Hi everyone. I have two great kids a girl 5 and a boy almost 3 so you would think I would know if I was pregnant or not. I've taken two pg tests and both were negative. However, we have not been using any protection and I thought I was starting my period but it seems like it has stopped after just one day. And that first day was more like spotting, not red, just the dark stuff. (sorry for the details) I have NEVER had a period like that ever. And I totally feel pregnant. So any thoughts as to why these two tests are coming back negative? Oh one more thing...I'm either a week late or right on in my cycle. I forgot to write it down last month. :-) Should I go to the doc? wait a week and test again? or just go with it and be thankful for a short almost non existant period?? Thanks for any and all thoughts and suggestions.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I want to thank everyone for all the wonderful responses. I waited a few more days and took another test and it came back positive. I think I checked the test 14 times that day and even took it out of the garbage the next day to check again. We are very excited about this wonderful surprise. Well everyone except my almost 3 yr old son. He does not want to be a big brother. I'm hopeful that will change with time. I haven't gone to the doc yet, but called and will see him next Thursday for an ultrasound. I have a twin brother so I am a little nervous about twins. I will update after my appt. Thanks again everyone!!

Any word yet? I, too, had a very brief period and then it stopped (within a day) and negative tests. I am now 8 months pregnant. I don't think its really uncommon as another friend had a similar thing happen as well. Good luck and congrats!!

Hi, A.!
Most directions for a pregnancy test will tell you to wait a week and test again. If you still have not had a period or a positive result that week, see a doctor.
So if I were you, I would test again in one week and then see a doctor.

I would wait another week and test again, especially since you're not sure if you're late yet or not. With every single one of my pregnancies (three, resulting in two children) I had implantation spotting which ranged from 3-6 days long with cramps like a period, but very light (flow-wise) and dark in color. Many women spot during implantation to varying degrees and maybe that's what happened to you this time.

With my first daughter (second pg), I didn't get a positive test until I was 7 weeks along. I assumed I'd just had a light period after the first few negatives, but then I had some crazy food cravings and tiredness so I took another, at my husband's insistence, which was positive.

With my first and third pregnancies I got a positive at 4-5 weeks along so I have no idea why the tests kept coming up negative with my older daughter. Different levels of the hormone I guess.

Best wishes either way!

Over the last few years, I have had several periods like that. No red, only a little pink then the darker stuff. They are usally a little shorter and a lot lighter cycles. I'm thinking it is the body's way of slowing down. I still have cycles that are as bright as ever and as full as ever, so no real pattern to pass on.

Who knows though, the tests may not be sensitive enough, your hormones may be a little low etc. I would act as if I was, wait another week, and retest. If you get another cycle like this next month, I would test one more time at home before going to the doctor.

You know your body best. If you can wait a week, do that and if it's STILL negative and you're STILL feeling pregnant go in to the doc. Then at least you'll know for sure. Sometimes those tests aren't accurate if it's too early.

Good luck!

Greetings!

Since you didn't write down your last menstrual period, you could just be testing too early. definitely no need to go to the doctor, just re-test in a couple of days.

Ciao,

When in doubt, at the very least call your Advice Nurse. They'll direct you from there.

A.,

My opinion is that you should wait a bit to take a test. What you experienced could be implantation bleeding, if that is the case you would not contract enough of the HCG hormone yet to take a positive test. That hormone doubles and tripples each day though so what was not positive yesterday could be today. Wait a bit retake it and then go from there. Also, since you have had two children your hormones might have changed over the course of these last three years. If you are not pregnant I would consider having your hormone levels checked to see if that could be the problem. My body doesn't produce progesterone, I see a natural path and he has me on a natural form of the hormone... It regulated my cycles, and helped me not to miss-carry my son when I was pregnant with him. It is worth looking into in my opinion.

Hope this helps.

I've had that too. Usually it's from stress.

I would wait 1-2 weeks and test again.

It wouldn't surprise me if you started your period after sending this message. sometimes getting things off your chest helps.

Good luck and best wishes.

