My husband and I have been trying to concieve for about 6 months now. I am extremly regular, I am anywhere between 26-28 days on the dot. I am now at 33 days. I took a test on Sunday (day 30) and it came back negative and one again today, same result. I called the doctor and she said that it may be that I am just late. I have never been this late in my life. My nipples hurt and they are a little darker than normal, I feel a little sick and I have been getting headaches a lot lately. Could I be pregnant, even thought I have gotten 2 negative results?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for their advise. I talked to my doctor again and they stated to take a test this morning. I did and it was again negative, so they had me come in for a blood test. That too was negative. therefore, I am just unusually late.

Thanks again, I appreciate your advise.

I don't know if you are pg or not, but when I got pg the first time, I had horrible headaches. My doctor told me that headaches were the most common symptom of pregnancy. Most women don't associate them with pregnancy. Give it a few days and try again. Good Luck!

I just had my second baby. It took me till I was a week and a half late for it to show on a test. I got ten negatives before I got a positive. But I just new I was pregnant so it was odd it took so long for it to show up. So you could be. How fun if you are.

Yes, you could be pregnant. I have 2 boys and both times when I had a pregnancy test done they came back negative. It didn't register positive until I was almost 2 months along. Good luck!

If your inner voice is telling you that you are you probably are. All the symptoms sound like you could possibly be. I would wait another week & take another test or ask the dr for a blood test which is more sensitive.

Hi S.,

You may have already been told this, but your best bet is to have a blood HCG test. So if you don't mind a poke in your arm for some blood, that is my best suggestion. Quite honestly, there are some women that home pregnancy tests don't work for, thus the "99%" accurate statement. I hope the blood test comes back positive for you. Good luck to you.

B.

p.s. I had a girlfriend that did a pregnancy test for the heck of it at 4mo (yes she knew she already was) and it came back negative. Go figure.

It's possible you are pregnant... there is another possibility. How much meat/dairy do you eat? Meat and dairy products (especially dairy) are some of the worst hormone inducing and hormone harboring foods people consume. It's possible that the hormones in the meat/dairy are messing with your cycle. You might try cutting way back on the meat/dairy consumption (if you are pregnant it is a good idea for the baby, and also for feeding after your child is weaned from breast milk).

I was always coming up negative because i miscarried a lot so
by body hid the baby.

Also a funny tale is when a doctor who listened to his teachers got a surprise when they cut me open... no ulcer or bad gall bladder surprised him but a little red faced pink haired well finger favorer little girl.

So anything can happen.

It may be that it is too early to test. The HCG hormone might not be strong enough for the home pregnancy test. I would wait a week and then test again if you have not gotten your period by then. I also want you to remember that your body may just be changing its cycle. I have changed my cycle three times since I got it in the 5th grade. Once when I was 20, 27, and then again at 32. Try to relax..that baby will get made faster if you do not worry about it to.Remember its fun to try and make them not a chore!!! Good luck and let us know in a week what happened! H.

It is a definite possibility. Keep in mind that tests (even the so-called early result ones!) will not give you a positive result until you are at least a week late. I was over 10 days late with my second pregnancy before I finally got a positive result. Good luck!

Hi S.,

Pregnancy is different for everyone.

I never experienced soreness of any kind until my 3rd tri-mester.

I have had friends who have taken the test a few times and they all came back negative, but sure enough they were pregnant! So you just never know.

If you are trying to get pregnant, my best advice is to stop trying. As silly as that may seem, it's the truth. I have heard so many stories of moms & dads that tried so hard to get pregnant only stressing themselves out even more. So, they end up adopting in the long run. Then while they were not expecting it, they became pregnant. It happens over and over again.

Just love each other and have fun together! Everything has a meaning behind it. Everything has it's own time. There's our time and then ther's God's time. They don't always match up! Most of the times they don't.

Many Blessings! Your in my prayers!

