thing, try not to strain at the stool. You don't want to add hemorroids to the problem list. This last may seem a little too graphic, but here goes anyway in the hope it may help. If you can tell the stool has worked it's way down enough it should be coming out, but won't because it has become quite rocky hard, try a little manual stimulation of the anal sphincter. Many chronically constipated people have "trained" their intestines to not eliminate. The peristalsic process has been interrupted and retrained to hold on to the matter as long as possible, all the way to the end. A little preparation H or other water soluble ointment(so as not to clog the pipes) on a gloved finger, or even a few layers of toilet tissue for lubrication and gentle massage for several seconds will help the final peristalsic muscles begin their duty and help you do your doody. Just be careful to not get the fingernails involved and cause a cut or tear to the anal tissue. You also do not want to make this a frequent habit, as the muscle will become trained to always need stimulation for elimination.
The things to remember are: you can only eliminate as much as you put in, minus the water and nutrients. i.e. if there isn't much going in, not much can come out and it's been compacted by your body to the max because not enough came in to replace it. Put in more water than your body actually requires to aid in the elimination of all the toxic stuff that needs to be dumped. Keep the flow of things going in at a steady pace, that trains your intestines to let things through, not hoard them. Good luck to good riddance!

I second the earlier suggestion of magnesium.

Other suggestions:
Different prenatal vitamin. I really like the ones from www.rainbowlight.com, the Prenatal One.

Increased fiber. The chewable tablets are pretty good. The fiber bars from www.gnufoods.com (may be available at your local health food store) are really yummy & they work great.

Good luck!

Have you tried upping your water intake? (By a lot?) in addition to this, you might want to try one of the many fiber supplements out there. It is better for your system than colace, as it's a natural food substance and your body doesn't get dependent on it. If you don't want added sugar, you can buy plain psyllium at health food stores. This is the main ingredient in Metamucil, etc, but it has no flavor. Just the lumpy, bumpy texture when mixed with water. It can be very effective. Good luck, and congratulations on the pregnancy!

OH that sounds way too familiar. I hate to recomend this but chocolate worked so well for me. I know that sounds terrible but it did. I also had a strict routine of 1 cup of cafine free coffee each morning and I tried to walk for at least 10 minutes a day. I have continued this routine for as I get older the trouble has stayed with me. I believe that it is partially hormones when you are pregnant and then when you get older just age. I ate grapes like crazy too. Those things really helped me, I hope you have success. Your trouble can lead to colon cancer in the future so be aggressive with solving it. I've tried everything and here is the answer. Up your intake of Magnesium. I take 300-500 mg. a day depending on my regularity and it works!!! My 2 sisters and mom do it now too and it is great!!! If you get too much, you will know it and take a smaller dose. Of course 1 benefiber chewable every am is good and when I was pregnant, I had to work out every am to keep regular. Just some like aerobics and stretching and I would go. Hope it helps!

Try Metamucil or generic equivalent. It is one of the most effective types of fiber - you mix a tablespoon in a glass of water & drink - once a day should do it. It doesn't taste bad and is safe to use during pregnancy. Colace is a stool softener, so it makes it easier to go when you are ready, but I'm not sure how much it helps with actual constipation. The new prescription prenatal vitamins also have ingredients in them to help you go, but the prescription prenatals are pretty expensive.

You didn't say whether or not you are taking prenatals, but that could be the culprit if you are. Most of them have too much iron for most womens' systems and that causes the constipation. I had that problem and my doctor had me take two kids' Flintstones with iron instead (one morning, one night) and the constipation went away. Good luck!

The 3 ingredients your body needs to avoid constipation are fiber, water & oil. For fiber, try high fiber cereals (like Fiber One), veggies and maybe a supplement like Citrucel. Drink lots of water & make sure you get plenty of healthy oils - like olive oil or a fish oil supplement. If none of that works, check with your doctor about possibly switching prenatal vitamins.

try a different pre-natal. I take "new chapter organics" brand called "perfect pre-natal". they are a little spendy, but they have added pro-biotics that help your digestion. with my first pregnancy I took a pre-natal that my doctor recommended for about 5 days and was soooo constipated by the end that I thought I was going to die, I was so uncomfortable. switching brands really helped.

also, drink lots of water, eat yogurt and try to get a little exercise each day (a short walk will work)... it just keeps things moving. lots of fruits & veg are good too... and avoid starchy food for a few days until things get better.

good luck, I hope you are feeling better soon.

Try adding ground flax seed into your diet, it is really easy to add a bit to many foods and it tastes good! Two tablespoons of flax has as much fiber as 1 1/2 cups of oatmeal. Flax also has omega 3's and is just really good for you and your growing baby. I like the Activia yogurt also, it has twice as much active cultures as regular yogurt and tastes good too. Probiotics and prebiotics are really great too. Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy!

- 10-12 glasses of water (max of 2 glasses at once) per day
- 4 oz pineapple juice for a few days or 3 dried plumbs per day
- exercise - light walking or the reclined biking.
- the iron in your prenatal vitamins can cause constipation but if you're really getting enough fluids, you should be OK.
