Pregnant?

Just curious... has anyone ever taken a pregnancy test and it came back negative and then later on had a positive reading? I'm only a day late and took a test this morning. The results were negative. I was hoping to be pregnant. So I was wondering if any of you ever had a positive result if you retook the test later.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your responses. I will try and hold off taking another test for another week. Although, patience is not one of my virtues :)

Sorry if I am repeating anyone, but I just wanted to add that most pregnancy tests are designed for when you are 5 days or more late, so it is very possible that you are too early for an over the counter pregnancy test.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!!

A day late might be too early for the test to measure the hormone (most say you have to be at least 4 days late). Wait a few days to a week and try again. The tests measure the level of "pregnancy" hormone in your urine and it takes time for that to build up as your pregnancy progresses. It might just be too soon. Good luck! I hope you get the result you're looking for....just try to be patient as hard as that is!

Yes! It will come out negative if it's too early. I always waited about 25 days from the first day of my last period, but I have a 38 day cycle. Good luck, and congratulations (maybe).

Yes, this happened to me. Try again in a couple of days. The amount of hcg in your urine usually doubles every other day.

The first time i was pregnant, I took like 6 HPT and ones from my doctor - and they all came out negative. I even ended up going skydiving (eeeek!) and then found out the next Monday that I was pregnant. (That one didn't make it however.)

When I found out I was pregnant with my daughter, I had a blood test done. They are much more accurate early on.

If there's a question, just ask your doc for one of those! Then you will know much sooner. If it's positive, congratulations! If negative, maybe ask for other bloodwork to make sure your progesterone, etc. is all in order :)

YES! This just happened to me! I took a test and it was negative. Then a couple weeks later when I was sick I went to the doctor and found out I was 8 weeks pregnant! 8 WEEKS!!!
Take the test again in a week or two if you still haven't had your cycle. Sometimes if it's taken too early you can get a false negative. Also be sure to do it first thing in the morning. For some reason that's when you get the best results!

Blessings,
C.

I tested two days before my period was due and it was negative (should mention that I tested in the evening). Then two days later, I tested in the morning and it was positive. Good luck.

I have had this happen with three of my four chidlren. I know how frustrating it cam be to see the negative result, but not get your period. I would recommend waiting a few days, and then testing in the morning. Your hormones are more concentrated in the morning. If you still don't get a positive, I would recommend you go to your PCP and get a blood test. They are more sensitive. I wish you all the best on your road to pregnancy.

I had an upper respiratory infection and it was 28 days after my last period. My GP wouldn't give me antibiotics without knowing whether or not I was pregnant, so he tested my urine for pregnancy and it was negative. At 34 days past my last period, I did a home pregnancy test and it was positive. The next day I did another one and it was positive again. He is now 6 and a half years old. Many blessing in this new venture

My first test came back positive so I went and bought 2 more just to be sure and they came back negative. I think some of them just are not as good as others. The positive one was right. I have a wonderful daughter.

That happened with my first pregnancy. I took the test when I was 5 days late, thinking that was enough. It was negative. Then 49 days later I KNEW I was pregnant and took one again, and it was positive. I was told false negatives happen quite often (much more often than false positives do)!

Good luck!

I had three negative before my positive and the positive was very light. Apparently my cycle was off that month so I hadn't really missed my period yet when I started taking the test (normally start on a Thursday but I had a hunch so I took a test on Wednesday-negative, Thursday, negative, and Friday, negative.) I took another one on Saturday morning it was barely visible but it was positive! I'd give it a day or so and try it again!

S.,

You have received wonderful, encouraging responses: evidently it is not uncommon to obtain a false negative response. My only additional thought is that, in your enthusiasm, perhaps you are a bit over-eager (you might read over-anxious) in testing when you are one day late. If anything, I think that the self-imposed "stress" of knowing instantly might might work against conception. If you are pregnant, you are; if not, you and your husband will still enjoy the process of your becoming pregnant. So just RELAX, forget about testing "immediately" and let nature take its' course. In the Bible, patience* is not only a gift of the Spirit, but is cited as a factor in God fulfilling His promise to bless Abraham and Sarah with a much-desired child:

Hebrews 6:13-15 - "For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, saying, "I WILL SURELY BLESS YOU AND I WILL SURELY MULTIPLY YOU." And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise."

S., be encouraged. You'll know VERY early on when you become pregnant, because you are trying, have (apparently) successfully given birth to 3 girls and are eagerly anticipating another desired pregnancy. So what if it is 10 days, or even 20... before you "confirm" the realization of your desires?

Wishing you success in your aim and joy in the process,
K.

The same thing happened to me except that the test was from my doctors office. Done before any antibiotics were prescribed. About a week later after feeling completely exhausted I took another test and low and behold it was positve. And now I have a precious 5 month old baby boy. So I would wait a few more days- eaiser said than done I know and repeat the test.
Best wishes,

absolutely! I've never got a positive home pregnancy test! sometimes you just have lower levels of the pregnancy hormone! the level of hormones will basically double every day until I think the 13th wk? somewhere around there. so the longer you wait, the higher the level will be and the more likely the test will pick up the hormone =) good luck!

Yes, it's possible!
My first two children came after "negative" tests.
I ended up using two tests for each of those two pregs.
First tests was a day or two after I was supposed to start....came back neg.
Second tests were done a week later - positive.
My babies and I simply don't produce whatever that hormone is that those tests detect very quickly.

HTH and best wishes!

Yes, that is possible. Usually though, it would show positive by the time you are a day late. Try in a couple days if your period hasn't come.

You'll love what happened to my test. The first was said Positive...then when I took a second one to show my husband(I had taken it early in the morning)...it said negative!...and the next three said negative.
Finally, at the dr.s office the test was positive.
Good luck

Your hcg level will double each day. This is what the pregancy tests detect. When I was expecting for the first time, my test was so faint that I almost thought it was negative. I took four more tests just to prove it to myself that I was really pregnant. LOL.

It just depends on the amount of the pregnancy hormone present in your urine. You could still be pregnant. Try again in a couple of days and good luck!!!

Oooh, S.. I hope you're pregnant too. There are actually a lot of false negatives but it is almost impossible to have a false positive. In other words, yes you could have taken the test too soon to show up or had a flawed test that just didn't work or, if it were positive, even "slightly" you are pregnant. I would wait a week and retake the test.
Good Luck! I wish you the very best.