As a mother of 3 and a Birth Doula my opinion is that you are pregnant, You seem to have all of the signs and symptoms of pregnancy. Again, Please understand that this is my OPINION not a diagnosis. The first clue is the darkening areolas and sore breasts. If you don't want to wait a couple of days to take another home test (which are not always accurate) call your health care provider and ask for a blood test.

If you would like any additional information Please feel free to contact me. I would be happy to help if I can.

I too am trying! Just to let you know....I had ALL the signs twice now!! My nipples were even leaking milk! TWICE! There are some studies out there that when you want it so bad your body starts to think that you are pregnant! So, I love the advice to stop trying and it will happen on God's time! When it is right, it will happen! I know that sounds funny but it is true! Just a little back ground on me as well....I got pregnant with my first one on the pill...my second was planned but not really trying and then my third I got pregnant on the pill! NOW....we are trying like crazy for months and NOTHING! Go Figure! So....just relax! If it is meant to be it will be! Good Luck!

I know it will be hard, but try waiting a week to take another test - if you're pregnant, your body should definitely be producing enough of the hormone detected by the test by then. My period was very late with my first child too and I had 2 negative tests prior to getting a positive. (So then I took another test 2 days later just to be sure!) :)

Try not to think about it - you might be giving yourself some symptoms, just because you are wanting so much for them to be there.

Do continue to get enough rest, exercise, and good nutritional food. Skip alcohol!

On the positive side, I have a friend whose home pg tests always came back negative with both kids. Only blood tests came back positive.
On the other hand, it really isn't uncommon to be late sometimes, even if you're normally regular. All kinds of things can cause you to be late when you're actually not pregnant.
Here's hoping you're the former!!

If you don't like to wait I would just go to the doctor and have a blood test. I have heard of tests reading a false negative but if your are already a few days late and they are reading negative you probably are not :(
If you're not pregnant don't be discouraged, it can take normal healthly women 6mo to a year to get pregant. I would recommend the book Taking Control of Your Fertility. It tells you what ''signs'' your body gives you when you are ovulating and tons of great information about your body. It's a must read for all women!!

I can totally identify with your situation. I am also very regular. I was late and I took three tests that were negative before I went in for the blood test because I was totally freaked out about what was going on! The nurse came in all solemn and said "Your pregnancy test was positive." I'm like "Great! That we can deal with!" So it is possible. On a side note, she came a month late, which I think was horse hockey! She was perfectly ready to come when she came!

My old midwife used to say the only 100% sure sign of pregnancy is delivering a baby. : ) So it's hard to say for sure, but there's definitely a chance that you're pregnant. I've tested negative only to test positive a few days later, and I also spotted early in all my pregnancies, enough that I wasn't sure whether it was actually a period. So I'd say push for a blood test; it seems like you should definitely have a positive or a period within the next week or so. Good luck!

i suppose you could be. sometimes the hormones are kinda tricky, not showing up when they should.

i cant believe your doctor didnt want you to come in for a blood test. maybe you should request one. be patient and take another test at home in a week if you want. thats what i did and negative can turn positive when you least expect it. it truly sounds like you are pregnant with all the symptoms you have.

are you on a prenatal? this is a crucial time, so if you arent on one, get on one!! and hopefully congratulations are in order!

You could be, but wait another week before taking another test. I'm 5 mo's pregers now and with this baby, it took 6 pregnancy tests and 5 weeks late to finally register on a home test. Some women don't ever register on a home test...so wait a week and take another.

You may want to wait another few days - it may be too early to show up on the pregnancy test. The HCG levels might be too low yet even if you are late. Wait a few more days and try again. I was almost 10 days when I took the test but my sister was 10 days late and hers was negative. Sometimes your body changes and if you are under more stress than usual (trying to conceive adds stress) or have been sick lately, your cycle may change. I'd try in a few days and maybe you'll get a + result. If not, don't get discouraged - try again next month. It can take up to a year when trying regularily. Good Luck!