Wait and test again in a week. Depending on the sensitivity of the test you used, it may be too early to detect the hcg. Hcg is produced in the body when implantation occurs, and spotting like that in very early pregnancy is usually from implantation. So, it is likely that you aren't pregnant, but like I said, less sensitive tests wouldn't pick up that very early hcg.
Hope that helps!

I would wait a week and test again or even just a few days. When I found out I was pregnant (and its with my first one) I already knew, but the first test was negative. I took one 2 days later and it was positive! At home tests are finicky, the nurse told me that they can give you a false reading because its too soon but they will NEVER give a false positive reading! So dont waste your money on taking 5 tests (as my husband made me)after you get a positive, your good to go!

You might be... however, it shouldn't change what you doing if you were trying to get pregnant. No alcohol, no smoking, making sure that the prescription drugs you might be taking are not harmful to pregnant mothers and their babies, taking pre-natals in advance, getting right.

You don't say how late you are. But, you could go to your doctor and get checked out. If you are pregnant, you would be going for your first check up any way. If you're not, your doctor could explain the odd spotting, maybe something else is going on.

Take good care of yourself.

Hi A.,
You know your body better than anyone else - so, you probably are pregnant. I only have one baby, but with him, I was SURE I was pregnant. Tired, queasy, all the typical symptoms... but for the first 4 months of my pregnancy ALL the tests were negative!!! So, I would suggest making all the changes in your lifestyle you'd make if you knew for sure you were pregnant -if there are any. And either wait until a test shows up positive or call your OB/Midwife to see what they want you to do.
And GOOD LUCK!
M.

Hey A.,

After my second child I got pregnant and my period was just like that, and indeed I was pregnant. I had a negative test as well. I think it was cause I had that small period. I went to the Dr. for a blood test cause I couldn't wait. I had to know, I mean I knew but those darn pregnancy test said I wasn't. The Dr. told me that the test came up negative do to the low hormone level since it was so early in pregnancy..
If you have anymore questions please fell free to ask.

Hi A.,

I agree with Melissa...take the E.P.T. test. It is the one that detects the smallest amount of hCG in the urine. Most tests detect about 100 mIUs hCG, but the E.P.T. detects 40 mIUs hCG...which means that you can test as early as 3 days before your period, assuming you have a 28-day cycle. I know you said you are a little unsure of the date of your last period, so this complicates things just a bit, however, if you are pregnant, rest assured that you will find out about it at some point!!! I know it's hard, but I would wait a few days, and take another test. And I know most tests say that you don't need first of the morning urine, but it's good to use it anyway. I hope this helps you, and please keep us updated.

If you feel pregnant most likely you are. I felt pregnant with both my kids, took the EPT test, and was. I've seen a lot of posts here about people getting false negatives often. Call your doctor/OBGYN and make an appointment. That's always a good idea if you're not sure.

Let us know?

Hi A.,
You can certainly do the "wait and see". You will know soon enough whether you are pregnant again, I'm sure. If you want to know sooner you can always go to your doctor and get what's called a serum Hcg. This is a blood test--the same hormone that gets tested in "pee on a stick" tests, but it is much much more sensitive.

I would try to take the pregnancy test first thing in the morning before you eat or drink anything. That's when your hormone's are supposed to be the strongest. When I was pregnant with my 2nd child I took a test in the afternoon and it was negative, and first thing the next morning I took another one and it was positive. Best of luck.

Tests can give a false negative so it is possible, could be too early for the test to take. I would go to the dr if you have good ins. if not wait a week.

Since you had some sort of blood the first day, I would assume it is a period. I have had many periods like that and the OB told me that some women only need 6 periods a year to be healthy, so perhaps your body is changing a little after your 2nd child. However, that being said, if over the next couple of weeks you continue to feel like you are pregnant, I would take another test. The hormone that the pregnancy test checks has to build up in your system a bit before it really shows a positive. There are also those tests that call themselves "early response" tests to detect even a hint of the hormone. You might want to get one of those perhaps.