I thought for sure it was wrong, but then I did end up getting my period a week later than normal. This month I am waiting a full week to take a test no matter what to not get my hopes up too much...I'm hoping that is lucky for me. And best of luck TTC!

I strongly recommend charting your cycles, so that if you are not pregnant this time (or for next time you want to have a baby), you can know you are pregnant without even taking a test. You can know you are pregnant even when you are so early along that a pregnancy test would come out negative. It's very easy and great for anyone wanting to achieve (or avoid!) pregnancy!!!! I knew we were pregnant immediately. I used the book "Taking Charge of your Fertility" to learn this, the website is here: http://www.ovusoft.com/. Everyone trying to get pregnant should do this! You will know even more than your doctors about your body, your cycle, your pregnancy, etc... It's great! I could go on and on, but I won't - just check it out for yourself. A MUST for EVERY woman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (In my opinion) Hope that helps for the future!

My older sister got 5 false negatives or more with her first. Including one from the doctor's office. So yes, it is possible to get multiple false negatives. Also, I have to wonder if maybe it isn't the test. I took two EPT tests, and my friend also took one and they all only had the one line, but the line was verticle instead of horizontal and that meant a positve result, but since it was only one line we both though it was negative. EPT is the only test that was accurate for my sister though. I currently use first response and it has never been wrong, positive or negative. It is important to listen to your body, although tender nipples can be a sign of premenstral, not pregnant hormonal changes. It's when your breast tissue is tender that you can be more sure.

Stress can be a major part in being late in your cycle so if you are late, examine how much stress you've been under, both personally and professionally. Also, consider that worrying about the idea of being pregnant may contribute to this problem. Perhaps you could consider taking some prenatal vitams (you can get them cheap at any drugstore and most grocery or department stores in the vitamin isle) just in case, it will ease some tension, be good if you are pregnant, and aren't bad if you aren't. In fact they may help you conceive if you aren't currently pregnant.

Good luck and I hope you get some ideas from my advice.

Sounds like you've gotten plenty of advice from other moms, but I thought I'd tell you this. When my husband and I tried for our second child, I had two negative results one on the first day I was late, one on the 10th day I was late, and finally I got a positive on day fourteen!!! I was carrying twins and showing before I got a positive result! This is easier said than done, but just try to go through the next week without thinking about it and retest next week if you do not get your period. I also had an experience last Easter where I swore I had to be pregnant because of all the symptoms I was having. And after three pregnancies I should know right? But I got a negative result, thought it was wrong, went in for a blood test, and sure enough it was negative! A week later I was back to feeling normal again. Our bodies do very strange things when we are under stress. Do your best to relax and not think about it, sweetie! It will happen for you:-)

It's possible that you are and are just getting false negatives. Sometimes you have to wait a long time before it registers on the at home tests. I would go have a blood test at a clinic if you are still late in another week. I was 2 months pregnant before I knew--I do have PCOS though and my cycles are about as regular as decaf coffee! I have a frienf that I work with that is normally like you and she hasn't had hers in 3 months. I think it is due to stress. That can totally mess you up if you are under alot of it!
Anyway, I hope it works out for you, but I would take the blood test to rule it out for sure.

I know there is nipple changes when you get pregnant. It is one thing the doctor told me when I went in to see if I was pregnant with my first child. I don't know if your hormones are changing giving you the feelings you have or if you are getting false negitives. I do know when my overies shut down I was told I needed to have a blood pregnancy test each month before getting the hormone shot to help my overies. He told me that there won't be a false negitive or a false positive with the blood test. So maybe you could make an appointment and have her check you out and give you the blood test.

Each time she was pregnant, she had taken at least 4 pregnancy tests with each of her children before she finally went into the doctors office & they did a blood test - - sure enough she was pregnant. For some crazy reason, the home pregnancy tests never picked up the HCG levels as hers were quite a bit lower than normal, but still wound up having 2 adorable children.

Absolutely. False negatives on pregnancy tests are more common than you think. You know your body better than your doctor.

If you still haven't gotten your period by the time your clinic opens tomorrow you should definitely make an appointment for a blood test - much more accurate than peeing on a stick.

Make sure it's a blood test because otherwise it's just peeing on a stick again - you pee in the cup and they put the stick in!

Dear S.,
I have two answers to this question, yes and no. I would try not to worry about it(I know that this is hard to do given the situation)and wait one week and if you still have not gotten your period take the test again. I have had that happen where I had a negetive result only a week later to find that it was positive. Now if that comes back negetive you may not really be pregnant but just stressed out about wanting it so bad that your body thinks it is(hence some of the signs of pregnancy presenting)-you can sometimes actually trick your body into thinking that you are preganant and that is why you may have some of the symptoms of pregnancy and delayed period-this has happened to me too.(I have 5 children so I have had just about everything happen;yes, sadly even a miscarriage when I didn't know I was pregnant but experiencing pain and went to seek medical help only to find out I was pregnant and then to have my hopes dashed that I was actually miscarring)If you wield a negetive result the second week after no period then you may want to see someone to make sure that there isn't something else going on or maybe, just maybe you are pregnant and the results won't come until 1-2 weeks later.Good luck and I hope everything works out fine:)
P.S. a little advice for concieving if you are not pregnant this time try not to worry too much about "trying to get pregnant" instead try to just have fun and not try to get pregnant cuz that is usually when it happens-when you least expect it and weren't even trying for it-I have heard that happen to a lot of people who were trying for a long time to get pregnant and they ended up getting pregnant when they weren't even trying cuz stress itself can sometimes prevent it from happening. Good luck I hope this advice helps you.Keep us updated!

Yes, you could be pregnant. False negatives are WAY more common than false positives. My mother was always experiencing nausea, sore breasts... etc before her tests said she was pregnant. So definitely a possibility.

But.

Don't get too worked up either. I was always regular also and when my ex and I first started trying I psyched myself out at least twice. Meaning I got so concious of my cycle and hopeful and stressed that I made myself late by a week 2 times. Just plain being excited and hopeful can get a person so worked up they screw up their own system.

The good news is, I did get pregnant within 6 months. And my first test was negative also, even though I was late for my period.

So, yes, you may be pregnant. But don't get TOO worked up and excited just to be let down. GOOD LUCK!

Check out the book Taking Charge of your Fertility...it helps you understand the body that you think you understand...also helps you with taking your temp every day to help pinpoint ovulation and after 18 (or 12 cant remember) days of high temps you know that you are pregnant.

Stop wasting money on the preg sticks...they are so expensive and disappointing....once you take your temp every day and chart it, you will know when you are preg and then the stick will confirm it!! Also, if you were to have any fertility problems, the first thing the doctor will want you to do is start charting your temp...if you bring in 6 months worth at your first appt, they can take you to the next step which might be clomid...(i used clomid for both of my pregnancies, but it was the charting that also helped pinpoint the right day to conceive)

Good luck.

I would say yes, you are pregnant. A lot of people get negative results. May take 5 weeks from conception for the hormone to be detected in your urine. It is usually strongest if you take the test 1st thing in the morning. Good luck! Hope you are prego!

You can get false negative test and a lot of them also but never a false positive. You may just need to wait another week or so take another test or go to the Dr. and have her do a test if you dont want to wait. Good Luck to you!

Wanting to get pregnant and watching for your periods like a hawk and taking pregnancy tests can be very stressful. We had a daughter within the first two years of our marriage--then nothing for 18 more years. We had all the tests done and had all kinds of stuff done to try to get pregnant. Bottom line, when I relaxed, put it out of my mind, and put it in someone else's hands (God's) then it happened. I now have a college-aged daughter and an 18-month-old! What I am trying to tell you is RELAX. Get a test from the doctor if it will help ease your mind. Sometimes our bodies do weird things that are symptomatic of being pregnant. I think you might have to wait a bit longer for a home test to be accurate. Don't worry. Having a baby is a beautiful thing and it will happen. Have fun trying and don't make getting pregnant into a do-or-die thing like I did. I was a mess--I cried when I got my period, constantly was feeling stressed and wasn't having any fun in my life. I don't wish that on anyone. Good luck and please post when you get pregnant so we can celebrate for you!

Hi S.,
You have to try to relax and it will happen. However, make sure that you don't drink too much water before taking the tests as that can water down the result and you could get a false negative. You should take the test first thing in the morning. Also, you may just be late but are imagining some pregnancy symptoms because you want to be pregnant so badly. Try to keep busy with other things so that you don't just focus on getting pregnant. It will happen when the time is right. Nonetheless, if you still don't get your period take the test again in the morning and if it's still false and no period I would schedule a blood pregnancy test. Good luck!

I just read in article in Self magazine about this. They said that yes, it is possible. 1 percent of tests can be wrong. They also said certain medications can throw off the test. I would go see your doctor. If you want to read the article, it is in the April edition.

I didn't get a positive result from a home pregnancy test until the 3rd one I took. My sister who just found out a few days ago she was pregnant was the same way....maybe the 3rd time is the charm? I was probably 1 week late at that point, although I really hadn't been keeping track that well. Good luck, it sounds to be like you are pregnant. Your mother's intuition will usually tell you quicker than a test.

S., I know what you are going thru. I took 4 different pregnancy tests when I was 6 weeks pregnant with my first child. Only 1 of them came back positive, and the line was very faint (almost not even there). With my second pregnancy I was 4 weeks along and took 3 different tests, all of which came back negative. So, there is hope for you yet! Wait a couple weeks (I know hard that is!) and test again. Or do like I did and go to the doctor to find out for sure. Lots of luck on being pregnant!

With both my girls I got a faint but noticeable postive line with the First Response at 12 days past ovulation. On a 28 day cycle which doctors use you'd ovulate on cycle day 14 which will bring you past 12 days past ovulation. Perhaps, your stressing so much it's making you late or you just need to do a blood test. Wait a few more days and if it doesn't come take another test or schedule a blood test. Let us know.

Stress can cause you to be late too. If you 2 are trying toooo hard the stress can cause all of that. When I'm stressed I get sick too. Sometimes you can get a false negative but it's not real common. I would say to calm down and let nature take it's corse. It will happen when it is supposed to. "Trying" naturally causes stress which can also make it impossible to conceive. Good luck to you both and don't worry. Just have fun with it:-)

Hi! well, I just ahve to tell you I took 6 tests in the last month and all were negative...just found out Tuesday I am preggers! With my second child, we took at test July 24th and it was negative-then on Aug 3rd took another and it was positive. serioulsy, you could be and it might just be too early to tell. i would wait a week and test again. With this pregnancy, I took a test on Friday that was negative and by Tues it was positive. We had our "pregnancy confirmation" appointment yesterday and it was positive! I am due in January. I had the same symptoms you did-which is why I kept taking so many tests! Tender, tingling breast, fatique...all the pregnancy (and PMS) signs. This is my third child and I knew from the breats tenderness that i was for sure pregnant. Anyway, good luck and I hope it all works out for you!

Of course, nothing showed up for me until I was 2 1/2 months pregnant with my daughter, your symptoms sound right. Are you tired? Wait another week. If nothing happens by then, ask the doctor to do a blood test, those usually show up better than the pregnancy tests.

Good Luck

I work in a laboratory. You could be pregnant and have negative urine pregnancy tests this early. Wait until you are at least a week late and use your first morning urine (it is usually the most concentrated).

I am the same way with my period. I would have your doctor take a blood test so you know either way. At the age of 30 after 6 months of trying I went to a Fertility specialist. They can give you tests that will give you some asnswers and some choices if need be. Hang in there!
